I've found all of my jobs via responding to online ads... To be honest I didn't realise there was any other way to look for jobs. Where do you find them, in the newpaper? Ads written on public toilet walls? I suppose you can hear about opportunities via a network of contacts but you generally need to be established in your field already to create a network, and even then  my experience of referrals for jobs from people I knew came in the form of emails saying "Heard you will be job hunting soon, check out this opportunity" with a link to an online ad!

Most companies will have the job opportunity advertised on their own website as well as on job ad sites, so if you are unsure about the adverts legitimacy check out the employers website careers section to check.

Yeah, there's no moderation whatsoever. It's basically 4chan for the working world. It sucks for people who desperately need work and annoying for legit companies that are getting hacked/spammed.

I'm kind of wondering it myself... how many jobs have I applied to that simply don't exist, or the company doesn't exist, or the jobs were posted by some sleaze ball looking to kidnap people for sex trafficking or something?

If I find one that looks decent, I do research the company a bit, and if I can't find anything or find bad reviews etc. it's a no-go.

you put up all your info yet not a single job from your location comes up

Glad to know it's not just me... I live in a good size city and the job boards post nearly squat. I bet there are legit jobs out there, employers just know better than to post them online so they don't get a bazillion desperate yahoos. Or they only want from their "inner circle". Yuck. I hate modern society. What happened to the days where you could walk down the street in a business suit and ten people would pull you aside asking if you're looking for a job?

I'm legit about to run the book store to get a newspaper...

There was one website I used probably only a few times, and only found a couple jobs to apply for. In that time though, there were probably at least 2 or 3 random phone calls that were trying to sign me up for some random course. I can't remember what most of those were, but I do remember that one of them did tell me that it'd cost me $18 000 for a mangement course, which they claimed could be used for 99% of jobs just after I told them it'd be a waste of time for any job I'd be going for.

Yeah as I said finding jobs via networking only really works once you are established in a specialised field. I helped a friend get a post-doc in my supervisors previous supervisors ex-post-docs lab. My previous supervisor put me in contact with my current boss, and sent me the online job ad of course! I hate networking but in many fields who you know really is important.

Are those ads for phone numbers to call?

I'd be suspicious of any company without a website these days! :) So as long as they have one of those, ads can be good tools to inform you about openings. But yeah, I'd always check their website to make sure they are listed there as well. (Or in case they have any Facebook groups or whatever)

As for job sites - linkedin seems very legit to me so far - and plenty of people looking to hire folks on there (though I suspect that might depend a lot on the industry). And reaching out to a recruiter on there is also a great, more personable way to connect before officially applying! :)

Worst case if it's a fake app, what do you lose? Another spammer having your phone number or email address? Meh, I could live with that for the chance of scoring a job! :D

(And good luck with your job hunt!!! :) )

I would have to second Linked In.

I've gotten solid job offers from there. Highly recommended for job searches or simply giving an employer the chance to find you.

Personally, I avoid non major job sites. Here I tend to use monster, and workopolis.

Indeed in my opinion is a slight step above Craigslist, so is hit or miss.

I have gone to enough sketchy interviews, that I triple check a company now before even calling.

IE I check their website, I look them up on sites like glassdoor (to see if there are employees that state any issues with working there), as well as any social media they have a footprint on.

Other than my resume, I give zero additional personal info until I have an interview.
