Everyone would be suspicious about me and some might try to hit on me, but I'm sure I'd still be good friends with a lot of guys out there. I've somehow been really good at making friends with people of the opposite sex.

@TON at least you have the option of donating sperm without actually having to have sex with anyone; unless the sperm banks are still in tact, then the ladies can raid them. We females are screwed in terms of re-population if there's only one of us left on a planet full of males.

Not really the idea that all men would be rapists. Just in terms of the idea of repopulating the earth coming down to one woman would mean that she would need to reproduce, quite a few times I'd imagine. But yes, I do imagine that the idea of rape would at least cross some men's minds in that situation. The same with women wanting to collect sperm from the last man to impregnate themselves with. In my case I would not be at all okay with having kids, even if my refusal to reproduce meant the end of the human species. So off a cliff I'd go.

It is literally impossible to save the species if there is only one male or one female left.

You could probably do it really slowly if you let people of the sex that's almost gone do certain things like crazy. I would rather let the human population die anyways. So what if they all die and humans are gone from the world? I'm sure the Earth would be better off anyway.

Well the entire species is genetically descended from one male and one female at different time periods so I rather suspect you could, especially with modern technology.

It's easier if it's just one man, but still, genetic diversity would be too low.

Half siblings would be significant overlap, but boy and girl from different mothers would not result in inbred offspring.

Still, offspring of a boy and girl from unique mothers will not result in as significantly inbred offspring, so in the case that there is a single male, the species could repropogate fairly safely. It just requires keeping children socialised separately, so they associate children by the same mother as siblings, and children of other mothers as valid potential mates.

Two females could reproduce without any males or pre-harvested sperm.  It is possible to extract stem cells that can can become spermatogonial from bone marrow of females that can be used to fertilize eggs.  While not yet used to fertilize a  human egg (as far as I know), primarily due to ethical concerns, I imagine if the future of the human race was at risk that this would be a priority.

Yes and yes. I'm getting the idea for a new story just thinking about it :]

 

In a one man scenario, sperm banks are a thing, so the women can still have children. I guess with the one man scenario, it would be the issue of infrastructure collapse that would cause a possible regression of society. While humanity itself might not die off, we'd lose a good amount of our society and its norms.

 

However, in the one woman scenario, human extinction would most likely be inevitable, unless you are able to develop artificial wombs/artificial eggs. Best case scenario, the female agrees to donate her eggs and has kids. Worst case scenario, the female either wants nothing to do with pregnancy, is far too fearful with other people, or dies (either by suicide, freak natural causes or assault. Suicide is very likely at this point.) However, you might be able to get the last female to donate her sex organs and eggs, which would significantly speed up research. However, artificial wombs are still far off (mostly due to ethical concerns) but I would imagine that if the end of all humanity as we know it is looming, then searching for a way to create an artificial womb and eggs would most likely be a top priority.

 

Either way, both routes would cause the end of civilization as we know it, if not outright human extinction.

I'm rather hopeful in terms of not meeting a rapist. I have enough faith in the people I know, and men in general to have the sense not to rape someone the moment a large portion of the world disappears.
