Ortac
I just wanted to share this link again, and say to any anglophones reading this, please make note of point number 23. https://www.thelocal.fr/20180129/french-language-learn-things-you-dont-know-about-french-before-you-move-here I often see English speaking tourists here posing in front of cameras who call out "Fromage!" and they seem oblivious to how daft it makes them look. If you must call out anything, the word you want if you're in France is "Ouistiti" (it means marmoset, by the way).

In writing, you’re right, it’s pretty much the same. We have a few grammar rules that differ and some words that don’t exist in France (I guess it’s true the other way around too) but overall, it’s really similar. Speaking, you can difinetely understand each other but the accents are very different and a lot of words or expressions don’t mean the same thing. It’s just like UK English and US English.
Acing It
You mean proper English and US English? <runs away and hides> Love your link Ortac. In my experience (another controversial point coming up!) the British are very good at stereotyping people. They do it with the Germans and the Dutch as well. Not that it doesn't happen elsewhere but I've noticed it a lot here. What's up with picturing the French with a garland of onions for instance??? I know it's historical but do you need to keep going on about it? Very strange. </pseudorant over> I love the different words the French have. Bagnole for instance. Always makes me chuckle. Accents. Ah yes. I lived in the south of France for a while (Carnon) and apart from the 'different' culture, the local language took some getting used to.
Palovana
@Ortac I read it and I also saw it says introducing yourself with "Je m'appelle..." is uncommon. So what is more common? Would I just say "Je suis Palovana"?

So what is more common? Would I just say "Je suis Palovana"? It is probably is more common to simply say «je suis», but saying «je m'appelle» to introduce yourself is fine too. Just like in English it would be fine to say "I'm called Palovana" but you would probably be more likely to simply say "I'm Palovana".
Ortac
Further to that, I would say that a French speaking child is more likely to use "je m'appelle" just like an English speaking child might be more likely to say "I'm called", whilst adults would be more likely to use "je suis" or "I'm".

Especially if they're Americans. A lot of Americans are notoriously uncultured and simple-minded tourists. And I say that as an American, not because I myself behave this way, but because of my observations of other Americans while abroad. (Well at least in Canada and Mexico, as those are the only other countries I've been to yet.)

Why would English speaking people blatantly say "Fromage" I'd legit tell them I'm French Canadian and say it would make sense for actual French people to say that lol and I'd tell them: "Gruyere?" (not sure I wrote that type of cheese right lol XD ) My favorite cheese is parmesan btw

I'm sure they're not stupid enough to think this will work to make people look like they're smiling.

Kersenne
