Orianaro
Bonjour, je suis canadien donc je peux parler francais. Aussi le franglais English is my first language, but we learn french in school and ew I can't write grammar, I get too self conscious about it thus why I've swapped back to english. I've been listening to french podcasts and youtube videos, the like, to try and get back into it and feel more fluent. I love the difference between Quebec and France French, we learned Quebec style (since Canada) in school, but most of the online sources are all from France. Knowing French is awesome
Leilamy
Hey there ! I AM french so I'm more than good at writing it haha. It's more likely that I make faults while talking in English. So if anybody wanna talk, I'm there Salut la compagnie !

Wissem
@Nai Wow that's cool! I remember it as being a very long and boring poem to memorize.
Wizadora

I never got used to the cold days in Montreal tbh.

In French speaking areas of Belgium and Switzerland, the word for 70 is septante (as opposed to soixante-dix in France) and for 90 it is nonante (as opposed to quatre-vingt-dix in France. (Curiously, the most common word for 80 is still quatre-vingt, although huitante and even octante do exist). They way that the numbers between 70 and 99 are said in France was originally I believe only a Parisian thing. At one time, people in other areas in France used words for 70 and 90 which are similar to what is used in Belgium and Switzerland today. However, at one point in history the Parisians in their usual arrogance decided that they were right and that everyone else was wrong, and they enforced their way of speaking on the whole country. Of course, the Parisians had no jurisdiction in Belgium or Switzerland, so people there were free to carry on speaking the way they wished. (I have to admit, I am not sure what they say for these numbers in Québec, maybe someone could tell me!)

RoseGoesToYale

iff
Pardon my interruption (and my lack of French), I was reading a short story set in France where the child in it named their teddy bear Nounours which I looked up as meaning teddy bear but also came across Ours en peluche as also meaning teddy bear. What is the difference between the two terms?
Ortac
16 hours ago, festiff said: What is the difference between the two terms? Not a lot really, they both mean exactly the same thing. Ours en peluche could perhaps be considered the more "formal" name for it whilst Nounours would be the "kiddy speak" word. Many kids and adults would probably use them interchangeably though. The word peluche by itself would best be translated as "soft toy" which could resemble any sort of animal or creature, whilst ours en peluche is specifically a bear.

kiaroskuro
Actually, the word plush is derived from peluche, as is the German word Plüsch.
