i'm just interested in the results on this.

this is about more than just gambling on one big event (for example the grand national)

Nah. It's not like I'm overly strapped for cash, but I still value money too much to just gamble it away.

I don't gamble, but I'm interested in seeing the different gambling activities that other people enjoy. I think the only activities I would possibly gamble over are betting on games when I'm playing with friends, or entering raffles. Maybe slot machines, if I somehow ended up at a casino. :P

Slot machines, raffles at our social club, cards with friends (low stakes!), horses and dogs occasionally

Once in a while I go to a casino or get a lottery ticket, and I've also bet on horse races before.

I’ve never gambled. I’ve been to casinos more times than I could possibly count - I’m from Atlantic City - but I just don’t see the point? I’ll keep my money and spend it on fun stuff, thanks.

I contribute to a pool for lottery tickets work coworkers for the camaraderie. I don't think that really counts, as I've never bought lottery tickets on my own. I don't bet on sporting events. Casinos don't appeal to me. When I go to them I see mostly people staring at the screen of their VLT. It's not even a social activity. I don't see the thrill of betting. It doesn't work in my favour, so I'd rather use the money I have for something else, like keeping it in a bank account to ease my anxiety.

When I was in Las Vegas I gambled 10 dollar on a slotmachine and got 100 dollar back. That was last new years eve. Haven't gambled since :P

My gambling extends to buying a few lottery tickets about once a year.

I did on one occasion spend some time in Las Vegas. Before I went, I had no idea whether I would get sucked into it and turn out to be a gambler or not. As it happens, I did not gamble a single cent. I just could not bring myself to do it. This is not because I don’t approve of gambling or think there is anything wrong or immoral about it, I just didn’t want to lose any of my money! I was even in the right place at the right time to witness a stereotypical Texan bloke win $148,000 on a slot machine, but even seeing that that didn’t tempt me.

I did once however wander into a casino in France and came across an automatic roulette thingy without an attendant, and being in what for me was an unusual mood, I decided to have a go at some martingale bets. I put in €10, did a red/black bet, won, and doubled it to €20. I then bet that and won again, doubled it to €40. I then panicked a bit, couldn’t bring myself to go any further, and cashed out with my €30 profit. That is the only time I have ever done any proper gambling.

I've been to Las Vegas before....but I was only 11 at the time so I was too young to gamble. :P

I don't like gambling and it's one of the things I am really judgmental about even though I know I shouldn't be. Not my life, not my choices. I'm working on that.

Really though, I think gambling is stupid. Throwing away money is stupid and even if you win, it's stupid to have even risked it in the first place. Especially since winning usually only makes you want to gamble more and even if you're ahead in the beginning, odds are you still lose in the end. Or best case, break even. What's even the point? I respect more the people who bring a set amount of money and stick to it, like $50 and whatever happens happens, but also do you know how much coffee you can get for $50? Or groceries? A good pair of winter boots? But to be fair, I've never been at a financially secure enough place where losing fifty bucks wouldn't hurt me in a significant way. Still.. if you really don't care what happens to your money, donate to charity. They need a lot more than your casino does.

I don't have major feelings about small things like scratch-offs or lottery tickets, except I know people who buy these every day and never win anything that makes it worth it so it's kind of sad and a waste.

checked every 7-12 months because I sometimes buy a lottery ticket, but I usually forget, so it rather doesn't happen more than twice a year. I don't have much luck anyway. :P

my mother is a gambling addict, though. it was enough for me to watch her ._.

Yes I play poker live poker in particular and I really like it, I consider myself to be "semi"-professional like I play part time on and off and I know about the ins and outs of the game and I do win over the long run. However it is a huge grind and it is a mentally tough game, so one must be mentally tough in order to succeed in this game.

Last year I played a lot of live poker like some sessions lasted for over 15 hours! This year I have another plans and I am going to dedicate my time to other things, but I will be at the tables soon or later! =]

I gamble very rarely- maybe once or twice a year.  I don't really see a lot of appeal in gambling personally, but I'll do it every once in a while.

I don't gamble, but my extended family usually buy scratch cards as presents to each others. Thus I also buy them as presents if I can't think of anything better, and I get them from family members sometimes. But I'd never buy one for myself, nor do I think they are very exciting. They are designed to make it seem like you aaaalmost won that large sum, but in actuality you barely get your money back at best.

My dad entered me in his company's super bowl pool a few times, if that counts. Other than that, nope.

I am a gambler, and I've had a pretty major gambling problem for the last couple of years which has screwed me financially. I've always enjoyed gambling but what really kicked it off was a big win on a scratch card (£1350) then a massive win (£7000) on an online slots site in 2015.

I haven't got professional help, I'm managing it myself and with help from my Mum and while I do still buy scratch cards, I'm not blowing all my wages in 2 days any more, so silver linings and all that.

Wow I guess with your £8350 winnings you got all the money that you have lost back plus more?!

Nope, hence the bit where I said winning that money was what kicked off the problem.

Oh I see, I understood now well I hope you are managing your "impulses" better now; I play poker myself but not against the house because when you play any game against the house have the edge, you can still win of course but not over the long run.

Anyway take care and be careful.

  • 3 months later...

I've never seen the appeal of gambling, an activity whereby statistically you're probably going to lose more money than you win.
