Fog Brain
So for several years now, I've been trying to find a name. This sort of thing has probably gone around before, but I couldn't find it... Either way, I need a name. I have been kind of guessing thus far what I should do, but some of you may have answers. You can post your stories, maybe I or someone else can find them useful. And any tips and tricks you wish you knew or had to learn the hard way can be mentioned.
RoseGoesToYale
I want to legally change my name as soon as possible in the future. I still haven't pinpointed one yet, but I have it down to 3. First, and maybe obvious, is make sure you like the sound of it. Write it out and practice introducing yourself with it to see how it feels. As for finding an actual name, there are a number of ways you could do it: if you have any words, concepts, or objects that are special to you, you can try searching for names with those words or meanings. Also if you have letters in the alphabet you feel drawn to, look at those names. Finally, if you're interested in genealogy at all, you can look at names from the nationalities of your ancestors. ReyGraves
I wanted to keep the first initial of my birth name, however I didn’t find any male/neutral names that I liked that start with that letter. (Two names in particular were attractive to me but even though I liked the sound and look of them I just didn’t like them when applied to me.) So then I looked into nicknames of my name. I ended up morphing the nickname so my name is actually a cousin of a nickname of my name. After that I almost obsessively wrote the name (in the backs of notebooks like it was the name of a crush or something.) I then started using it online (like here, Twitter, and any games that required a username). Then I started using it in real life. (Then a few months after that I realized I needed to pick a middle name. This process was slightly different as I wanted to keep the family significance of my original. So I picked a different name that was still within my dads side of the family) I did try asking my mom what she would’ve named me if I was a boy (but they had waited until they knew my sex to pick names). But she said another name would have been Schuyler (Skylar). (I decided I didn’t like that name either in any forms of spelling (for myself)). I mostly used baby name sites and nameberry(?) or something where people asked about possible names or nicknames for their kids.
Finn.
Figure out what criteria are important to you. I wanted a short name, possibly unisex, non religious, pronounced similarly in English and German. Go through name lists and name websites online. Try using a name you like online, writing it down, reading it in reference to yourself, will give you a sense for it and if it feels right. My first name choice failed that test. Some tumblr blogs do name validation! You can send in your name and pronouns, possibly even a topic, and they will write a short paragraph for you. Or name associations, that's nice too, to kind of make it part of your identity. These seem to be active: https://transnamefinder.tumblr.com/ https://moodsofthequeersboard.tumblr.com/ https://trans-folks-positivity.tumblr.com/ https://name-associating.tumblr.com/ Having your new name written on a starbucks cup is cool too! That way you can use it out loud and have people call you by it as well. There's also the pronoun dressing room http://www.pronouns.failedslacker.com/. You can tell them what name and pronouns/descriptions you use, and then pick a story (I think there are 4 to choose from) where they insert those.
