I'm curious to know. I have seen masturbation mentioned before, and it would appear that some asexuals do and some don't. Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I am curious to see what percentage do and don't.

Yes, occasionally, perhaps an average of once a week. I think the frequency corresponds with my menstrual cycle somehow, but I've never taken the time to figure it out. :)

Agreed, it is basically a sexual act, but it has nothing to do with sexual attraction so I don't think it undermines asexuality in any way.

Yes but like Lauren I think it is somehow tied into my menstral cycle I tend do it more often a couple of days before my period.

At least that's how it seems.

Yes. But it has nothing to do with any known cycle.

Now that you say that, I think that's exactly how it is for me.

You'd think after 4+ years I'd know off-hand!

I do not, but I sometimes have the big (or rather, little) "O" in my sleep when my progesterone is high.

Yes. I know it's difficult to see that it has nothing to do with wanting sex with other people, but ... it doesn't. Ain't I articulate?

Yes, usually about once a week.

The only way in which I can do so, however, is by indulging in a fetish - interfering with my dangly bits and pieces has no effect.

Possible TMI warning...

I have masturbated (and on the rare occasion still do). But not in a "wow, I'm turned on and need to masturbate" kind of way. It's more of a "I'm bored and watching bad television and I've got nothing else to do" sort of thing. I never feel a need to do it. It just kinda happens accidentally when I'm bored-- I'll keep all my clothes on, but somehow belly rubbing becomes absent-minded fondling. I don't have a single sexual thought in my head, and actually thinking about sex (or especially channel surfing and accidentally seeing some!) is the quickest way to stop the whole event. I'm typically thinking about something entirely other than sex, and... well... basically, I guess I'd liken it most to a massage-- my body's nerves enjoy the sensation in its most basic form, and while sometimes I'll have an orgasm, it's not really that different from a foot rub or stroking your lip. It's just an enjoyable sensation, with no real extra special meaning behind it. So more often than not, I'll just give up long before I have an orgasm. I only masturbate once every few months or something, and don't have a drive for it-- it's just like a backrub or something. Sometimes I'll rub my back for a few seconds, but my arm won't like the effort so I'll just stop and not think anything else of it. Same thing with masturbating. I'm not very "goal-oriented" in my masturbatory habits, such as they are. In summary-- it kinda feels good, but so does eating cake. But since I can eat cake with a fork, and not get my fingers all sticky, I'll probably pick cake over masturbating any day.

yes, for 2 reasons:

1) cleans out the tubes

2) boredom

although these days its more 1) (whatever that is), i feel its kinda something that has to be done for some reason (that im not aware of) every so often.

Yes. Almost every day. Doesn't that rule out being asexual? I would have thought so, until I came here.

My arousal or desire to pleasure myself never occurs while I am with someone. And when I am alone and I feel it, I never think of calling someone to come over or go out on a date.

How people get together and perform sexual acts has always been a mystery to me. They appear to need no lessons on how to "do it" or even how to negotiate with someone to agree to "do it". Are we asexuals missing a natural instinct or some piece of genetic programming?

My asexuality is not due to shyness. I know men who are much more shy than me who have a sexual partner. I am not prudish or shy about my body. But I have never been able to become aroused in the presence of another person of either gender. I take care of my body's sexual needs by myself in private.

Yeah, so it turns out my whole lack of arousal down there and all that is pretty abnormal. Go figure right? Those parts can still mechanically do the things that those parts are meant to do, I mean with some effort, but I am thinking that with no expected sensation, it rather defeats the purpose, nu? I am curious as to why it's all ... abnormal and the such, but I have no motivation for seeing any specialist at the moment. For the time being, I guess I don't really care.

So do I masturbate? I guess not. There have been a handful of times where I attempted, but I really don't think it counted, as there was no masturbatory sensation, or whatever people are supposed to get. I mean, because technically masturbation is considered erotic, and I think that if you are touching yourself and it's not erotic it really doesn't count. It's like, if a gyno is touching and prodding at you it is not masturbation. It's the exact same thing for me. Weird, huh? I just figure I should probably learn what's what down there and all. As knowing oneself has always been a rather important goal.

I don't recall voting, but I would have if I'd seen the thread, and I'd voted "yes"

Even if I don't like doing it (because I see it more as an obligation, read on), it does seem to stop some things from standing up at regular intervals, if ya know what I'm on about.

Yes, I do and rather often. I think it is more common with men though, most girls I know don't mastebate regularly if at all.

Yeah, even if I'm doing nothing at work I will randomly get "aroused" theres no girls or anything, I'm not thinking anything dirty... But if I regularly masturbate then that sort of thing never happens.

Also, I hear that guys have a heightened risk of prostate cancer if they don't regularly masturbate.

I am asexual, I am totally uninterested in having sex, so, in order to prevent certain instincts from kickin' in even though I don't want them to, it's sometimes necessary to do that every so often. Also, it helps put me to sleep if I can't sleep!

EDIT - I feel that it's one of those things that you can only understand if you are one of the people doing it (How can you be asexual and masturbate?!)

I do, and frequently. But it seems sort of pointless because I don't experience arousal at any point of the process, either before or during. And as for the end - I get more pleasure from a back-rub. I guess it is force-of-habit, or boredom... or maybe a (failed) attempt to combat lonliness that I deny I experience... or perhaps an attempt to try to get a glimpse a little of what it is sexuals feel.

For the most part I related to the post by Prophetess.
