The Asexual Community

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Adam. Hopefully nobody will find this offensive in anyway--I'm just trying to learn. For one of my courses we're studying online communities and I've studied sex and sexuality for three years now without ever coming upon any information about asexuality. I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn.

I don't know a lot about asexuality besides the basics, although I've started reading some of the threads here to see what there is to know. The reason I'm making this post rather than doing a silent study is because I want to talk to some people here (asexual or not asexual) to understand the reasons for joining this community (besides the obvious). I'm wondering about the benefits of the community, how it might compare to an asexual community in real life (I don't know if such a thing exists, but would like to). I'm interested in how relationships are formed, if power dynamics exist, how people talk here, what the experiences are like in this community (asexuality.org, aven), how this community can mesh with reality, what the drawbacks of the community are, how the community is a part of daily life/routine, etc. Really, I'd just like to talk to people and get to know experiences and stories. Any conversation would really be an asset and I love listening to new stories and ideas so if you're willing to talk, please post a reply or something. You can also reach me at this_is@quon.net or iioru on AOL instant messenger.

Again, I hope my inqueries don't offend anyone. I'm just trying to educate myself (and hopefully others upon completion of the project) :).

Thank you!!

- Adam

Anything specific we could easily answer in this thread?

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

4) What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

5) What is dating like?

6) What do you talk about most on these boards?

7) Do you have one or more pets?

8) What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

11) What are you politics?

12) How would you describe your living space?

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

If you would rather talk privately, let me know by e-mail (posted above).

Thank you :)

0) What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

m/21/Canadian (Ancestry is just about everything)

1) What brought you to this community?

Found out about asexuality from a webcomic. First thing I did was research it (-:þ

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

Hangout and sounding board

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

Very much friends online with these wonderful folks. Have yet to meet any of them IRL, but who knows....

4) What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

Right now I'm in a relationship with a sexual male, he knows I'm A, and he's letting me find my comfort levels.... so we're still figuring out where we stand.

5) What is dating like?

Wierd. Very wierd. Right now, I'm with another male, so we tend to be fairly subdued in public. My past relationships with girls (I'm bi-a) I didn't feel right cuz I wasn't thinking about sex, so it felt akward. I feel better now that I understand WHY I never thought about sex (and still dont).

Trying to explain that I don't "check people out"

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

Never watch TV (dvds and movies sometimes, but not TV). Not quite vegetarian, but I eat very little meat.

11) What are you politics?

Vaguely liberal. If you want more detail than that, it takes a good two pages (-:þ

12) How would you describe your living space?

Cluttered and disorganised, but relatively clean.

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

Cant answer that question all that well... asexuality is an abcence of thought, so.....

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

Ummm, I have a friend who drags me out to see movies now and again, so I see about 80% of my movies at a theater with him or at his house. Genres, I like scifi and comedy. And scifi comedies.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

Here (-:þ

It's a nice play to just relax and discuss things with likeminded people who you can become friendly with.

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

I'd like to think AVEN is friendly. I don't know many speciifc people nor have I met any in RL...yet.

No relationships of a romantic kind.

5) What is dating like?

7) Do you have one or more pets?

8 ) What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

You want me to narrow it down?! I think there are a lot of things in this communtiy that might be considered wierd but I like it that way.

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

Having all my friends say how gorgeous a guy is and really not getting it all. Doesn't sound wierd but it was.

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

I guess I've always seen myself as unique, apart from everyone else. Always been in Science-Fiction so I guess that played it's aprt....

11) What are you politics?

Liberal.

12) How would you describe your living space?

A room in my parent's house. A messy room I might add.....

0) What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

20 year old hispanic male, Mechanical Engineering major

1) What brought you to this community?

An article in New Scientist

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

Mostly it's just nice to come to a community where every third sentence isn't turned into a silly inuendo, not to mention the people here are awesome

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

The term friend is difficult to apply over the internet. I enjoy talking with the people here, but I am not sure that I would label anyone that I haven't met "friend." As for real life, I have not actually met anyone who is out as asexual, though there are people who I have suspicions about. They are moreso just buddies than friends.

4) What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

I assume this question means romantic relationships. I have never had one of these, nor do I desire to. Also, as for friendships and such, I am not sure how these would differ as I have never been a sexual.

5) What is dating like?

Never dated, probably never will

6) What do you talk about most on these boards?

Lots of things. I tend to prefer the Just for Fun and Off-A boards, but I post on most of them

7) Do you have one or more pets?

At home I have two cats

What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

This question

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

The reactions people give when they "check out a hot girl," I glance over, then immediately go back to what I was doing.

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

Nothing besides my general geekyness.

11) What are you politics?

slightly left on most issues.

12) How would you describe your living space?

Typical college dorm room, less messy and with anime posters instead of naked women posters

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

Generally my life and such isn't too affected by my asexuality. Aside from the lack of dating and sex, my life is probably about the same as anybodies.

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

At home, and I'm usually a fan of the sci-fi or action/suspence type movies.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

I generally don't burden the world with my emotional affairs. There's probably more of my emotion around this forum then anywhere else, and that is not a lot.

0) What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

18 year old English female.

1) What brought you to this community?

An article in New Scientist

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

It is helping me work through issues about my life, and finding out why I am different. It also has some cool people, and it is nice to have a place where people will listen and offer advice.

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

Not yet, but I have only been a member for a little while.

4) What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

I have been in one romantic relationship, and it didn't work well. it was before I realised I was asexual, so I felt very uncomfortable about sexual things that are expected of someone in a relatioship, even things like kissing, and ended up seriously disliking my boyfriend for making me do these things i hated.

5) What is dating like?

Only dated once, see above. I liked the talking abd being close, just not any of the physical side, and I had a very sexual boyfriend, which was a mistake!

6) What do you talk about most on these boards?

AT the moment, I am mainly in the asexual information sections, reading and sometimes posting, but I will investigate the other sections more once I know a little more about asexuality :-)

7) Do you have one or more pets?

At home I have a cat

What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

People saying things I always thought and never thought anyone else would think!

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

I don't know.

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

I am a christian, i am liberal and I think a lot, i read too much, and talk a lot, I am slightly geeky, and intelligent, and dont sleep much :-)

11) What are you politics?

left wing

12) How would you describe your living space?

Very tidy room in uni, posters on the wall, mainly of animals, especially cats, and a couple of pictures from LOTR or the Matrix.

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

At the moment I am not sure. It doesnt affect me much though, except I dont get crushes on famous people and don't want a boyfriend, but I am gradually finding different areas that it affects.

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

At home, beause it is cheaper. I like sci fi, fantasy, comedy, anime (although I havent seen that many yet) and some others. My favourite films include Lord fo the Rings, Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spirited Away and the Phantom of the Opera.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

My best friend at Uni gets most of my emotional outbursts, and I sometimes write things down on random scraps of paper or in my diary if I remember.

What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

Female (transgender)/fifteen/reluctantly Christian, average Caucasian, nothing too exciting.

What brought you to this community?

Wikipedia. Gotta love that thing.

How does the community play a role in your life?

It's a place to hang out, really, talk about what I am. I'm pretty new here, still, but all the people I've met so far are very intelligent and caring and I just like seeing what they have to say.

Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

Nope. I'm not so good with the IRL meetups.

What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

I have precious little experience with either sexual or asexual relationships, but I was in a sexual one until just a little while ago. Not very sexual, though - the most we ever did was kiss. I think our relationship now that I've 'come out' is basically the same as it was, just without the kissing or quite as many physical PDAs.

What is dating like?

If it's with someone you really like, it's fun, except I was always a little nervous over the idea of kissing (it's really no fun at all). Some of my dates with aforesaid boyfriend were slightly dampened because I was scared he was going to try.

What do you talk about most on these boards?

Me personally? Um... I've posted in a lot of threads. No real overall trends.

Do you have one or more pets?

Two cats. They're such nuisances, but I love them anyway.

What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

Like Absi said, the way everyone talks about stuff I've always thought about. I read some posts and think, 'that's exactly like me!'. I still find it a bit crazy that there are actually people who are like me out there.

What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

Probably the fact that discovering I was transgendered pan-asexual lead to the very serious idea to cut my hair, bind my chest, and go androgynous, just to see what it would be like. I still think I'm going to do it, if I can get my parent's support.

What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

Umm, I listen to Marilyn Manson. I'm a freak, I am.

What are you politics?

I could never understand it. I think I'm pretty liberal, seeing as I believe in generally letting people do whatever the hell they want, so long as it doesn't harm other (unconsenting) people.

How would you describe your living space?

Messy. Very, very messy.

How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

Not much of a one, really, although I'll admit I haven't know I was for very long. It's really just another part of what I am. I keep sort of expecting to be different now that I have An Orientation, but I'm just the same as I always was, I just have a name for part of it now.

Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

I see very few movies. I only go to theaters occasionally, so I'd have to say I see the most in my own home. I'm partial to anime, Japanese stuff in general (so long as it isn't fake-Japanese Kill-Bill we-made-this-movie-so-we-could-cut-stuff-up Japanese), and some types of silly but tame action movies (Constantine was pretty good, because it had an interesting plot and we got to watch Keaneau Reeves run around - I liked the first Matrix movie for very similar reasons). I won't deny the occasional chick flick sometimes - really I just watch what I feel like.

Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

Myself, really. I'm not so good at confiding in outside sources. But out of all my possible external sources I think my sister is my favorite.

0) What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

16/F from Canada. Parents were never married, and had a rather turbulant relationship. My father is an acoholic/drug addict, and my mother is emotionally unavailable. However I always feel very loved in my home.

1) What brought you to this community?

I was browsing around LJ one day, and I typed 'asexuality' into the search engine for some reason. I found the asexuality community, which have a link to AVEN. I read through the stuff, and cried when I realized how much of it was me.

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

It reminds me I am not alone/ a freak/ that there are others out there. These are people who can see my world through similar eyes when everyone else is scratching their heads.

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

Online, a few. I haven't met anyone is real lifew though.

4) What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

I haven't been in any romantic relationships.

5) What is dating like?

N/A

6) What do you talk about most on these boards?

Probably about how no one understand my asexuality in real life :D

7) Do you have one or more pets?

Yes. I have two cats, a dog, a rabbit and a fish aquarium.

8) What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

That random picture of a walking penis. I'm still not sure what it was supposed to be for.

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

Probably simply when word gets around and kids come up to me and go 'Is it true you're asexual?'

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

I'm a quasi-vegetarian (I eat fish) and I'm a Pagan.

11) What are your politics?

I'm a conservative liberal.

12) How would you describe your living space?

Messy.

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

FAirly large, to fairly small depending on the day. It dependsa if I continually see relationships/sex being depicted all around me, or what.

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

Probably at other peoples houses. I love mystery/psychological thrillers, hate chick flicks.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

Probably my sponsor from Alanon.

0) What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

Female, 22, white, American (southern California native).

1) What brought you to this community?

I was trying to find others like me, or any information at all on my orientation -- I've always known I wasn't attracted to men or women, and this was before asexuality was popping up on CNN and the like.

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

It's nice to have a space where no one will disbelieve me (or worse, think I'm a child molester or something) for saying I'm asexual. Primarily, though, right now, I come to read the forums dedicated to visibility and outside mentions of asexuality.

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

None. No real desire, either -- of the posters that I've seen here, I either don't want to be friends with them in real life, or haven't read enough of their posts to make a judgment on that.

4) What relationships have you been in and how are they different from and similar to a relationship without the asexual factor involved?

I'm really not the best person to answer this. Once upon a time, I had a 'Net boyfriend. I never even had a crush on him, and was only with him for emotional support. He wanted cybersex a lot, and got really pissy when I didn't. It wasn't even enough for me to cyber with him for his sake -- no, I had to enjoy it, too, and he refused to have it if I didn't want it. I've wandered off topic for the question, but I'll add that the moral of the story was that I shouldn't ever get involved with someone that both demands sex and demands that I be into it.

5) What is dating like?

I've never dated.

6) What do you talk about most on these boards?

Well, I'm a contrary bitch, so mostly I come in when I want to pick apart someone's arguments and/or facts. ;)

More seriously (not that the above isn't largely true), I'm interested in visibility issues, and also the definition of "asexual," though I've left the latter topic alone for a while.

7) Do you have one or more pets?

I have a dog! She's really cute.

8) What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

Hrm. I don't know.

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

Eh, I don't know if I've had any asexuality-related experiences in real life that I'd classify as "weird." Unpleasant or uncomfortable, yes. Weird? Not really. There have been no sitcom-esque wacky hijinks.

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

I'm gonna go with unique morals. Among other things, I place a very high value on curiosity and the search for truth, I don't see anything inherently wrong with being greedy, I think material things are good, I'm not entirely sure infants have a right to live, and I believe people have an absolute right to self defense, no matter the cost.

11) What are you politics?

Radical right-libertarian.

12) How would you describe your living space?

Erm, messy? Disappointing. There's a big gap between my fantasy living environment and the one I actually have, though it's not as big as it could be.

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

It's a pretty major part of my life. It's been -- and at time, still is -- a major source of pain for me, too.

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

At home; I catch them on cable. My favorites? Um, Heavenly Creatures and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, and probably some others I'm forgetting. I like movies that are character based and driven, but which still have interesting settings. Audition's pretty good, too, for the ick factor.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

My own thoughts, I guess. I spend a lot of time thinking through things (probably too much time), but writing them down or telling people isn't an enormous help.

I don't do romance.

8 ) What's the weirdest thing you've seen in this community?

Hmmmm.....

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

Lots, probably. My friends are always telling me I'm crazy.

11) What are you politics?

For the mostpart I'm fairly liberal (with a small l if you please  )

12) How would you describe your living space?

A mess right now. I'm moving back to my parents' next week and trying to pack up 4 years' worth of crap in my university house.

13) How big of a role does asexuality play in your life?

I don't really know. I don't know what it's like not to be asexual.

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

At friends' houses probably. I like action and comedy or weird arty films, depending how thoughtful I'm feeling.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

I have a journal. It's mostly about books and movies and Chemsitry though. :D

9) What's the weirdest asexual-related experience you've had in real life?

Part I: When I was 20 or so, I posed a hypothetical question in a casual conversation with a woman who had been my square-dancing partner for two years. I did not realize until the next time I saw her, when she politely returned everything I had ever given her and declined, that she thought I had proposed to her.

Part II: Two years latter, more or less, after I had moved to a different state, I had the opportunity to return the favor when she tracked me down and came to visit long enough to ask if the offer was still open.

0) What is your gender/age/background/etc.?

female/22/2nd generation Danish-American

1) What brought you to this community?

I've been living with my boyfriend for almost two years, and we've never had sex. I've tried, because I love him and want him to be happy, but I just can't do it. Then I read an article about asexuality, and one night I was very depressed and found this website.

2) How does the community play a role in your life?

It's comforting to see that there are other people like me, and I can hear advice from people who have been aware of their asexuality much longer than I have.

3) Are you friends with many or any people from this community online and/or in real life?

No, but I'm pretty new here.

7) Do you have one or more pets?

My boyfriend, who I live with, has a dog, and I refer to him as my dog too, even though he's not really mine...

10) What other parts of your life set you aside from "the norm" (i.e.: vegetarianism/veganism, anti-television, unique morals, etc.)?

I'm not exactly a vegetarian, but I don't really like meat. I eat a little poultry and fish, but would just as soon (or sooner) eat soy. I don't watch TV, but I do have a large DVD collection. I can also turn my thumb backwards and make my shoulders pop loudly out of their sockets.

11) What are your politics?

Liberal.

12) How would you describe your living space?

I rent a small house with my boyfriend.

14) Where do you see the majority of your movies? What are your favorites and favorite genres?

I usually buy or rent DVDs, but if I have the time and money, I'll go to a local indie theater. My top three movies are Amelie, Lost in Translation, and About a Boy. I like movies that make me think or laugh, or both.

15) Lastly, what is your most trusted emotional outlet (here, journal, therapist, friends, family, etc.)?

My little sister. Wise beyond her years. :)

Adam, just a couple of questions:

1. How do you intend to use the information ?

2. If it will form basis for an article of some sort - will You feed back somehow ?

Thanks for answering.

Hi vikingo,

I'm working on what I guess could be described as a "digital ethnography", so I'm trying to gain a sense of the community, it's purpose, it's reason for existing, and the people who are a part of it. I'm looking specifically at AVEN, but thinking of the AVEN as a single instance of a digital community that would find difficulty existing in reality due to the small membership and scattered locations of its members. In raw form, this study will be a packet of information that will be an amalgamation of my research here and through literature. Ultimately, however, it'll be a piece of online media (that's one of the project's requirements). By feed back, do you mean will I be sharing it here? If there's an interest, I'd be more than happy to share it once it's done.
