In my teens I certainly considered myself 'goth' and made efforts each day to present myself as such - black eye make-up, long, straight dyed-black hair with a centre parting ('emo' had just started to become popular around this time and anything 'emo' was my sworn enemy ) ; I wore big Criminal Damage trousers with corset-tops and crucifixes and penned terrible verse whilst skiving PE.

Nowadays I look more normal - my hair's back to its natural golden brown/blonde, and though I still prefer to wear darker colours and listen to alternative music, I've lost the passionate, Romantic streak that went hand in hand with my teenage goth years. I'd still describe myself as 'gothic' in terms of my attitude, interests and pre-occupations, but I've veered away considerably from sub-culture in the past couple of years. At seventeen it was all about blood, ravens and roses. Now, at twenty five, it's more about how best to get through each day amid the silence.

During high school, I wore black shirts with funny sayings or graphics on them, jeans, combat boots, dragon and skull styled jewelry, and when it got cold, a long duster. My hair was my natural color and I never put it up. Some called me goth, some called me emu to my displeasure (if you've never seen that word, it's basically emo, but the preppy people at my high school tended towards using emu). None of them were correct. I realized I was more of a rivethead, which is a mix of goth and punk aesthetics, but more militaristic in dress style and prone towards industrial music. I still dress as I did back then (sans the duster. I now have an actual trench coat that was owned by my grandfather when he was in the military, though on my small frame, it swallows me whole). I still listen to industrial/EBM music, still wear jewelry that makes moms with young children give shifty eyes, and still read horror stories, but I don't consider myself anywhere near goth. I just see it as me being me.

I don't use the label because I feel like it puts some pressure onto me, but I definitely do find the subculture interesting.

I've seen Voltaire live twice and I actually quite enjoyed it, he is very funny. I also saw a few other bands, as I've been to Whitby Goth Weekend twice.

All my clothes are black, additionally I've got two pairs of black combat boots (1 pair 10 hole and the other 20 - all the way up to my knees), a corset (had two, but one broke :( ) and a nice long coat with a corset lacing at the back. And a black lipstick  I usually dress casual (because I'm lazy) but I do sometimes pull on a skirt.

During the WorldPride in Toronto I gothed up a little (like a corset and stuff), so anyone can confirm that I guess xD

Here is me at the WGW in April 2014:

I think it's absolutely okay and not detestable to be an "emotional" person. I generally dislike labels, so, I wouldn't use "emo" to describe myself or anyone I know, however, I would use "emotional" and "highly sensitive."

I agree.

I generally dislike labels because I want to be whatever I am whatever that happens to be and express myself in whatever ways I feel in any particular moment.

Sometimes I want to wear dark purple lipstick, black lace, and have short black hair (I love wigs!) and sometimes I want to wear hot pink lipstick, my three tiered ruffle pink sequin 80s dress, and lots of glitter makeup. :D

I listen to Goth Music (the Rock section though, I never really liked Industrial /Wave and anything that sounds to "electrical") and when I was younger I felt that I had to dress accordingly to my music taste. Now I just dress the way I want, which is way more comfortable than always worrying about how you look. But when I attend Goth festivals like the Amphi Festival or the Mera Luna I usually wear "goth fashion", because I think it's really pretty and it's a way to express myself, but it's nothing I would care to wear on a daily basis.

I like the goth aesthetic but I wouldn't say I am one. I wear mostly black and dye my hair black (it's naturally dark brown already). I guess I lean towards emo like some others were saying. I like dark stuff, horror, I love Poe... I don't really know enough though.

Yeah, I'm something of a goth. I was the kid in middle school reading Lord Byron during the height of the Emo movement. When Twilight came out, I was reading Anne Rice and listening to Within Temptation. I don't necessarily dress like a goth, at least all the time, but it's an integral part of my identity.

Im DED(Dark Esoteric Death) Goth. Been this way since age 13 and will die this way. I wear a lot of dark colors, I mostly keep it casual but I still try to throw something together every now and then.

Can you explain DED Goth? Googling didn't return anything.

Dark: I am usually attracted to dark aspects of things(dark-humour, magik,fashion/aesthetics etc.)

Esoteric: I am attracted to anything not widely touched upon or not mainstream("Secret" societies, the taboo, ancient cultures).

Death: I have a preoccupation with death, my life pretty much revolves around it.

I put these three things together and bind it to my gothiness to create my own expression of goth and I accent it with sophisticated elegance inspired by romantic, vampire and corporate goth.

The theme is a merger of contradictory things such as conscious hedonism, elite modesty, marcus aurelious and niccolo machiavelli.

Its about living morbidly hyper aware of your impending death and use it as a motivator to do the extraordinary, to strive to live in luxury and to leave a legacy behind. Also about living the life of the dark eccentric billionaire regardless your bank in a shameless way.

So that is the best way I can explain that. I hope I helped you understand my flavor of goth.

I agree. When I said 'emo' I meant it solely in the context of the fashion/music-based subculture that almost wiped out the previous 'goth-fashion' that had dominated the late nineties/early 2000s (at least, in the UK), and not any comment on someone's character. The self-titled 'emos' I went to school with were anything but emotionally sensitive. Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. :)

My girlfriend likes to jokingly refer to me as the pastel goff queen.

Except I'm pretty sure she isn't actually joking. :')

I consider myself a "Goth", although I don't really dress like one. I still prefer dark clothes, but nothing too extreme. I don't think you need to dress like a Goth to be one. I am a Goth because I am a very "dark" person, meaning I like depressing stuff, depressing music, I have a depressive personality and actually find depressing things very fascinating. Also, I am a very sensitive and emotional person.

Pastel Goth is actually more of an insult in my "group of friends" than anything. Like "hipster trash" or "tumblr gurl".

Eh~ I don't believe in making fun of anyone based on their own personal style, so I don't partake in any of that (and my friends definitely know my opinion of name calling like that, hah!)

I personally can't stand the elitist attitude in the goth community.

I have a very Victorian Goth aesthetic, but usually out of both practicality and parental dislike of even small ruffled cuffs or skirts below the knee dress in mild corpgoth-esque clothes. However, I also sew and participate in Victorian dances, so at the moment I'm making an 1898 mourning gown inspired by Mana's outfit in the Beast of Blood PV.

About 10-11 years ago I started to wear black. Long skirts and coats, lace, spikes and quite a lot of make up. It was pretty, but too much work and unpractical for me. I still love goth styles but I tend to be the type who runs in forests and sits in weird positions and hugs dogs. Thus my fancy goth clothes were always on the way or full of dog hair or mud. I was like screw this then. I'm also too lazy to have different clothes for different occasions. I want to be able to just walk out of the door with my current clothes on if something comes up. Have couple of dresses left for some extra fancy occasions though.

Nowadays my style resembles quite a lot of industrial goth I guess. All black, sometimes with small amount of white, purple, gray or pink, and still lots of spikes and collars. Weird hairstyles and boots for kicking grandmas. I no longer use make up or dye my hair since my skin doesn't like make up and my hair doesn't like hair dyes. I'm also not a fan of too tight clothes, but more saggy ones. I guess nowadays my style is a strange mixture of industrial goth and a rapper or something. : D I'm not sure so I answered no.

Wearing black til they invent something darker. And it also needs to be comfortable and practical.

I'm not a goth, but I occasionally (and pretty randomly) dress like one. I did it more back in high school.

Most of my friends growing up were goths, I met a few people who were a part of the local goth crowd when I was playing Vampire: The Masquerade (a roleplaying game) and started meeting their friends and hanging out with them as my main social group for a long time. I was never a goth myself, but always felt very welcome in that group. They were a very inclusive and friendly bunch.

In my late teens I came out to a large group of my goth friends at a pub back when I was first starting to identify as gay. I was a bit nervous about it but when I said it everyone around the table just raised their glasses and toasted me. Awesome crowd of people.

Nope. But I was called goth in middle school. (And of course bullied for it because kids are like that.) In reality, I was into punk. More Sex Pistols than black lipstick. It was just a phase for me. Grew out of it before high school. I don't think I fit a stereotype or follow any particular lifestyle as an adult. I'm just peculiar and kind of nerdy. Shrug.

i don't categorize as Gothic or emo or anything like that, i always try to look professional with a shirt jacket and tie, but inside i am Gothic. i read a lot of dark poetry, love spending long amounts of time alone, constantly think about death and dark matters not in a bad way, and i have cut myself for a long time and am not ashamed of that in any way.
