Hi everyone,

Thank you for welcoming me to the AVEN community. I'm a contributing writer for a publication called Her Campus magazine (hercampus.com) and I'm currently working on an article about asexuality. I'd like to discuss and dispel some of the rumors about asexuality, so if anyone is interested in talking to me, please feel free to message me or shoot me an email. I also created a poll above that anyone who is comfortable can answer, and I hope that some of you will.

Thanks for your time!

Sex is said to be one of the most important great pleasures in life and therefore we asexuals suffer as we're missing out on it. But that is rather silly, because everybody derives great pleasure from different things. Therefore we discuss our great pleasures as well as a large dosage of the signature randomness you've come to expect in this episode of A Life.

Just a sort of demographic statistic for those who want to take part in it. Sorry about generalizing the age groups and poly relationships so much, but I wanted to keep the amount of choices reasonable, even if a bit imprecise. Anonymous votes are welcome, if you don't feel like telling your story.

I'll keep it short since I don't want to bother you much - I've been in just one relationship in my life, which did end mostly because I was asexual (and because I didn't want kids). I still miss him.

I was curious to the community's input as to whether or not you feel that we need more asexual/asexuality related/oriented podcasts.

A-life is the only currently active asexual podcast that I am aware of as unscrewed and illuminated seems to be quite dead in the water and I am not personally aware of other podcasts that are asexual oriented at the moment.

If you feel that we need more ace podcasts, what reason or reasons do you feel that they are important and what would you like to personally see in an ace podcast?

If you are aware of other ace oriented podcasts other than the ones mentioned, I would also love to be linked to them. Thank you for your time.

Ok, so, I've seen people online referring to a poll where 70 percent of us said we had considered suicide. So, I guess that's pretty high in a population, but everyone was taking that as proof of asexual oppression- because asexuality drives people to suicide. But I know that I'm asexual and I when I wanted to commit suicide it had NOTHING to do with asexuality and everything to do with the fact that my brain was out of whack, and I just don't want to make that kind of assumption about everyone else either. Even though it would seem logical that if there is a high rate of suicide contemplation in a group, to assume that the group's shared traits would significantly factor into that, but.. you know... there's that whole... correlation does not imply causation thing.

So, I'm asking directly!

Note: I am not saying that swankivy is lying, infact I believe her 110% percernt. I just want to see if this is a major problem. Both on-life and real life threats count

Feeling repulsed by your own gender is a theme that seems to come up pretty often in the asexual community. Gender repulsion goes beyond "simple" genital repulsion, since it encompasses other parts of your body as well as the societal norms and expectations placed on you because of your physical sex. This is what the rather small crew of A Life discusses this time around.

Simple poll. I believe there's been lots of these already, but there are no recent polls about wanting children or not, so I thought I'd put one up.

What's your opinion on children? Would you like them or not?

DISCLAIMER: by children I mean both biological and adopted children, so if you want one but not the other, the answer would still be "yes". Also, the "I'm asexual" mentioned in the poll refers to asexuals only, not the whole asexuality spectrum, therefore if you're gray-A or demisexual you should vote "I'm NOT asexual". Thank you!

By "trouble," I mean any sort of trouble besides simple confusion over what you are. I know a lot of us are kind of baffled by our romantic orientations or gender identities, but unless it causes you distress, it's not what I'm asking about here. "I can't tell what my romantic orientation is" isn't what I'm asking about; "I think I might be homoromantic and that scares me" is. I'm curious about are things like other people not accepting you, you not accepting yourself, depression or anxiety over what you are, relationship troubles, erasure, general societal attitudes towards your identity, etc.

This poll is open to:

Anyone on the ace spectrum who is or thinks they probably are homo-, bi-, or pan- romantic.

Anyone on the ace spectrum who is or thinks they probably are trans*, genderqueer, agender, bigender, etc.

Anyone who, at some point, identified as or thought they probably were on the ace spectrum and, at some point, identified as or thought they probably were homo/bi/panromantic or trans*/genderqueer/agender, etc.

Anyone on the ace spectrum who's had a same-gender romantic relationship, or something that looked like it from the outside.

If none of the poll options fit perfectly, that's okay; just pick the one that seems probably closest. If you can't even do that, please let me know what I've overlooked!

I'm doing this because a lot of the sexual LGBT haters floating around out there seem to regard homophobia and transphobia as the only things that cause substantial trouble, while acephobia (for lack of a better term) is regarded as a minor annoyance. I have my own theory about whether or not this is true, but I don't think anyone's ever done any sort of poll about this, and I'm curious how well my theory holds up. Help me shine a little light on this matter?

Edit: I just want to make clear that I'm not trying to play Oppression Olympics or dismiss anyone's experiences. But I am curious if people who've experienced acephobia (will someone please find me a better word?) and homo-, bi-, or transphobia tend to find that the former is small potatoes.
