Good luck to everyone who enters!

Might be a good position to run for if you ever wanted to help out, but didn't feel like being a mod would be a good fit for you.

Tempted... but this would be starting pretty much exactly at the same time as the fall semester for me, and I don't want to take on too many new commitments until I know just how my schedule is going to shake out.

So instead, I'll just wish luck to all candidates who choose to run. :cake:

I'm actually very interested, but I'm not throwing anything yet until I ask how time consuming the position is. School starts at the 11th for me, so I'll certainly have a couple of days to adapt.

Ideally looking for a DT that can contribute to DT activities on a weekly basis at most, while our guidelines suggest some contributions monthly at a minimum, but due to the current backlog of threads, this minimum should be discussed again at some point.

Your work can consist of PM'ing users that has come up in Declass threads, Declassifying a thread itself or Proofing already declassed threads and log such into the Admods Archive.  Previous members can find their strengths in doing a task daily or weekly, dedicating themselves to a particular task or do a bit of everything some time after training.  A DT can also contribute to Admods discussions relating to DT or all staff contributions.

DT can be a stepping stone into a further Mod or PT Role later on if you wish to, DT provides a small window into Staff life without Admod responsibilities.  There's a wealth of history and knowledge abut AVEN and it's development over the years for anyone with that extra spare time to read if one wishes.

I'm so sorry, I don't think I'm going to be able to run this time. I'm taking my porg hat back. I got very overwhelmed, as I remembered that 2019-2020 is going to be hell from an academical standpoint for me, and the weight of taking on new responsibilities is too much. Again, I'm very sorry, and I wish anybody who wants to run the best of luck!

Yeah, I really wish I could have had the chance to be part of the team, as AVEN means a lot to me. Sadly it's just not feasible right now, and I feel like it's more honest to withdraw now than to lead people on.

I can confirm this. I ran for DT on a whim 2.5 years ago and it gave me insight into what else staff does, which made me want to be a part of PT.

We're happy to answer any questions anyone considering running may have. :) I'm also open to PMs if someone is more comfortable asking questions that way.

I am thinking of it but i am really unsure because of my experiences with elections before. Plus i really dont want any power in any shape or form over others.

Aw, I'm sad to hear that you were put off from elections. :( Without pressure in either direction, I'll just say that, if you would like to run, I hope that you'll do so. I know there was a bit of drama in some past election discourse, and I'm sorry you got caught up in it, but I really hope that won't prevent you from giving it a go should you ever want to (whether now or at a later point in time).

The nice thing about this position (and, truth told, part of what makes it appeal to me more than modding) is that, to my understanding*, being on the Declassification Team really doesn't involve much of anything in the way of power over others (unless you count knowledge as power, of course!). You'd be removing sensitive or identifying information, proofreading, logging things, etc.—but you wouldn't be making decisions/wielding power in disciplinary matters or anything along those lines. :cake:

*I've obviously never been on the team myself, so if someone knows better on anything I say, please don't hesitate to correct me. :)

And by that you have information power over others. That could be used for blackmailing.

And yes i kind of do. To have knowledge that the regular members don't i without a doubt count as power.

Thanks i will think about it abit more, i really want to give something back.

I was hoping a DT vacancy would come up in August (after I’ve completed the minimum 6 months) 😊

Whilst I’d be interested in learning all the various tasks, I think I could add the most value proofreading as this forms a large part of my job.

I am therefore interested in running and hereby throw a cuddly 🐧 into the ring.

:) Oh, cool. You're running.

Just to let you know, the TOS says that Admods, Project Team, Declass Team, etc. aren't allowed to use or spread private information about others that they come across; there would be consequences for that.

You are not allowed but you still can. And just the knowledge that i  can be sitting on information like that can make other users uncomfortable. And that would make me really uncomfortable to have knowledge like that.

That's an integral aspect of being part of any online community though. There will always be people with access to more information than others. There's no way around that (other than not signing up at all to begin with). That's the good part about these elections - people get a say to state "Yes, I trust [person] to deal with delicate information properly". Is there a chance that this assumption ends up being wrong? Sure. Same goes for every other kind of interpersonal relationship, unfortunately.

They might trust me, but I might not trust myself with it.

So to be honest I am not sure if it is a good idea for me to run in this election.

:) Are you just nervous? Do you remember how uncertain you felt about the idea of attending the Meetup in Utrecht, last year? Well, you turned out to like it and enjoy yourself. Perhaps, this might be similar, too. There must've been a reason why you'd thought of running, in the first place.

This, part of electing in any position, is trust and when you are electing someone who has access to information, your trusting that they will not breach or spread private/delicate information.

I completely get that. I am just not sure i want that kind of knowledge myself. I am afraid that something i will learn will change my view of another member.

Thank you 😊

1. Do most of the current team have preferences / specialisms or do you all tend to do all DT tasks?

2. Why recruit a 6th member for the team now (or is this a replacement)?

3. What is your favourite part of the role?

4. How much do you tend to communicate and engage with other staff?

4. How much do you tend to communicate and engage with other staff?

1. I've seen patterns of preference observing all members, some do definitely more of one thing that the other.  That being said, I like to Proofread more than anything else, this the the quickest task to perform, with a few giant exceptions.  I have a weakness to Declassing Chat threads.  Members may also prefer to perform a batch of tasks once in a while, or a task every few days of a week.  Otherwise I can do all DT Tasks, I haven't tried DT Reports or the batch move of Admod/Report threats into Declass Forum yet.

2. This is a replacement after a member stepped down.  We like to keep the number at 5, usually because it is a magic number, if all are doing something at once, the Backlog moves pretty quickly.  We are still finding ways to incentivise DT tasking and at some point I'd like to revise the minimum work load for the sake of the Backlog.

3. Proofing is my favourite at the moment, I've developed a knack for scanning and reading missed Declass errors and adjust the Index accordingly.  It also means Logging the finished Thread into the Admod Archive, this leaves a permanent link in that subforum and thread for everyone to see.  It's become quite enjoyable to me.

4. Communication, nothing much direct unless it's official PM's or DT/Admod/All staff policy discussions or any mini-DT projects discussions which is rare for me at least.  On occasions, if a task is problematic, like an information heavy many pages threads with many chat logs etc, are communicated between DT staff as these may need multiple passes of Declass and Proofread.  There's a thread dedicated to DT questions for communications as well.

I've been a member for 12 years, but I've been active recently for a couple of months. How would you look at that?

What do a regular work session look like?

EDIT :

And can different times zones be a problem when communicating between other DTs?

EDIT 2:

If you don't communicate that much how do you know who those what?
