Asexy Friendly Movies!

2001: A Space Odyssey would seem to fit the bill.

BLARGH

Excuse me. I just threw up a little.

I just fail to see why that movie is any good. I understand at the time it was WOW-EE and film students might love the hell out of it, but to me it's just a boring movie...

I guess people bore differently. I think it's a great movie, though I'll admit I probably have something of a 'film student' taste. 8)

But back to asexy movies, can we give an honourable mention to ones which fail miserably whenever they attempt to be sexy? I'd like to nominate Manos: The Hands of Fate. It is a rather bad and *BORING* movie, except for the bits which are inadvertently funny...

I can think of a lot of movies like that...

I really like Ever After with Drew Berrymore. I realized the other day while watching it that it is one of the few romance movies with adults that doesn't go too raunchy. I think there are only three kiss scenes in the whole thing and the rest is "no touchy." The Kiera Knightly Pride and Prejudice is also good that way! Only one kiss I think. I don't have to endure ten minutes of rubbing or soft-core porn with these two like with other love movies.

There are also a lot of "coming of age" movies that are pretty ace, but those usually are meant for a younger audience. I still like some of them though, like A Dog of Flanders (1999).

Would Blade Runner count? It does have a couple sexual elements but there not really that important. Its main theme is all to do with asking questions about what makes us human. Only watch the directors cut though, stay away from the theatrical version at all costs.

A lot of M Night Shyamalan's films would seem fit into that catagory, I'm thinking of The Sixth Sence, Signs, The Village (even though that one was prity bad). I think he's more concerned with atmosphre messing with peoples heads.

The Last Airbender will probably be an aversion. From interviews and clips, it looks like he made the relationship between the two main characters even worse than what it was in the first season of the cartoon. I think he even said that one of the protagonists challenges was "coping with the feelings for his friend". <_<

If you like animated movies, try Miyazaki's movies. He doesn't like romance in his movies, although Princess Mononoke was an aversion. Spirited Away is probably the best animated movie. (yes, it beats Disney movies.)

Just thought that I would drop my two cents in...

I found Sherlock Holmes (2009) rather good. Holmes was apparently hinted to be Asexual despite his interactions with Watson :P. (asexy/hetero-life-partners?)

And er... Hot Fuzz.....

Oh and another RDJ flick, The Singing Detective, although it is strange and twisty and just plain bizarre and he goes through most of the movie detesting sex, due to past trauma, so, yeah. There is sex in there, as flash backs...and thingees... ok, never mind then.

Doom, Sunshine, Hitchikers Guide... from memory were afriendly...

Doom, Sunshine

What a weird coincidence. I just watched both those movies the other night, Sunshine for the second time (I love that movie). I highly recommend Sunshine but Doom was kind of, eh. I think it could've stayed a little closer to the game.

Lord of the Rings

-there's romance, but it's not the main focus. And it's well done, in my opinion. It's always refreshing to see a movie where the characters don't automatically hop into bed with each other.

The Dark Crystal

I'm seconding The Village :)

Can't think of any aromantic-friendly movies at the moment.

The Fall

very, very ace friendly

and even aromanitc friendly

Oh, yes! You should definitely see The Fall. The production values alone!

I'm not into sci-fi or fantasy (except for Harry Potter), but there are lots of great asexy-friendly movies out there. Here are some of my favorites, and there's a range of time periods and genres in there: All the President's Men, Amelie, Angels & Demons, Arsenic and Old Lace, Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, A Christmas Story, Coraline, Earth (the Disney Nature documentary), Fantasia, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Fiddler on the Roof, Field of Dreams, Finding Nemo, Frequency, The Goonies, High Noon, In Bruges (violent, but not much sex if I remember it right), the Indiana Jones movies, Into the Wild, A League of Their Own, Life is Beautiful, Little Miss Sunshine, Mad Hot Ballroom, March of the Penguins, Matchstick Men, anything with the Muppets, Paper Moon (sex is talked about a little, but still funny!), The Pianist, Remember the Titans, Saving Private Ryan, Seabiscuit, The Sea Inside, Shattered Glass, The Sixth Sense, Slumdog Millionaire, The Sting, Super Size Me, Sweet Land, To Kill a Mockingbird, Up, Vertigo, and While You Were Sleeping

(I know people already suggested some of these, but I ranked all of these high on IMDb. Easy to just take them out of my voting history!)

Ink (2009)

Oh my GOD. So good. Also aromantic friendly (unless you have something against father-daughter, familial love).

EVERYONE SHOULD SEE IT.

I think the only romance movie that I really enjoy watching (besides anything in black and white) is Kate and Leopold. There's never any sex and when they kiss (only happens a few times), they pan away from it. It's like they're giving the characters some privacy which, if you do want a little romance, but not ALL of it, is really refreshing. XD

Also, I don't think I read Labyrinth anywhere. It's one of my favorite movies. Gotta love Bowie! XD

Pan's Labyrinth is lovely.

I've found that movies that I can watch with my parents and not get embarrassed by are usually pretty asexy friendly. Truth be told, I always secretly wished there was a website that would grade movies on things like, "Can I watch this with my Grandmother?" XD

Wouldn't that be awesome?

The Princess Bride is really good.

There's a couple kissy-kissy scenes, but otherwise, it's mostly about pirates.

Anyone remembers the French director and actor Jacques Tati? He made some great movies from the 1940s to the 1960s, including "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot", "Mon Oncle" and "Playtime". The humor was more in the tradition of silent movies (Chaplin and Keaton) but the movies also had great subtle qualities and poetic images. The main character of the non-conformistic Monsieur Hulot (played by Tati himself) certainly was asexual. There was usually a female partner for Hulot but the woman appeared often as some sort of kindred spirit, maybe most apparent with the character of Barbara in "Playtime". I can strongly recommend all of his movies but beware of heavily shortened versions.
