    • Santa Claus cannot be non gender specific therefore the question simply does not arise

I don't understand the question.  Santa's a dude with a beard.

When I once got roped into being santa at a church fair (granny, you're barely forgiven for that) a fake beard was part of the costume (didn't need the stomach padding though :P

All the little kidlets expect santa to have a beard, maybe they didn't expect santa to be child-averse, but that's a different subject

Yeah, I think he's been established as a man. Santa sans beard would be weird.

If we want a non-gender specific Christmas-being I'd suggest an angel! Or bells. Or just teach kids that it's their family members from the beginning. Oh, oh, or presents are the fruits of christmas trees!

I can’t see that mattering. Santa has many looks (and names) throughout the world. It’s the concept that brings joy, not the appearance.

'Santa Claus' is not a legit tradition in my country. As Santa is just a marketting tool you can impersonate this character freely.

We have the catholic 'Saint Nicholas' coming instead on the 6th of December. Although there are controversies about the colour of the skin of his assistant, I don't think that we should throw away tradition, just present it respectfully.

If extremists are going to start messing with Santa's gender of all things, at least make him/her/whatever post-menopausal; that way there's no need to omit the beard.

At least my vote matches the opinion of the majority, at the time of this writing at least.

Beards are not unique to any gender, so I think that a gender unspecified Santa can have a beard. But I think it's also easy to recognize when someone is dressing as Santa even if they don't include the beard piece, so I don't think it matters.

Why is there a non-gendered Santa now??  Beard or no beard the suit should give it away, I mean kids believe the guy at the mall is Santa sooo...no beard might cause a issue with that.

"Female" Santas pretty much exist solely to be sexually fetishized (for some reason)

Just throwing that out there

Santa is a man, so has a beard. But if Santa were non-gendered, I believe they should not have a beard. I view facial hair has quite gendered as it is now, and thus "non-gendered Santa" should not have a beard.

Someone write a children's book about a transgender or nonbinary elf instead. Or a trans or enby child who gets to meet Santa or something.

those are really good ideas

Eh, Santa can shave if he wants. Beards strike me as impractical. Also, no one has actually seen him/them yet, right? =D *Hear the sound of a childhood about to die horribly.*

However, Gandalf ISN'T ALLOWED.

"Santa Claus" does not exist, the figure has been invented for commercial purposes, so he should not have a beard, a head, feet or anything else.

Not entirely true https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas Though I agree he's been over commercialised and 'transformed' into something Coca Cola wanted to exploit (and now everyone selling something).

There are other traditions as well that feature a santa claus kind of figure.

Since the original was male (and not non-gender-specific) then a beard is fitting. It astonishes me that some people are keen to turn every tradition into a genderless/feminist fest tbh.

For those interested in more, in the Netherlands and some other countries there is a feast on the 6th of December where Saint Nicholas makes his entry from Spain by boat and then on a horse, giving children oranges, sweets and presents, not unlike the Americanised Santa. There's an entirely different discussion going on around him as he has a black servant or servants with him, which are generally blacked up white people. The two backgrounds to this are that he freed black child slaves when he was alive and took one as his servant. The other is the familiar passage through chimneys making his servant black from the soot. Make of it what you will!

Oops! Just realised Saphoune said something simlar.

In a street around here they had one of those santas on a rope a couple of years ago, you know, climbing the house to get to the chimney. Anyway, 'santa on a rope' had gotten a bit wet because of the rain and went a bit limp. After a couple of days it looked like a santa who had hung himself. I wish I had a photo. It must have traumatised quite a few children passing.

I would like to add something I haven't thought about: Schmutzli! They are a Swiss tradition and they are definitely not racist, but even there.

Additional poll question:-

Should a child-averse Santa have the choice to wear a false beard he can then use to falsely project a non child averse persona given the deleterious consequences this false dissembling is likely to have on the children's later development?

Well done on reading that rather long question if you've got this far. 🙂

And now that you have you might as well answer it... 🧐
