RIP Les Binks.

This reminded me once again that I'm only familiar with a fraction of Judas Priest's output.

I've recently given another listen to the first album by Leaves' Eyes. Most of is it pretty mellow and then THIS starts playing. That beginning 😮

Same surname, but apparently no relation to Anneke:

Just curious, is there a good way to start listening to metal music? I'm a casual alt-rock listener who gets very overwhelmed by metal music. It just seems like a daunting genre to start listening to 😅

You could follow the historical pipeline: Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Metallica to newer subgenres.

I personally joined through Avenged Sevenfold, they have a wide range of styles, and symphonic metal like Nightwish, Eluveitie

I started with female fronted bands, so I second the Nightwish choice @FJO8 suggested, as well some other softer bands in that vein like Xandria, Within Temptation or Epica (Epica has a growler too, so be warned, if that's not your preferred type of vocal). Eluveitie has heaps of folk instruments, if that's your thing, but they also have quite a bit of growl/raspy vocals in some songs. Therion (excluding the first two or three albums) is also an interesting choice, especially since they have had a variety of female and male vocalists over the years (although I'm not familiar with their newer endevours).

If you like male vocalists with a good range accompanied by more melodic type of metal, check out Kamelot. Both Roy Khan and Tommy Karevik can do wonders vocally.

@FJO8 @Dagomir I actually started listening to Dream Theater today and found that they fit my general interest in instrument-oriented music. Not sure if they qualify as metal though

Yeah, I would place them close to Metallica and Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and other classic Rock/early Heavy Metal bands.

That being said, maybe power metal is more your thing. I recommend Hammerfall and Manowar, maybe Doro

Dream Theater are def in the metal genre. You might like symphonic metal also, like Within Temptation.

If you like DT you may also like Symphony X.

Also, check out Arjen Anthony Lucassen and his many projects (such as Ayreon). He has worked with a wide variety of instrumentalists and vocalists over the years, including those from Dream Theater.

@Sister Mercurial I like that 👍

How is your metal exploration progressing? :)

I've heard this for the first time yesterday.

Since YouTube keeps recommending me old Nightwish concerts, I thought I'd post one.

And here's something I've just found. People in the comment section under the video point out that it sounds like a mix of doom metal and blues with elements of jazz. Interesting stuff.

A bit late, but I'm going to make a playlist of different metal songs to listen to tonight. Any specific song recommendations are greatly appreciated, since I never reliably find the songs I like through the band's most-played songs. If only there was a way to sort songs by sub-genre...

You said you liked Dream Theater. I'm not familiar with their songs enough to recommend something, but here are some examples of songs by bands which are sometimes quoted as either similar in style, influenced by or just featuring some of the DT musicians. Alternatively, just some long songs that I like :P

Symphony X- Bastards of the Machine

Symphony X- Iconoclast

Ayreon - The Sixth Extinction

Ayreon - The Fifth Extinction

Ayreon - Isis and Osiris

Ayreon - Dawn Of A Million Souls

Ayreon - Day Two: Isolation

Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Metallica - The Unforgiven

Metallica - The Unforgiven II

Nightwish - Beauty of the Beast

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score

plus what @KVA1983 wrote 👍

I haven't listened to Symphony X in ages!

I haven't either (and when I did it was the same 6 or 7 songs) :P But I remembered liking those two, so on the list they went.

This has been on my mind today, so here it is:
