Asexuality Research Compendium

Pramana

Recommended Posts

I've compiled a near complete bibliography of asexuality and aromantic academic research available to date, organized by subtopic, and including some seminal articles in sex research that contain important background theory. I've decided to omit fringe articles in order to focus on those articles which make a substantive contribution to the field. I'm hoping that this will be useful to students and other interested parties.

I commend your use of MLA format. You know what's really great about MLA format? Some versions of MLA format include links. And I like links because links can help me index all of this. (But really, though, I like your research articles, just please gimme links if at all possible. My indexing helps maintain a history of Asexuality visibility as well as provide others that want research sources with access to such).

@Pramana please gimme some links so I can index all of this (I'll be glad to index things if I have links to it, but I can't do that without links)

Will do. I just copied this from a bibliography that I've complied for other purposes, but I can go through and add links. I'll ping you when I'm done.

I've added links to all the ones for which I can find publicly accessible versions. I've organized the list according to subtopic so that it will be useful to students who are writing papers on asexuality, and who can probably access most of the books and articles through their college library systems.

I've made a few updates to this list, but as far as I can tell nothing too exciting has appeared in asexuality studies during the intervening months.

@Pramana I think you are the person to ask. Have you come across the work of an Israeli professor, Eli Somer? Some years ago , he coined the phrase 'Maladaptive Dreaming'. I read the report of his original study because it seemed to have some bearing on the kind of fantasising that I enjoy, maybe linking into a(n)egoace, autochorri,  but I realised that I'm very different from the people he studies and wrote about. I'm far happier and more positive for starters. I've a blog post about Mal. Dreaming more or less written, but I came across this thread. I wondered if you have anything you could suggest in terms of recent research. Thank you

We do have an asexual research thread here: https://www.asexuality.org/en/topic/161469-the-new-asexual-research-thread/

Since it is my thread (from back when I was the World Watch mod), I would be glad to cross reference and add in any that I missed! :)

I see a few 2018 articles that can be added to our current index as well: https://www.asexuality.org/en/topic/165708-2018-index/

I am so sorry @scarletlatitude I didn't look to see who started the research thread. I just know that Pramana's name comes up a lot on these sorts of topics. The research I mentioned doesn't refer to asexuality so it's probably not  a relevant addition. It's a clinical study about people whose fantasies effectively get out of hand. I made a link in my own head with Research I've read about fantasies and I'd have liked to learn more. Hence my post. I'll dig out the reference and post it to you in this thread if I may. That way, you'll be able to decide if it's of general relevance.

@scarletlatitude (and Pramana) and further to the above post, I was referring to Maladaptive Dreaming: A Qualitative Inquiry by Eli Somer, PhD published in a Paper for the Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy Vol 32 No2/3 Fall 2002.

I'm just interested. I don't believe I fall into the MD category though I can see a  similarity with my sort of  anegoace third person fantasies.

@Tunhope I'm afraid i don't know anything about maladaptive daydreaming, although it sounds like an interesting concept.

@scarletlatitude I think this list has more articles than the previous asexuality research threads, and I organized it by subcategory because I thought that would be more useful for students. Regarding your remark about how these sorts of threads get lost, perhaps it would make sense to include a research compendium among AVEN's main page materials?

I will have to ask the powers that be about that, but it is a good idea. Thanks! :)

Update: The project team has told me that they will be glad to add it! We will work on that soon!

Update -- I am still working on this... but real life things have gotten all up in the way, so this has moved to the back burner for now. I will resume later! :)

I was thinking that it might also be worthwhile to create an asexual online community history repository. There's plenty of information about the history of AVEN and other asexuality sites that is in danger of being lost but for the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. For example, it looks like Apositive could be going offline soon, and there were some interesting discussions that happened there. Similarly, the Official Asexual/Nonlibidoism Society is only accessible through the Internet Archive, and sometimes even access to it there is blocked.

I conducted another database sweep (The Journal of Sex Research, The Archives of Sexual Behavior, and a university library repository) and found just two new journal articles published since the summer, neither of which represent a significant advance over previous research.

I never cease to be amazed by the number of authors who believe that asexuality is a tool for taking down capitalism and the patriarchy. I'm thinking that it might be time to make two separate research bibliographies: those articles which are worth reading, and those articles which aren't.

I would probably frame it as "authors who believe that [writing about how] asexuality is a tool for taking down capitalism and the patriarchy [is a good way to pad their CVs]", but this is one of the main reasons I gave up on maintaining my bibliography of academic work on asexuality.  Most of the stuff published was total garbage (no original research, not good review of existing research, poorly reasoned, and very formulaic application of PoMo nonsense), but I was involved in asexuality research and didn't want to go and start a controversy by recreating the bibliography in a way that omitted a lot of stuff from the list.

Sometimes it is authors who are just going through a formula to publish another journal article. Other times it is authors who are emotinaly invested in the type of social justice politics that is associated with Tumblr.

Update: I just did a refresh so this should be a fairly comprehensive list of asexuality research published to the end of 2018. I've chosen to be a little more selective, omitting some articles that mention asexuality only within the context of discussing some other topic, or that go off on speculative postmodern tangents.
