FTM, Trans Masc, & Male Centered Folk

Anyone else get mistaken for really really young in terribly rude and patronising ways?? And most of the time when the person doing the patronising is aware I am trans masc.

(Anyone who says those annoying 'you should be flattered' remarks about being patronised has clearly never experienced it.) Grr

Oh I got that when I went to a trans support group. Not in a mean way, but like, "Are you emancipated?". I am like "No, I am an adult." lol

Why would someone ask that anyway... smh.

I'm usually judged by my height (or lack of perhaps). By that same logic all tall folk would be old?! It's so annoying.

Yep... I like the idea but it all takes too long. Even getting care help for my gran is taking too long, it's ridiculous.

I'm considering going private... I've got a year left on the waiting list just for my initial assessment, let alone the other appointment hoops I'll need to jump through just to be referred for top surgery or hormones. Someone I know has been given Feb 2020 as their top surgery date after already being on hormones for however long... I just... It's exasperating. I don't want to be in this country in four years time, let alone still waiting for surgery and I'd need to have the surgery before I can pass and go on hormones... If I go private I can set up a payment plan, then toddle down to London to get a hormone script, change my name etc and that could all easily be achieved this year...

Aw that's awful :(

Well I really recommend Gendercare. Even if they are a little tricky to book the initial appointments with (once you're with them it's fine) and unfortunately the endoc has a 6 month waiting list for private patients now.

Transhealth is shorter wait time, but Dr Curtis is not keen on non binary expression. To put it mildly.

Generally speaking non binary folk have a tougher time being taken seriously by the medical profession and get approved for medical transition. :( so it is across the board. But personally I thought Gendercare treated me the best. (Both doctors also work from Charing Cross GIC via NHS)

The UK FtM blog on tumblr has a lot of other info for private clinics. The prices are about the same in London. I don't know about other locations.

Though Transhealth insist you see one of the gender 'specialist' counsellors at least a couple of times (£70 per session!!) And I thought it was a massive waste of time if youre sure of yourself and what you want.

Gendercare don't make you see a counsellor.

Hope that helps :)

I intend to be able to pass as male, I don't think it really matters how I identify to people in clinics etc, surely? I could identify as a carrot for all they know.

At the absolute least, I need to have top surgery but if I pass fine after that, I might consider giving the hormones a miss... but I'd really like a voice drop...

Is trans health in London too?

Cheers for your post :D

Transhealth is off Oxford Street, all at one clinic.

Gender care are at different locations.

This is why people choose private if they wish to do top surgery first and not hormones/ or wait and see about hormones.

Well my friend (ftm) went to Transhealth for this and got what they wanted. They also said Dr Curtis has narrow minded opinions about non binary folk and non binary presentation. Just be aware of that if you go there.

There's this whole debate about 'playing the game' to get what you want, but that's up to the individual as far as I'm concerned. They want to see that you are sure of what you want.

If you /arent/ then it's better to be honest. Always.

But if you know what you want, my best tip for anywhere is to go in and be as calm as possible. Even if the doc starts on a bit of a lecture about anything, just be calm about it, they have to tell everyone the same thing. I tend to write stuff down now so I remember my key points.

Also, you could say you'd 'be open to discussing the option of hormones' at a later stage. Keeps the option open ended ^_^

I'd still recommend Gendercare. I felt I could be myself there and wasn't judged for it (I'm super femme).

Feel free to PM me if you want more goss on the clinics lol. The UK FtM blog has a lot of first hand experience on it too.
