Corporations that run retail operations have all sorts of penalties for workers who try to unionize.  Usually retail jobs aren't fulltime; the employer can reduce the worker's hours whenever they want in retaliation for efforts to unionize.  Most retail workers make very little per hour, and they're desperate to keep their jobs and their hours.  They aren't considered to be professionals.

I've worked (several different times) for Target, and that is absolutely true, and no one is willing to make a stand for the workers (including the ones who aren't "professionals" but will probably be there for life). "Union" is a dirty word. If we can't have unions, we at least need a government willing to go to bat for the workers.
