Superstitions Anyone?

DuskFire

Recommended Posts

So today is Friday the 13th where I am in the Eastern USA. Apparently there is also a full moon tonight in other areas.

Anyone nervous or scared?

Does anyone have superstitious beliefs? Share your strange habits, beliefs, and traditions that may or may not be superstitious. OCD rituals are welcome as well! (Having OCD myself I know it's good to discuss why people do rituals)

(I figure since it's getting around October soon it's a good time for these important questions)

I love Friday the 13th! Good things always happen, like crushes talking to me, or good weather, or school letting out early, or having funny conversations with friends. Dunno what makes these days so awesome.

That said, I always lace up my left skate first and never ice skate with wet hair.

All of the people I've known who were involved in theater were adamant about not saying "Macbeth" anywhere near the stage, because it brings bad luck to a performance.

I don't look in mirrors in dark rooms - a left over from the first time a mean girl told us a story about Bloody Mary*. I had nightmares about that for years and refuse to have mirrors in my room at all.

It's never worked, but I still tap a soda can on the top 3 times before opening it - that's supposed to stop if from fizzing over.

*Did you know this story came to be known during the early years of GenX? I have friends who are part of the Boomer Generation who'd never heard the story before I asked if they'd ever heard of it. The current generation has Slender Man ...

What a coincidence, it was the same in Europe today. I'm not superstitious though.

What do they do if they actually play Macbeth?

I'm not superstitious at all, but I like the number three so much that I will always, always choose it. It's nonsense, but it just feels lucky, so I do it to get the good feeling it gives me.

The same thing with crossing myself. I cross myself like a Catholic probably three times a day at least, even though I'm an atheist. It just feels good. I do it whenever I see something bad that deserves respect, especially if it's the kind of thing that's ignored. The last time I remember doing it was driving yesterday when I saw a squirrel hit dead in the road. If an ambulance passes me, I'll do it.

I think this is due to the culture I was raised in, conditioning. Even though I don't believe in God, or any of the meaning behind it, it feels like I'm expressing respect. I have this feeling for most of Christian imagery, in fact. Even though I shouldn't, given what the Catholic Church has done to people.

The association of Christianity with goodness, love and respect that has been driven into me since I was born persists emotionally, despite intellectual rejection. I'm such a positivity whore that I don't care how absurd this is, I just indulge in it. I even had a guy a work recently ask me how I explained myself to guests when they take me for a devout person, as I am often also draped in crosses and have Christian tattoos, which I got after becoming an atheist, I've been an atheist since I was 15. I told him I would tell them the truth if this ever happens.

@RoseGoesToYale but do you know why you do it? Is is just a habit of no meaning/muscle memory or something more?

I personally like the number 13 because of it being associated with stuff people don't like. Nobody ever chooses it so I always do when possible. Plus 2013 was a really great year in my life so I associate it with goodness not babes. (Lol "badness" was autocorrected to babes LMAO 😂 I'm just gonna leave it because it's funny)

2015 though was what I consider the worst year in my life so far so I don't like the number 15. I don't actually believe anything mystical about these things but I still like and hate them possibly because of memories and how I remember things.

Last time I skated with wet hair, my grandpa passed out on the ice, someone ran over his head with a skate blade, and he had to go to the ER. He passed out due to a side effect of medication, but I take no chances.

The left skate thing is just habit, I think.

13 is a lucky number of mine, mostly cause that's my birthday, but also like @DuskFire mentioned, most other people hate the number, so maybe i'm just a contrarian in that sense. otherwise as superstitions or specific practices go, i don't have many, or they are more like habits. i like symmetry and even numbers, so for example, if i have a drink, i have to take an even number of sips at a time. if i'm doing some sort of movement, i have to count and keep track of the numbers. and like a lot of people, i don't step on sidewalk cracks, otherwise, if one foot stepped on a crack, the other one would have to as well. (i don't have ocd) it's just a bunch of annoying habits and practices i cannot seem to break. oh also, i lace up my left skate first, like @RoseGoesToYale mentioned they do as well which is just a fun coincidence

I don't give a crap about full moons or black cats and ladders or certain calendar dates. Sports, OTOH... :D

A funny thing happened at the Mets game last night. First base rookie Pete Alonso has been tearing up the place nearly all season. Then he grew a mustache. Made him look like an 80s porn star, but whatever. He ended up not hitting anything for a couple of days, got fed up and shaved the mustache off between innings

I didn't think you did from the description you gave of your habits. TBH I get so tired of people thinking OCD means you're a clean freak and like doing things an even amount of time. I have severe OCD (thankfully it's not been serious enough to go to the hospital lately. but I have before!) and people think all those things about me when they have absolutely nothing to do with OCD at all I'm quite an unorganized person as well. Obsessions come in MANY different forms. I really wonder where the idea that cleanfreaks or people that repeat stuff are associated with OCD came from?

But enough of my rant back to 13… mwahaha!

I'm pretty sure baseball players are known to be highly superstitious

this. i completely agree, perception of ocd as well as other conditions are so skewed for some odd reason. i have some friends with ocd who definitely aren't very organized. i have no idea where the stereotypes come from at all lol... but yes, 13, it's a pretty epic number ngl

Well, I suppose it can be considered superstitious but for those who believe in magic, it is said that you should never keep mirrors in your room because those can act as gateways for spirits.

Oddly enough 2013 was a terrible year for me... but I never even made the "number 13" connection.

@fuzzipueo I've actually gained the courage to do the Bloody Mary before and lo and behold I saw a figure staring back at me... It... Was.....

Cacti must be kept outside of the house because it causes bad energy.

Pet snakes, or images of snakes, should not be kept in the house because it's bad luck.

Unless designed for it (roller bags) backpacks, bags, and purses should not be put on the floor. It's a symbol of bad fortune.

Black cats are cool. I just like how they look.

Anyway, back to the question at hand, nope, I'm not superstitious.

All the bad luck in the world wouldn't stop me from getting a snek bebby to snuggle.

But don't you dare wear hats inside or put shoes on anything but the floor. As much etiquette as superstition probably.

That said, as a D&D player I am superstitious about dice rolls - things like lucky dice, lucky ways of shaking them and saying that my character says a prayer to their patron.

The worst thing that happened to me yesterday was I woke up with a headache, and all I had to do was take a couple of ibuprofen to take care of that. Of course I waited til today to say that because I thought I’d jinx myself if I said, “Nothing really bad has happened to me today”, so I guess that’s kind of a superstition haha.

Two of the sweetest cats I’ve ever known have been black cats, so I definitely don’t think they’re bad luck.

I love black cats, and the number 13 is my lucky number.

I guess I was when I played sports, but that's more my OCD, regarding my extensive pre-game routines to condition my mind for competition.

Oof, there was the harvest moon on Friday The 13th in my area too.

Five seconds after hearing about it, I completely forgot until tonight (on the 16th of september) when I went outside and saw the moon was orange, took a few selfies and went back inside.

My attention span is very short, and I even forget to do things I'm excited to do because my mind is constantly wandering off

I've never heard of any of these before.

I always have to say, or actually touch, wood when I say something has gone well cos I don't wanna tempt fate. Apparently you can touch your head if there's no wood around, so that works too.

I knew people.used the expression/gesture "knock on wood" but I always thought that was more symbolic than actual.
