Scottthespy
Inspired by the very recent topic "Words you wish you had never heard. TMI." by AByronJ.maybe?, I present a place to post not words that disquiet, but rather words that tickle, delight, and enthrall. A few that have filled me with unreasonable amounts of joy include: Octopodes (awk-TUP-oh-dees) - Explanation here. Just the fact that this is a thing. Thwart - to foil or stop, as in a plan. I just like how the word feels when you say it. Quinquages'ism (no idea on the pronunciation) - According to this ninety year old children's school primer dictionary I got from my Granny: "Quingquages'ism, a. [L., fiftieth] fiftieth; (Sunday) the Sunday falling fifty days before Easter." Now, to me, that sounds like the book is saying there's a specific (and complex) word for the Sunday falling fifty days before Easter. Whether or not that is the case, it does clearly say the phrase 'the Sunday falling fifty days before Easter'. But...Easter is ON a Sunday...and fifty is not divisible by seven. There IS no Sunday falling fifty days before Easter...ever. This bizzar situation has made the word stick in my head and brought me many giggles showing it to other people to get their reactions. Araminta
"Coyote". Even though it is both a French and an English word, it is pronounced very differently ( \kɔ.jɔt\ in French). I was surprised when I learnt the English pronunciation, I think it sounds so cute. I love hearing it. Also, "glitter", "haphazard", "dream", "starlight", "bubbly", "candle".
