My favorite would be the snow leopard. I had never even heard of snow leopards until I wrote a literacy report about them for my biology class last year.

Aren't they beautiful? :)

Fruit Bats are adorable! And, even though I'm a little Arachnophobic, I love that Tarantula's color. The Bearded Dragons are awesome as well!

Those aren't obscure.

(we have banana slugs here - big yellow slugs, some brighter than others)

When I was in high school (some decades ago), in biology class, we had to do a final paper on some animal. Most people did well-known animals (I recall one person chose dogs), but I chose echidnas. :)

Oh, how about the binturong? Also called bearcat, although it is neither. And supposedly smells like popcorn or corn chips. And it looks cool. :)

They are cool. I love that they were pretty much unknown to Western science until pretty recently. (they were "discovered" in the early 1900s, if I recall correctly) Of course locals knew about them long before then. :P

I did an elementary school project on their cousin, the platypus. Which happens to be my favourite animal of all.

Careful. A Platypus is different from a Duck-Billed Platypus. When it was discovered there was already another species called a Platypus.

Quote

the genus term was quickly discovered to already be in use as the name of the wood-boring ambrosia beetle genus Platypus
