Because a central interest of AVEN is reaching out to the media to increase visibility of the asexual community, of asexuality as an orientation, I thought it would be appropriate to elicit from the AVEN community at-large how they think outreach should be managed/conducted/achieved, that is, indeed, if it is valued at all. After you vote, I look forward to the views/comments you might have.

P.S. Modified post one hour after submitting it: added alternative four, "No gatekeeping..."

Further clarification: I have been made aware from a previous posting made in regard to this poll that there are different AVEN regulations in relation to the media and research/survey projects (managed by the Project Team). As I am a bit unsure where and how the division applies in regard to the aforementioned, let me state with what I hope is unequivocal clarity, in regard to this poll, I am addressing outside enterprises/projects/surveys that seek involvment of AVEN members (which may also include significant/relevant others not belonging to AVEN) in regard to telling stories for publication/reports/airing, inclusion in a study, etc. It has to do with such entities/personages access in posting their solicitations on an AVEN forum (it seems to me the customary forum for such postings seem to be in AVEN "Announcements") in outreach to AVEN members to elicit participation.

I realize that many asexuals are non-Binary Gender. However I am curious as to the ratio of males and females and why this may be. For the purpose of statistics it is much easier to only use Binary Gender. Please do not respond if you are sexual, and if you are non-Binary Gender, please try to pick one.

I am conducting this because the AVEN survey several years ago only had a sample size of 300. I am hoping that I can get a larger, or at least similar number. I am wondering how many men are asexual because in the AVEN survey, only 29% were men. This is probably due to how sexualized masculine society is, or due to a small sample size.

(This topic came to my mind recently so I wanted to post.)

Do you watch music videos? How do you feel about them (in general)? If you do, why do you watch them? If you don't, why don't you watch them?

When I say music videos, I mean videos with the artist/band in them and actually moving throughout the video, or doing something aside from singing. Not like a video with lyrics on the screen and/or an image. To me, that is a lyric video.

As for the poll, the first two questions are straight forward. Just put the answer that applies the most. The last two questions allow for multiple choices, because I figure that there can be more than one reason why you do or don't. I'm just curious to know how you feel about them and if you watch them,

This is a question that's really been on my mind after coming to terms with some of my own neurological quirks lately. I have several senses that I process abnormally, and one of them I feel has a lot to do with my orientation as an asexual for various reasons that I'm not going to go into here. But something I've been curious to know is what the rate of SPD or SPD-like feelings/experiences/symptoms within asexual people is compared to the general population. (Stats for which are pretty easy to find elsewhere, so please only answer if you're ace- or aro-spectrum.)

For info on what this is and how it may affect certain people, here are some links on the different senses:

I really like cultural diversity, so I decided to throw together an ultra-lengthy poll about cultural background. I'm curious as to how many similarities and/or differences that we have on AVEN.

1.) I was born in Sweden, which is in Europe.

2.) I spoke three languages growing up. My father spoke Portuguese, my mother spoke English, and I lived in Sweden, so everyone else spoke Swedish. I knew a little bit of all three growing up.

3.) I was raised Christian my whole life, but I switched denominations as a teenager. I was originally Seventh-day Adventist, but as I got older, I converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and became Mormon.

4.) I live in the United States at the moment.

5.) I really love living in the United States, especially in California. However, I really miss Europe. I miss Sweden, Portugal, and Denmark. I would love to return to Europe, or even get adventurous and move to a country I've never been to. I'd try living in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, China, or Japan if given the opportunity.

6.) I feel really free and expressive about my asexuality. So far, I've never been condemned for it, but it's probably because I live in California, which is generally a super open-minded state when compared to the rest of the U.S. I do live in the conservative side of California, but even here, nobody has ever said that I needed to fix my asexuality, except for some of my family members. (But they don't count as society to me.)

7.) I'm asexual, but although I feel no sexual attraction, I can develop a deeper relationship with someone regardless of their gender. They can be binary (male or female) or non-binary, and I'd still feel the same things about them, hence why I'm potentially pansexual.

8.) Yeah, there's no way that my gender identity is legally valid in the United States. Here, only male and female are recognized, and if you're transsexual, you can change your gender from male to female or female to male. Non-binary genders don't exist in the constitution yet.

9.) My gender identity is really complicated. I portray myself as androgynous, so I look male and female simultaneously. It's neutral and usually difficult for people to interpret what I am. However, I personally identify as genderless, hence why I maintain a neutral appearance. On top of all that, I'm genderfluid, and if someone says he/she, I just roll with it and adopt mannerisms of the gender they describe me as.

10.) I'm really happy with my cultural background, because I'm open-minded to others as a result of it. I'm constantly learning new languages, new traditions, new customs, new beliefs, etc.

AVEN is wonderful and leaves the fields blank to put what you want, if anything. For this poll, I'm asking what do you choose/put on social sites that ask you for your orientation. By the way, I mean sites that do not acknowledge asexuality. Sites include any and all sites that ask for that kind of information, including dating sites. An example of the first option is someone who indentifies as biromantic, would put bisexual for their orientation on a social site.

I used to put straight since I am heteroromantic, but that doesn't seem right to me, so I have started choosing other as an opinion. I have noticed that some aces (and others on the spectrum) on those sites, just choose who they are romantically attracted to or they just put other, like I do.

What do you put/choose? If you do a mix of these things, please feel free to share what you do from those 5 choices.

I'm wondering how common it is for parents to talk to their kids about sex, and whether it's influenced by nationality or the parent's sexuality. I'm also interested to know whether the degree to which parents talk about sex influences the age at which asexual / grey / demi people realise that they're different.

I'm 26 and asexual. My parents are British, I suspect one of them may be asexual, and they have never talked to me about sex. I think I might have realised I was different at a younger age if my parents had talked more about sex.

To me, high school was kinda plain but it was a nice mix of responsibility and ignorance. There was still a lot of freedom for me then. If I had to pick though, I'd say college life and the years that followed it have been the most enjoyable. I wish I had done more during college, but I'm still reaping the rewards of the experience so I'm content for the most part. The responsibility of being on my own and having a role in society can be troublesome, but I don't think I can go back to those truly ignorant and carefree days.
I believe in the Christian Trinity (God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit), angels, demons, Satan, prophets, and saints (though I don't pray to saints).

I believe in prayer, meditation (depending on the definition), and dream interpretation (to a degree--I don't think EVERY dream has to have a meaning). I also believe there is power in Christian rituals such as Holy Communion, baptism, and hymn singing.

I don't want to start any arguments, just encourage discussion of beliefs.
