Help us make the Ace and Aro conference (New York City, 29 June 2019)

Many of you will know AVEN will once again be participating at WorldPride, which this year is in NYC to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. In partnership with Aces NYC, AVEN plans to put on an ace & aro conference for Saturday, 29 June 2019.

A fundraiser for the conference has been set up. These conferences are not cheap to run and we would like to keep these events as accessible as possible so any donation would be greatly appreciated.

I have been an organiser of our WorldPride appearances on the previous 3 occasions - London (2012), Toronto (2014), Madrid (2017) - and I can tell you they are a lot of fun and a great way to spread ace vis and awareness. I am not personally participating this time, so this is just a stub. The conference has the full support of the AVEN Project Team. I am happy to take any questions to the organisers and respond back here! Maybe they'll chime in too.

Hello everyone!

I'm one of the assistant organizers of Aces NYC, the local asexual group, and we're co-running this conference with AVEN! It'll take place in Manhattan on Saturday, June 29th, and run all day. We're inviting ace and aro speakers and putting together events both social and educational for attendees. We want to put together the best conference possible, so we're fundraising to cover speaker honorariums, insurance fees, and other costs. Please help us by donating to our fundraiser and/or sharing the link: https://ca.gofundme.com/world-pride-ace-amp-aro-conference-2019. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me.

Thank you so much for your support! We hope to see you at the conference!

Not that I know of. You'd have to search for any other conferences online. However, we plan to record some presentations, so you'll be able to watch some of them later!

We're planning one in Edinburgh UK too. Details coming shortly. However this one - NYC - is WorldPride, so make it if you can!

Hello! I would love to be part of this! I am an event organizer myself (I almost singlehandedly organize Connecticut's first and only zine fest (http://facebook.com/litchfieldcountyzinefest)), and I'm a graphic designer in my day job. Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like another organizer. My fest is also in June, though, so I'll be splitting my activities between that and this. I could be of help with budgeting, organization, communicating with venues, advertising (I've done a lot of this), graphic design, getting event insurance, finding donors and small grants to apply to, etc. I can also teach zine workshops and am one of the most knowledgeable people on earth about asexuality in zines.

More about me: Olivia (she/her), will by 27 by June, live in NW Connecticut (but plan on taking the train down for pride and have a friend I could stay with in NYC), bi/pan ace, artist, graphic designer, narrative game dev, zine event organizer, zinester (person who makes zines), nerd, autistic (and one of my obsessions is ace representation and awareness), chronically ill (this may end up being an annoyance, but probably won't prevent me from coming to the conference), Kickstarter superbacker (and planning on Kickstarting an asexual comics anthology soon, so I'm pretty familiar with crowdfunding)

Hi,

This really interests me.  I am a PhD student at Georgia State University.  My dissertation focus is reclaiming asexual characters in literature prior to the Kinsey Studies identifying asexuality as an orientation.  I was wondering if you were looking for scholarly presentations for papers?  If so, I would be happy to work with you on a presentation.

Sincerely,

Keith Derrick

Hi Keith!

As of right now, we're actually at speaker capacity, just haven't announced everyone yet. However, if you're attending the conference, we will have discussion periods in which you could talk about your work!

I'll gladly help as much as I can, and wish I could go. However I see it's on the same day I have to be a commissioner at the Alaska Highland games this summer. I've been wanting to go to one of these since I helped with the one last year, since I heard they're very fun.
