Is there anything going on in Canada? (I hear very little Canadian news, but it seems pretty quiet compared to some other places right now)

I know, Its an election year and still nobody cares

is anything going on let's see:

  • blocked/delayed pipeline projects causing tension between environmentalists and oil field workers with politicians of all levels getting in the mess. Trudeau bought the pipeline and still isn't getting it built.
  • Plan to try to save critically endangered caribou would cost hundreds of jobs. local politicians and stakeholders are not being consulted #stoptheclosure
  • Liberals bring on a federal carbon tax, causing Canadian industries to lose investors to the un carbon taxed American competitors.
  •  28,000 asylum seekers crossed into Canada irregularly in the last 2 years. less than 1% have been sent back. wait times for a decision on an asylum application is now at 19 months.
  • It is now permitted for police to conduct a sobriety test up to 2 hours after you stopped driving. if you are found to be over the limit it is up to you to prove it happened after you parked your vehicle.
  •  Liberal and  Conservative parties have different ideas on gun control. Liberals want to ban handguns and assault rifles, Conservatives want a lifetime ban on gun ownership for anyone convicted of violent crime or gang activity.
  • China and Canada are arguing over allowing Huawei on the 5G network

So, yes a few things are going on, still, our political leaders are trying very hard to put their best foot forward as they get into campaign mode and stay scandal free.

China has used Canadian tourists seemingly as leverage, for the Huawei CEO being held, abruptly sentencing one caught in an alleged drug bust to death on short notice (after being sentenced to a high sentence behind bars).

I'm making a stop in China in a few days, but don't do or sell drugs so should be good O_O I will be buying bootlegged electronics and clothing though, so someone pray for me.

Marijuana was legalized last year, but not fully. I believe the full roll out is in 2020? Someone correct me if time frames are off.

In traffic, I now drive by so many cars that reek of weed. So something will need to be done for the unintended consequences.

Oh, and our prime minister went beast mode on one of his last handshakes with Trump. I don't like some of his policies, but this made me proud to be Canadian:

Spoiler

That was a long time ago (at least by US political reckoning these days :P :( ), but I remember it. Many Americans cheered it, too. :)

I think it was in Trump's first year in office, if my memory serves me well.

For me its irritating, as its front and center of a multi billion dollar infrastructure project approved in my city. So I can't even read local news anymore, without having this force fed to me.

Councilors are being blasted for picking the embattled corporation, when others were available.

So the UCP won in Alberta last night. I actually think this can be good for the NDP as it means they can fight the UCP and Federal Liberals on the things and not the BC Government which is also NDP. It looked weird to see 2 NDP Premiers arguing among themselves.

I hate the politics here (Alberta). I was furious on Tuesday night, and on Wed morning went to work feeling like I shouldn't be talking to anyone!

I feel like the UCP vote was a vote against the environment, against health care, against education and against the LGBTQA+ community...

I was so disappointed to hear about the result of the Alberta election--I'm living in the conservative gong-show of Manitoba (less gong show, perhaps, than Ontario? I just about died laughing in my office today when the Out Of Left Field podcast said Doug Ford is running Ontario like "used boat dealership"). The last election in Alberta, I was on a plane and as soon as we landed a guy behind me was talking on the phone and I heard about the previous NDP win that way lol... I wasn't interested in politics then, but I very much am now!
Going to be campaigning for my local NDP guy (who has been a great advocate on my behalf re national pharmacare!).

Super curious to see how PEI goes tomorrow... Possibility of a Green Party government, a Canadian first! Exciting!

The CBC is predicting a minority government either PC or Green. If the PCs win, maybe the Greens the Liberals could form a coalition.

If you want to delete a post entirely you can PM a mod to do it. Otherwise, you can edit it like you did - sometimes I have just tried to make a sort of relevant post; sometimes I have just left a single period in a post that I didn't want to let stand (when I wasn't a mod and couldn't just delete the whole post). You can find who the mod of the forum the post is in by going to the "who mods what" thread (and can find the link to that from any page by going up to the banners at the top, to the gray one that says "Terms of Service and Important Links".)

Boy that sounds complicated.  Better to just backspace out and put a period there.

Asking a mod is complicated? OK

The process you outlined in order to ask a mod sounds complicated to me.  That's simply my opnion, which is why I said "sounds" complicated, not "is" complicated.

I would not trust the CBC with predicting anything let alone who is going to win the federal election.

I'm in my 40s now, but wasn't interested in politics when I was a teenager. I made myself interested when I turned 18 and was able to vote. Now, I might get a little too interested (hence my rage when UCP won!).

omg, I was so excited when NDP won in 2015! I didn't think there was a chance (I don't think anyone else did, either!). I remember watching on tv, and posting on facebook on my tablet something along the lines of... "is this real? Is this really happening!?" It took me a while to get to sleep that night. 🙂  I didn't want to turn off the tv!

LOL! OK, so that NDP win was exactly 4 years ago today, and it looks like my initial reaction (thank you facebook memory feed!) was: "Holy, crap! Is this real...?" and then, "I never thought my vote would really "count" in Alberta!" and then I made myself a milkshake to celebrate! LOL!

Who will win this fall?

I'll tell you who will lose... the Canadian people.

We have a choice between the politician (Scheer) who appears beholden by the dairy cartel, or the politician (Trudeau) is giving every journalist in the country a $14,000 after tax incentive to ensure he wins the next election. We can also choose the politician (Singh) who praised Fidel Castro, the diseased communist dictator, along with Trudeau and feels a bit too much socialist solidarity with the dictator Maduro in Venezuela.

Doug Ford isn't much better...

Nor Jason Kenney...

I expect Scheer would be similar. 😞
