How common is the black ring?

I found a titanium one but it's expensive. The ceramic one even more.

I'm surprised that the titanium ones are expensive ☹️. Mine was about £12, which is pretty cheap for a ring.

Shipping made it more expensive, and the exchange rate to my currency is also pretty shit. So for me it is a bit costly.

Correct :)

Even though I'm only an effective asexual, as far as non-specialist IRL contexts go I'm ok with IDing myself as a 'type of asexual' - and having such a ring will help my 'coming out' efforts.

Fun times :)

I'm not sure if this idea would suit you, but while reading through this thread I thought that soldering a resistor (or computer chip) to a black ring might be a fun way to add the digi-/robo- aspect. :) Congrats on the ring, though!

Continuing the conversation, I have a black One Ring (from LoTR) to wear, but my right hand really hates to wear rings for long periods. I think I might try picking up a silicone one that others have recommended, see how that goes.

I'm also tempted by this new black GLO ring: https://www.mysecretwoods.com/products/glo-black

Naturally I can't find it now, but yesterday I was amazon shopping for black rings and one of them had photos of the ring on someone's right middle finger! Like, two different pictures, so I don't think it was a coincidence. One of them was all suave caressing a cup of coffee. Heehee.

I might get a silicone one with sparkles in it. I don't wear rings. i am a massage therapist, so it's not very convenient. But I might give it a try.

Silicone is a safe choice for people who might get rings caught in machinery or really just anyone, since the ring will break before it tears your finger off. I'm sorry, but I think of these things.

To a lot of people, it's not about showing others that you are asexual. Most people I've seen say that they wear it to feel a sense of comfort in knowing that there are others like them, even if they don't know any other aces in real life. I personally don't wear a ring, but I would like to for this reason.

I agree with this. I want to get a ring soon, and for the time being, I just wear a rainbow loom anklet with the ace colors on it, and it makes me so much more comfortable with my identity.

I saw someone on the train today with a black ring on their middle finger, though I'm not sure if they were ace or not. Either way it made me feel a little less alone, so if you do wear a ring, I just want to say thank you on behalf of the people who see it and stand a little taller.

One can go too far with coloured stripes, though: for instance, red-green-blue-red-gap-brown would mean you're a 26.7 kOhm resistor with a 1% tolerance.

I do not know how I missed this, but as an EE... thank you for this reference! :)

I first heard about the black ring on here and it made me excited that we have a subtle way of identifying other aces so I got myself one :D

It showed up today and it's just a smidge too big but I love it and can just wear another ring in front of it to keep it from slipping off. I definitely prefer wearing it to my ace flag bracelet just because my anxiety loves making me think I'll get jumped for some reason 🤷‍♀️

I'm gonna be wearing it every day from now on 😊

The last person I dated was asexual and she wore one. She's the only other person I know irl who is ace.

One time at a con I was doing tabletop RPG and saw that the guy sitting next to me was wearing one, but I also don't know for sure that he wasn't cosplaying or wearing it by coincidence as I didn't ask.

I think that when I finish grad school and have time to go be social and date again, I'll probably get a ring and see if that helps things a bit. I'm not inclined to let strangers irl know otherwise, just as I don't really wear rainbow stuff.

i only recently got a black ring because when i heard it was a thing among the ace community i was like "oh shit, a chance to meet other asexual people irl heck yeah!!!"

unfortunately when i got it summer had already started - so i havent had anyone comment on it because i havent been "out and about" much, lol (one of my closest friends noticed it, but i had already told her i was ace and she told me she had wanted to get me one when she found out - i love her a whole lot)

i do have one friend who wears a black band on her right middle finger (not the friend mentioned above, lol) and ever since i found out about the black ring ive been wanting to ask her about it, but i dont want to assume/be rude so 🤷‍♀️

so in conclusion i have one (and potentially a friend who has one), but i havent seen anyone else with one yet and no one has asked me about if it means anything or recognised it

I'd like to wear one if I find it in the store. I want to be open about my sexuality and send signs to other aces cause I dont see another way of finding them in real life.

I found a ring that my mum didn’t want anymore and I painted it black and put clear nail polish on it. Simple black ring. I wear it everyday now.

So I've been wondering how common the black ring on middle finger - symbol of asexuality - actually is? I've personally never seen a person wearing one, though I've only been paying attention/known about the meaning of it for six months or so.

I'm just curious if anyone has ever met a fellow asexual and started to talk to them just because of the ring. Or is it still so unknown symbol and are there still so few asexuals with rings that it is very unlikely to run into someone wearing it.

Also question to people who are wearing the black rings: has anyone (asexual or not) ever recognized it and come to talk to you because of it? If so, what kind of conversations has it evoked?

The idea of finding fellow asexuals through a symbol like that sounds really fascinating to me. I'd like to know if that actually happens. ^_^

In the time I’ve been aware asexuality is a thing, which is a couple of months I haven’t noticed anyone else. But I got my black ring a couple of days ago and refuse to take it off lol. But I do think that it should be more popular kinda like a secret code to other aces would be really cool! ^_^

Ive seen it a couple of times! I didnt say anything, but I saw the ring. Also, I have a ring. I am not out to anyone really yet, so I am not going to go and buy one, but I made one for myself. I just used a black paperclip, molded and trimmed it and boom! Ace ring!

A few companies are starting to make smart rings that are predominantly black (the go-to colour for wearable tech). The Oura has heart rate, temp, and motion sensing for fitness and sleep tracking, the Mclear has NFC for tap-to-pay or unlocking your phone or front door, LZW has one that's a bit of both of those two, and others will probably come on the market. If people start wearing these a lot, and many will chose their right middle finger, then the use of a black ring to symbolize ace will not really work any more. It's already iffy because, as people have pointed out, they've seen someone with a black ring on their middle finger and were still hesitant to ask because it may just be a fashion choice and they're oblivious to its use as an ace symbol. I feel a better, clearer symbol is needed, though i don't have any suggestions. Rings with the actual ace flag colours would be one thought.

I've recently taken to wearing my ring again after quite a while letting it gather dust, and I noticed one of the new people I work with also wears a ring and we've had short chats and the occasional fist bump in passing where our rings clink together.  Haven't really had a chance to talk about it with her because work+entirely different duties/schedules, but I THINK we might be wearing them for the same reason.  At the very least she called us ring buddies the first time we bumped fists.  And I admit I check to see if she's wearing it every time I see her just to see if she wears it by itself or as a fashion thing.

Oh yeahh the black ace ring!! I have been so focused on other things that I just remembered about this. I joined on AVEN in 2018 and so that was when I was reading up on all things ace and I heard about the black ring in the middle finger I think?? Is it still the black ace ring on middle finger or am I wrong? I've totally forgotten...I know I sound silly lol, like how can I forget? Probably a google search will tell me it is the middle finger you silly!! 🤣

Middle finger of your right hand I believe? I'm thinking of making a leather one just for the hell of it. I'm not sure how many people actually wear one though 😄

I wear an ace ring, and I have had one or two people notice it and know what it means. It wasn't much of a conversation. It went something like oh, is that an ace ring? Cool, and we moved on from there. I've also seen several other people wearing them. I'm involved with an LGBTQ+ group, though, so my experiences are maybe not the most representative.

No idea if I already posted on this thread or not 🙃

but outside of the hospital (because of gloves and stuff) I wear my ace ring all the time. I used to wear a dark purple/black one then switched to a simple black ring I got off of Etsy (expensive, but supporting lgbtq+ business and all that jazz)

I wear it for myself, I've become so much happier in identifying as ace so I just want to remind myself of that

I also wear it for others, in case someone out there recognizes its significance I want people to know that we're out there in all aspects of life

a little annihilation

I don't know how common it is, all I know is that I personally have one and I've been wearing it for about it year now. Mine is a cheap silicone one that my grandma ordered for me off of Amazon when I wasn't out to my parents yet.
