As anyone who's met me irl knows - as does anyone who's looked at the sort of threads I habitually post on - I regularly attend and arrange meets in various locations in the UK - and occasionally elsewhere. The following thread appeared recently in the UK meetup forum:-

As you can see if you click on it, I have posted on this thread myself, but that doesn't mean I'll be going to Hull anytime soon, even though I can get a direct train there in an hour from where I am now. And that is because, as you will also have noted if you have perused the thread, that this thread has not been posted with a view to arranging a meetup irl, despite the appeal to 'contact' other aces in a particular locale. It hints, in a somewhat diffident and indirect manner, at the desirability of meeting other aces in cyberspace - and presumably getting to know each other there - before plucking up the courage to go to an actual meetup and talking to people face to face.

Those of us who met Kimmie at the International meet in Utrecht this summer (myself included) were, I think it's fair to say, very impressed at how Kimmie managed to overcome some very pronounced social anxiety issues by attending what was not only her first meetup but, if I am not mistaken, her first trip abroad! 🙂 I think it's fair to say that we were also quite touched at how much it obviously meant to her to be able to meet people face to face in a supportive and non-judgemental environment, and end up making a few friends in the process. 😎 The Stockholm meet she is organising in March will therefore be much less anxiety inducing (I would hope) and I, for one, will be looking forward to meeting her again, as I shall be attending it myself.

Perhaps part of the reason Kimmie was able to pluck up the courage to attend the Utrecht meet in person is that a thread about it was started a whole year prior to the event. This then morphed into a sort of ongoing cyber meetup which allowed people to get to know each other online if they hadn't met before - particularly useful I would think, to those of us who have social anxiety issues.

Given the amount of interest expressed at attending meetups, and the number of people who have made friends with others and found attending and arranging meetups a very positive and enjoyable experience - and for some, perhaps, even empowering or life enhancing - is it not a shame that there seems to be a fairly sizeable constituency of people who don't feel able to attend meetups, even to the extent of making it to the location but then feeling they have to back out and run off home as it's too much for them to cope with?

If your answer to the above question is 'yes' how would you answer the following question? Is it not time to have a dedicated cybermeetup forum (or perhaps one attached to each existing forum?) in which the advertised purpose of the forum would be to meet in cyberspace, get to 'cyberknow' each other by 'cybersocialising' ( now I'm just inventing terminology as I go along ! 😮 😄) with a view to then meeting up irl if desired? Because the only time a meetup forum thread is going to be posted a whole year in advance is an international thread for an international meet, and if you don't, for whatever reason - possibly logistical or financial - think that you will be able to attend that particular meet, then perhaps you will never get to the point at which you'll be able to pluck up the courage to actually go to one?

Thoughts, anyone?

I see what you're saying, although, I thought members were already getting to know each other before meetups by interacting on AVEN's different forums, the chat room, and in the meetup threads (and through members' profiles, where some mention their hobbies, occupation, etc.)

I thought so too, but are they? Do you know they are or are you just guessing?

Perhaps there is a need a forum that is more explicitly one step closer to an irl meet?

I don't think there is anything prohibiting people from creating such threads. That's basically what Kimmie is doing the the Scandinavia thread, yes?

But maybe it could be useful to have a cyber-meetup subforum in the meetup forum?

Something along those lines, yes. 🙂

Yes! As she and others did for the Utrecht meet. Both of which were/will be international.

But how often does this happen for a meet that is not specifically international but aimed more at people from a particular region local to oneself? Like Hull, for example, which I think it's fair to say will most probably never feature as a location for an international meet but in or near which it might be possible to meet other aces if you yourself live nearby?  This is one of the main points I was trying to emphasize in the op.

And my point was anyone could create a thread. There's nothing that says it has to be for an international meetup. :) That said, I'm not opposed to your proposal nor arguing against it, but it's really for the mod of the meetup forum to consider. As suggested by the purple cat above. :D

Cyber meetups... what’s the difference in just creating a thread in the meet-ups just for that?  To say seeing each other like in video or voice, such a thread could encourage forming a Skype/Discord group just for that local cyber meet-up.

I’m part of a local only furry meet-ups or ‘fur meets’ for short that’s outside of conventions on Facebook groups, that’s a similar thing for either Furries to meet in cyberspace or in person.  Venues are arranged by the admins of these Facebook and venue owners there.

Not that I’ve been to a meet-up in years now, but I certainly wouldn’t originally have went to one without ‘knowing’ someone from the forum beforehand. I used to play the CAH clone online (Zyzzy?) with a few folk from here and then it went from there.

Shit story but yes, I agree there should be a sub-forum regarding online meet-ups or groups or whatever. It would help a lot, especially for those new to AVEN as a whole - not just the meet-up side of it.

Kimmie.

I am mentioned in the first post so here is what i have to say,

The reason to why i decided to give it a go was because i have learned to know basically everyone in other threads before so when the meetup came up i decided to give it a try. And the rest is history i got new friends even some that i did not know before the meet up.

I would say the difference is that it's one step closer to committing to a meetup irl and that this option should be available (and could be helpful) to those that might wish to use it.

If it helps, @nameinagame de tepellicker, mod of the Meetup Forum, made a thread, asking for suggestions or changes/subforum ideas.

Okay, thankyou for drawing my attention to that. 🙂

As you can see from below I have now posted a link to this thread on the thread below.

I'm here :P Sorry, been a little busy these past two days, but have been keeping an eye on this thread. Thanks to all the people who notified me about this :)

So I definitely understand where this is coming from, @Moderne Jazzhanden, but I just want to raise a few things:

There are virtual meetup threads already posted in the top-level Meetup forum. Here are some examples:

Twitter

Students for students to connect with each other.
Tumblr
Skype
Pen Pals
Discord (Not in Meetup, but still on AVEN. There are actually several Discord threads and servers... I don't think this is the main one, but it was the first I found. Once I learn of the main one, it should get posted and pinned in Meetup Mart.)

And there is also the Map so you can see who is close to you and connect with them. To some extent AVEN's chat and private messaging (especially here) offer online connections too.

What you are suggesting is essentially a more localised version of the above. I can certainly see how it could be useful, but I sort of feel using the other threads linked here to try to find nearby people would be a better.

Alternatively, if someone does post a thread for an online connecting in a local area, like the Hull one, nearby people can see them and message them. I don't think it needs to be in a different subforum..? But correct me if you think I'm wrong here.

Yes, exactly.

But now that you put it like that, maybe you could summarise the information I've quoted from yours above on a clearly labelled sticky somewhere for people to see? Because that thread I quoted in the UK meetup mart trying to reach out to Hull/East Yorkshire aces is clearly pointless and redundant if the poster is already aware of what I've just quoted you on above. And obviously we don't really want the meetup mart cluttered up with threads like that if they serve no useful purpose related to that forum, i.e. that there is no intention of actually organising a meetup.

But is the person who started it actually aware of all that stuff you've mentioned?? It would be interesting to know...

Good point! There should be a master thread in each subforum linking to each of the "online meets" threads. In the Meetup Mart changes thread there is also discussion around having links to other websites hosting ace meets for a region too. Both of these could go in one master thread.

This idea, and the variants of it, are now being voted on here:

Give me a shout if you feel I haven't represented the ideas well or provided enough options to vote on.

No, I think it's fair enough what people are being asked to vote on. 🙂

I await the results with great interest! 🙂
