Research Participation Request: A comparison of perceived value similarity in asexual and z-sexual couples

Tori Maddock from Cardiff University has contacted AVEN about the following research project on "A comparison of perceived value similarity in asexual and z-sexual couples":

Previous research has studied relationships and values almost exclusively with heterosexual participants, with some tentative branching into homosexual and bisexual relationships. As asexuality is becoming a more publicised and accepted orientation, the difference in values that asexuals may hold to z-sexuals (other orientations) needs to be quantified to improve the validity and usefulness of relationship research.

In order to study this, we need to collect data from participants in monogamous relationships where at least one member is asexual. Both members of the relationship will have the opportunity to complete some questionnaires assessing their personal values, their perception of their partner’s values, and how they perceive their own relationship. These questionnaires should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete in total.

Participation is restricted to adults of 18 years or over, who are in a monogamous relationship.

If you are interested in taking part or have any questions about the research, please contact Tori at

This research request has been approved by the Research Approval Board for advertising on AVEN.

Huh. Am I the only one who finds this title difficult to understand? So... "z-sexual" is somebody who is not asexual. "value similarity" is... what? Or is it "perceived value, similarity between"? Just wondering if there is an easier way to put it.

Hi! Author of the study here. Sorry for the confusion, z-sexual is indeed a 'catch-all' term for someone who is not asexual. Perceived value similarity is essentially how similar a person believes their values to be to another person's values. In this context, values are concepts that influence the ways that people act and how they perceive events. Hope that clears it up.
