Hello humans! :)

Star Wars fan reporting in for World Watch!

The Star Wars canon timeline is no stranger to characters of all species, races, genders, and sexualities but apparently this past week marks the first appearance of a canonically ace character as backed up by the author - Delilah S. Dawson.

The book is called Galaxy's Edge: Black Spire which serves as a sort of sequel to the book Phasma where the protagonist was introduced. Because we're in the season of a new Star Wars novel coming out literally every 2-4 weeks, I'm a little bit behind and haven't gotten to this particular book yet but I did hear this through the grapevine so figured i'd share!

Yay!

Cool, though there are a few characters that I can think of (canon and legends) that I would call asexual. Still cool that one was officially labeled as such.

Nice to have actual representation! Maybe I'll read the book (never read much of the Extended Universe before Disney made it non-canon, but now I don't want to read most of Disney out of spite).

Wait, I though R2-D2 was our Star Wars ace mascot?

Does it say she is asexual in the book? Or is it implied?

I will say there's a lot of great stuff in canon! They even borrow things from Legends. My favorites are Bloodline, Thrawn, and Dooku: Jedi Lost though the fan favorite is Lost Stars.

Really? XD I mean I guess R2 would be asexual considering it's a droid.

They don't say the word "asexual" in the book because it's Star Wars but the author did confirm that she is asexual and in the book she says she has never been attracted to men or women.

I'll probably pick it up at the library one of these days.

Nah. In both continuities we see love interests for him, with him even trying to get with Leia prior to finding out that she’s his sister. In legends he has a wife and son.

IMO, literally no one should care about this. Let's just stick with the cool space battles and lightsaber duels and leave people's sexualities out of the picture. I remember a time when no one cared what a particular character was into because that sort of thing is pretty irrelevant to the plot unless you're writing a porn novel, but apparently we've entered a new era where the sexualities of fictional characters are constantly scrutinized and shoved down people's throats. It's annoying and it needs to stop. I don't want to think about politics when I'm watching a movie, I just want to enjoy my movie.

Ah yes, because representation doesn't matter, and people in the LGBT community have not been scrutinizing media for potential queer-coded representation for literally decades, at least.

Also, all art is inherently political.

ESPECIALLY Star Wars.

Originally Trilogy? Vietnam much?

So what do you say about having an incel protagonist in the next Star Wars trilogy?

1. If you think Star Wars is only about space battles and lightsaber duels then you must only have a passing familiarity with it.

2. Heterosexual romance is an integral part of the Star Wars saga films.

3. There are actually sex scenes in Star Wars novels, and not all of them feature heterosexual couples however it is only the ones that don't that get widely criticized.

4. The sexualities of Star Wars characters are never made a big deal of in the plot because in space not being straight doesn't matter. A character might mention their home world where their two moms live or a pilot while thinking about his fellow pilot that just got blown up might reflect for two sentences on that one time they kissed.

5. Star Wars is just as much about space battles and lightsaber duels as it is about romance and politics though depending on what you're into, you might be drawn to certain stories within the Star Wars universe or certain parts of the story in the Star Wars universe more than others. My favorite part of Star Wars is the politics and the lore.

If it doesn't have cool explosions it's not Star Wars. Also sex scenes don't belong in the franchise.

The most popular canon Star Wars novel has not one but two sex scenes, its own manga adaptation, and made Star Wars fanboys around the world rethink their opinions about YA novels.

There are several Star Wars stories that feature little to no "cool explosions."

I would argue the thing with Leia suggests he isn’t aromantic, not that he isn’t asexual. And he isn’t even very romantic, gray-romantic maybe, because being in love with her didn’t ever really go anywhere, and discovering she was his sister actually didn’t change their relationship at all!

It’s a lot trickier to judge in the extended universe, since those books are written by a zillion different authors, and the characters are a little different in each version. However, I will say that when Mara Jade was first introduced, their relationship (once she quit hating his guts) was purely friendship.

In the actual canon continuity (the five movies), there is one vague crush and literally nothing else! But tons of family/friend relationships that are hugely important to him: his aunt and uncle, Biggs, Han and Leia, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Wedge, etc. etc. There’s a reason the bad guys used friends, not a love interest, to bait him in in Episode 5. Nope: I still claim Luke for the asexuals.

Going with only the movies, very few characters could be claimed to not be asexual. Jango Fett has himself cloned to have a son instead of going out and trying to find someone. Basically every Jedi (yes I know that there is a difference between ignoring something and not feeling something but that difference isn’t shown in the movies, all of the Jedi May as well be asexual excluding Anakin). I’d say that the character being in a state where it could be argued is more on the fact that the writers didn’t care for including sexual content in the film, to the point where only 2 characters are shown in a trilogy of movies to have any romance.

I haven't been active in these forums for over a year, and I just returned here because I just read the passage when she describes herself as an asexual! (without saying the word, but the meaning is very clear).

This literally filled my day with joy. There's finally a character who is aknowledged as ace in STAR WARS!

I agree with that statement. The SW universe has a prominently ace vibe to it, maybe one of the reasons why I've always loved it. But to have someone confirmed in canon is priceless. Now we just have to cross our fingers and hope they do it with more important characters.

I'm looking at you, Rey.

Where does she describe herself as ace?

It's nice that there is an ace character, but they should focus on writing good stories first before they start caring about representation. A book can do such a thing but I don't want anything related to sexuality in the movies.

Near the end of chapter 12. She doesn't say the words, mind you. But it's clear that she means she's aro ace.

I can relate to this.  Movies don't really have that content, I'd kind of like to keep it that way too....

I haven't kept up with Star Wars books.  Loved the original Heir to the Empire trilogy, haven't read much else.

Cool that there's an ace character though.

Wouldn't mind picking up a book again some time.

Just so many great non-Star Wars books out there... and so many Star Wars books.

Balance.

I haven't read any of the books since 2014 because of the decanonization of all the books that appeared until then. Of course there was some weird stuff in the old Expanded Universe, but there were also very good books like the Thrawn-Trilogy or the Republic Commando series. For me, the newer Star Was kind of sucks because it stagnates at the Empire vs Rebellion scenario. There is nothing new only things that I've already seen: X-Wings, TIE-Fighters, Death Star, Star Destroyers and the list goes on. Or maybe it's not Star Wars that has changed but rather I or my taste have changed.

There was a lot of great SW content in the EU, mostly what you've talked about, but it also went to some really weird places that I didn't like. There was just such a flood of stakes raising... in the history, it was constant superweapons and invading armies and clones of everyone, all crammed into a couple of decades. It really, really diluted the impact of the original trilogy and a lot of it was kinda dumb.

Disney made the same kind of mistake with Starkiller base just casually being a thing, but the books have so far been a little more restrained. I've only read a few, but the plots of the others are mostly tied to explaining all of the things Disney introduced with the sequel trilogy, which is good, because the rise of the First Order will need a LOT of explaining.
