Our president is a deeply stupid man

While I agree with the sentiment, the article is obviously biased. See "Republican presidents are dangerous to national and world security."

Is he stupid? It seems that he is getting what he wants (media attention,  tax reduction) and his cronies are getting what they want (massive corporate tax reduction).

If you stop assuming that his goals have anything to do with benefiting the country, or anyone other than himself, its not clear that he isn't being very effective.

Trump is living proof that totally incompetent people can indeed come into positions of power with a generous helping of dumb luck.

i don’t believe that our president is stupid. just because his goals may not be the same as a lot of people doesn’t mean he isn’t getting his way. i think most people would have to agree that he is very successful.

despite that, i think calling any president of ours ‘stupid’ is highly inappropriate, whether in agreement with them or not. i choose to respect all presidents even if i don’t agree with them or even appreciate them. just my two cents

Do you think human beings in positions of power are incapable of the same failings as any other human being?

Because it sounds like you think calling any other person "stupid" is (potentially) okay, so long as they aren't a president -- otherwise you would have just said that it isn't cool to call anyone stupid.

Maybe he is rude, arrogant, ignorant, narcissistic, verbose, unintelligible, immoral, amoral, self serving, cruel, and pretty much the real estate reality tv host equivalent of a snake oil peddling carnival barker, but he's probably not stupid, per se.

Is it bad that everyone reading the headline knew this was a Donald Trump thread?

He's spent millions on branding his last name, yet gets remembered for his lacking competency for free.

Considering

1) the topic title mentions a president, in the present tense ("is a deeply stupid man")

2) most people think "of the US" when they hear "president", especially among English speakers, which is what most of this site is comprised of

3) Trump is indeed the current US president

I don't think it was really that big of a logical stretch to make?

No it wasn't. But like many think "Kleenex" when wanting tissue paper (the power of branding), I just found it comical his name is equally associated with "stupid presidents". Or plain "stupid".

You can only think Trump when you see "dotard". Google it. That's what I mean.

Not even George W Bush had that distinction.

Or how parents refer to any of their kid's video games as a "Nintendo", yep

I don't care if he's successful and getting his way, he's still a moron. When people have to repeatedly remind you not to say things that are dangerous, or simplify complex reports to get you to keep reading, or translate what you say because even though English is your first language your words are so jumbled and confused it's hard to follow, then maybe you're stupid. He can be a successful dumbass, being successful and getting your way doesn't automatically qualify you as having the title of "genius".

Ugh, listening to Trump speak makes me want to bash my head against the wall. Not because of his policies, but because of how stupid he sounds whenever he opens his mouth and isn't reading from anything (though his frequent problems with reading his speeches and telepromptors show he doesn't really practice his speeches much).

i think that there is a level of respect that citizens should be capable of handling towards our current president, whoever it may be. that being said, i absolutely do not think it's cool or okay in the slightest to call someone stupid, no matter who they are. i simply only mentioned the president since that was the actual topic of discussion, it was the relevant information. so no, i wouldn't have just said that "it isn't cool to call anyone stupid" simply because that wasn't the point i was trying to make. i was basically trying to point out how it seems so many americans aren't capable of even the lowest degree of respect to people they don't agree with, it seems childish that many have simply turned to demeaning insults. people did that when Obama was president, and now people do that while Trump is president, it has almost undoubtedly happened to every president. it just seems inappropriate and childish either way.

Trump is a bullshitter, and not a very artful one at that, but he's not stupid.

I disagree. He is very stupid. He is just also very skilled at bullshitting, so he gets away with weaving his own reality most of the time. His entire life and career are based on his creations, and it is foolish to underestimate him. He may have bitten off more than he can chew, though, in the long term. I don't think history will be as fooled by him as the general population has his entire life.

Of course he's stupid; we've had 2.5 years proof of that.  Stupdity has nothing to do with whether you're getting your way or not.  And he's NOT getting his way; he has not been successful in anything he announced that he would do when he took office.  And...he now has an impeachment investigation progressing;  it doesn't  matter whether he'll actually be tried or not by the Senate, it's certainly not an advantage to be impeached by the House.

Unfortunately ToS means that we can't refer to him by a comic misspelling of King Canute's alternative spelling :P

He understands power. He knows how to manipulate. This takes a level of social intelligence.

Mind you, you could just be highly narcissistic and this just happens to be your nature.

I don't think he is an idiot, either.

You don't get ahead in a city like New York being a moron. Many feeling he's a moron are more irritated by his lack of introspection and listening skills.

However, immature, bullheaded, narcissistic, pathological liar and egotistical all easily would apply.

Yup, he's the shining example of "anyone can become president". No qualifications needed, work ethic not required, literacy is optional.

I don't think he's very skilled at bullshitting. There are enough people who see right through his bullshit.

Being capable of introspection is a part of intelligence, as is understanding that taking in information from others is necessary for proper planning and acquiring knowledge about the world outside yourself.  The fact that he has been through bankruptcies so many times, have had casinos fail, built unsuccessful golf clubs, had a "foundation" and a "sales university" determined to be illegal and closed, and ran out of banks that would loan him money except for one that has legal troubles of their own -- these are not examples of getting ahead, in New York or anywhere else.  He was given millions by his father; he's wasted them.

Trump is a moron, and a pussy ass bitch.  I don't equate getting what you want with being intelligent--by that logic, infants would be the smartest people on the planet.

There's no reason to employ a facade of being stupid, unless you can't help it because you are.

Exactly.  His ego is too large to ever appear stupider than he actually is.  He's not pretending.

I'd disagree with the last paragraph. If enough people saw through the BS he wouldn't have been elected

I think plenty that voted for him don't care about the bullshit.  They'll take it along with the reassurance Trump brings them that being in power is their birthright.  Nativists* get freaked the hell out when they think that whites (could get/are getting) displaced, and Trump tapped into that deep fear.

(*An odd term, since it often doesn't take into account the native peoples of the lands in question.)

My point is that most people (when he got elected at least, maybe still) don't see the stupid. They only see what they want to see without looking more. Poor analogy on my part.

True. And that's one thing con-artists count on (that and people thinking they are the ones getting a better deal).
