Question. (TMI)

So what's the deal with shaving private areas? That always confuses me. What's the appeal?

Rather not have my hair peeking out from my bathing suit :P

I think it's also just simply pleasing to some people, be it aesthetically, sexually, etc.

EDIT: It can also get itchy down there because of the hair, plus that stuff can get annoying because it's thick and sheds a lot. For some they'd much rather lop it all off than deal with it.

There could be lots of reason why a person would shave.

They think it looks good

The hair down there might grow a bit to long and it's uncomfortable to walk around

They feel it's more hygienic

Their partner likes it better

Peer pressure

Culture

They've got a case of crabs

They feel the need for pit & private area uniformity

They secretly want to be a dolphin

lots of reasons

Aesthetic, comfort ... hygiene. Nothing worse than thick hair down there imo, cause it gets caked with various body fluids and knots up.

Also, on the TMI side...

Hair in your teeth/down your throat during oral is a good way to start to choke.

Body hair on anywhere other than the head and face is ugly. What more reason do you need than that?

Kinda makes you wonder why we have that, huh?

Everyone has their reason. I don't personally shave down there, and I've just grown used to that.

this is a really great reason

Why we have hair anywhere other than our heads, you mean? Well, we are mammals. Arguably it's a human feature which is, like our wisdom teeth or our appendix, somewhat obsolete, although not entirely.

Shaving's a right chore, though. <_<

Just for like... uh... giving a woman oral... couldn't you just use a dental dam? Regardless of whether or not they shave... prevents contact with body fluids. Sounds like a good thing.

Though I can't figure out for the life of me how someone could stand... licking a piece of... latex.

Sometimes it's hard to stop. It starts with the ankle area because that's what people can see of my legs, because if I wear pants, only capri. But then, why not the thighs? Better, while I've got my razor. Hmm. What about the two random hairs that no one can see that grow by my belly button? Why not? Why not fix up the armpits? I mean, can't have armpit hair. What about the eyebrows? The three hairs by my lip? Got some peach fuzz on the cheek?

.... But then, you think, what else can be done? Ah yes! I forgot---I forgot that I need to look like a Barbieâ„¢ and it's fun. I draw my eyebrows on and everything.

One time I wore a sweatshirt to school and I don't know how it got there because I had literally just washed this sweatshirt, my favorite sweatshirt, and after my second class I noticed a hair on the shoulder. NEVER AGAIN.

I'm... guessing you don't own excessively hairy pets.

The minute my clothes come out of the wash they're covered in cat hair. I gave up caring a long time ago.

I wish you could actually put that and TMI in the title so I don't accidentally click this thread. xD

I... honestly don't know, never tried personally. Though, given the amount of hair I have when I don't at least trim, I would imagine some would still get somewhere. You could braid mine if I just left it.

As an ageing sexual, it seems to me that the whole shaving thing is basically part of people assuming what they see on porn is normal, and expecting if from their partners. Pre the internet proliferation of porn, it wasn't really a thing. Trimming maybe, but not waxing. Porn likes shaved/waxed because it's easier to see what's happening, simple as that.

That hair is a pain, to be honest. It sheds all over in the bathroom over time, which is rather gross on its own, but also gets... caught in various clothes, and on some toilet seats. I don't really see why anyone *wouldn't* want to be rid of it.

For me it would have absolutely nothing to do with sex or porn or whatever.

Humans are actually weird among mammals in that we are largely hairless except for our private areas (and heads). Most mammals that have fur all over their bodies actually lack hair in their genial areas.

I've read that the purpose of pubic hair is actually one of hygiene and protection. Evolutionarily speaking anyway. We wear clothes now, so it's kind of less of an issue.

As for me, I do, only because I'm shaving my legs so might as well. No one is ever gonna see it anyway. It's just what I want and choose to do, as it should be for anyone.

I don't mow the entire lawn as I can't be bothered, but there are some areas I upkeep because of how sensitive my skin is. I will trim parts of it at certain times of the month.

I can see all sorts of sexual and non-sexual reasons for people to want to tend to this part of the body. It's a "you do you" kind of thing.

It's not like that for everyone. I don't use porn and I've never used it. It's not about porn for me. It's not even about my partner or sex because I started waxing before I ever had my first boyfriend (and none of my romantic partners ever cared and it wouldn't matter to me if they did care, anyway, because it's my body and I do it for me). For me, I do it because I prefer my prepubescent body, which included no pubic hair. I prefer to wax than to shave because it's quicker and gives a better result that lasts longer.

Fair enough; I think when it's seen as a necessary thing for sexual attractiveness, it ultimately comes from porn though.

I do it because I find the hair troublesome. Wear a bathing suit to the beach? Everyone gets to see your pubes. That time of the month? Big, globs of gunk dry from the time I showered in the morning to the next day and I get to (painfully) yank them out of the hair. Not to mention, it gets between the labia and pokes/itches very sensitive parts. Porns got nothing to do with it.

Though, I don't wax. That just sounds really ouchy.

Women probably suffer more because of, er, the nature of their anatomies. If you don't care about sex, whether or not your genitals look attractive probably isn't on your mind...

Porn plus how much skin we allow (or expect ) to be exposed by good looking people on the beach or wherever. And yeah, women or female bodied people get way more of that pressure.

I read something a while back about how the cliché 1970s bow-chicka-wow-wowwww porn has such thick pubic bushes associated with it that some people today feel self conscious about how little of it they have and they wonder if it's, like, pubic pattern baldness or something. Just like a head of hair, it varies a lot, and people might decide their grooming habits around how it grows.

Maybe I should go back to school and do a graduate thesis on the sociology of pubic hair :D

This thread is making me feel like I'm the only person on earth who doesn't shave bare. I will (obviously) sleep with women who are bald, but I really don't particularly like it. :/

I've used dental dams... the licking latex thing is weird, but not for the reason you'd initially think... it feels different only because it kinda mashes everything a bit. On the receiving end it's surprisingly alright. But no, I'd never choose to use one (dated a girl who was real concerned about std's because we were "open" or whatever).

Nah there's plenty of hairy girls, though more this side of the Atlantic than yours, I suspect. I don't like the bare look either, it's worryingly prepubescent. And a nicely trimmed triangle is... well... nice.

It doesn't feel pleasant and that's why I don't do it that often (unfortunately). It's more of a treat (for me) than anything. Something nice I do for myself when I get the chance. A way to pamper my body, I guess, like painting nails or getting a massage. I'm absolutely okay with pubic hair, however, I much prefer to not have it at all.

It really is. LONG LIVE THE TRIANGLE!

It's also a trillion times less itchy to trim well rather than shave.

Oh, you're not. I used to remove all hair, but that became too much effort and made the pokiness issue worse. So, I only shave parts (sorry, some parts have got to be hairless or it just hurts) and trim the rest.
