Did you know there was a manga about asexuality?

I didn't:

Apparently it looks like a shojo manga, but it use the tropes to completely change the story, it show what it would be for an asexual to live in a shojo manga where the female character always only cares about boys.

I must say I really really don't like manga as a medium, not sure I will try it too deeply. But it makes me curious, is there a list about movie/comics/tv show that depict asexuality? I know Todd from Bojack, of course, and Sheldon from TBBT, also they betrayed the character in the end. Anything else note worthy?

Kiryuu-sensei wa Renai ga Wakaranai

Is the title in case someone else doesn't trust links like me.

It sounds sort of interesting, but I'm probably not going to get into the series because I prefer mahou shoujo in general, and the only slice of life I like is Skip Beat! because Kyoko's supernatural abilities are basically something straight out of mahou shoujo anyways.

Thanks for sharing! I started reading the manga and it's so relatable, full of ace and aro moments. :D

Glad you enjoyed it. A friend told me about it when I was looking for some Ace/Aro representation. According to him there's a lot of manga male characters who do not show interest in women, but they're always fat/skinny nerds with glasses who watch too much porn...

Seriously, no one has a recommendation for a graphic novel, a tv show or a movie where the character is explicitly ace? Is the representation that bad?

I love manga, so I read all the chapters that are out now. I like the premise and the main character, but I admit I'm leery. Both of the guys seem like creeps, so if she ends up with either of them I'll be pretty disappointed.

if you want some good ace/aro rep in anime/manga, i recommend kino's journey (light novels and anime) and shimanami tasogare (manga). the protagonist of kino's journey is nonbinary and aroace (though it's never explicitly stated in words). shimanami tasogare is by yuhki kamatani--who identifies as x-gender and asexual--and features a host of queer characters, including an explicitly ace character.

i, an aroace person, personally find yuu from yagate kimi ni naru (bloom into you) really relatable, though whether or not she is actually aromantic seems to be up for debate recently (manga with anime starting in october).

haruhi from ouran high school host club (the anime, not the manga), is also easily interpreted as aroace, which is why i greatly prefer the anime to the manga.

Thanks for the info, I checked those out.

I feel the problem with trying to find asexuality in manga is that it is not the Japanese culture at all to try to name and classify sexuality. So you're kinda grasping at straw and waiting for the author to betray the character in the end by showing that yes, love conquers all, even asexuality.

The strange thing is I found this article on the washingtonpost claiming:

" According to the Japan Times, a new survey of Japanese people ages 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship. It gets worse: Around 42 percent of men and 44.2 percent of women admitted that they were virgins. "

As asexuals are barely 1% of the population, that can't be the explanation. It's more like a whole country decided sexuality wasn't worth the trouble. So maybe the artists are trying to talk about that rather than asexuality?

I found this list https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1r7AMBX9qJtQOlt7v-Pj46F4u48jkrN_Hjmpyzr8Ob5E/edit#gid=0 on tumblr a while ago. I'm not sure how exhaustive it is, but there's quite a lot of stuff on there and it seems to be updated pretty regularly. They also link to other compilations and, at least for tv shows, judge how good the representation is.

Never heard of nearly all of these, but I'll definitely check them out. Thanks!

The opinion on the House episode made me laugh and cringe at the same time because when I watched it I hadn't admitted to myself I was asexual and it was... not helpful to say the least.

Why there are not Mushishi 蟲師?main character Ginko ギンコ is asexual or aromatic. Ginko don't feel love to any person. Mushishi is fantasy and science fiction and horror and mysterious story.

I add new title. this is ドロヘドロ=Dorohedoro. by 林田球=Hayashida Kyu. main characters Kaiman and Nikaidou have different gender. Kaiman is male character. Nikaidou is female character. but they are not lovers.

edit:November 3

relationship of Kaiman and Nikaidou is not romantic, not love. it is friendship. Dorohedoro don't betray ace people. this manga is including action. some people might to think gore.

yes. sometimes I disgusted with manga. Dorohedoro and Mushishi don't betray with ace people.

Hello. everyone. I add new title. this is "Junjo otome Mako chan"

in Japanese"純情乙女 マコちゃん"

main character Mako (マコ) is cross-dressing cute boy. Mako is so cute. he is feeling love to a guy. Maco is not ace. "a guy" is ace. a guy's name is Dai(ダイ). Dai is speaking like Japanese drag queen. his end of sentence is "wayo, dawa, soune,wa". when Dai was a kid, some bad kids said to Dai "I know. Dai, are you drag queen?". Dai lied to himself and classmates. Dai said "Yes. why you know?". Dai needed to play role like buffoonery. derogatory name of drag queen in Japanese is "Okama". okama is playing like crowning. many kids like crowning. before of "are you drag queen?" , Dai said to a classmate girl "what is loving you? it is strange". a classmate girl cryed. other crassmates boy and girl said to Dai. "stranger is you, Dai". sadly.

hey, this spoiler, I don't mean to scare you.

Spoiler

I dislike Japanese drag queen of TV show.
