Asexual Artists

Recommended Posts

I was showing a friend my sketchpad recently and we got into a major talk about our preferences of gender when it came to drawing. Despite being straight, she finds the female form to be a better image to capture noting how everything flows. I argued back the larger curves in the female for are just as disrupting as a male's more angular build. I also told her that ignoring the pelvic area, the male form is just more fun to draw. Especially the shoulders. I'm sorry, but chicks get cheated in that area.

Anyone else really biased? Apparently its funny that an asexual artist would care.

It may just be because I'm a woman, but I find the female body is easier to draw. Assuming it was just as easy to draw men, I would probably opt for women anyway because I prefer the overall shape. I'll gladly write male characters as mains in a book, but for drawing I prefer women.

I'm an asexual artist! :D

I got a BFA in graphic design, and now I'm oil painting for fun. (I'm back in college BTW to get a BS in computer info systems because graphic design is too competitive for me.) I do realistic landscapes though. I was SO GLAD I didn't have to take life drawing for my degree. I am repulsed by nakedness, I always was since I was very little. lol

In a drawing class we did do a lot of realistic charcoal self-portraits. Or portraits of another member in class. I got so sick of that because I'm not very good at drawing people. I liked doing the still life's MUCH better. But all we did was faces.

As far as bodies go, I really don't even notice in everyday life. It's not something that crosses my mind. If I do see a really muscular girl though (like Jillian on The Biggest Loser) I always think, "geez I want to look like that". The irony is I am much more muscular looking that the average girl (I take adult gymnastics) but not quite like Jillian! lol

I do notice the beauty of the human form in dance, figure skating, gymnastics etc. The long thin lean look does usually look better on a girl. Big boobs I think look terrible cause they ruin the lines. This is one reason why big boobs are not appreciated in these arts/sports, besides the fact they slow down rotation in figure skating and gymnastics. Even the thin guys look much better as figure skaters. Gymnastics is different because the guys don't do much "artistic" dance stuff. It's mostly strength.

Anyway that's about the extent I ever notice the human body. Out in the real world I never really pay attention to people's bodies, that is unless they purposely wear something that is trying to call attention. But I'm more like, geez, cover up! lol Or if someone comments on how they have to loose weight then I will pay attention.

Well I rambled on long enough! I hope that answers your question. lol :D

I know there are many others asexuals here that enjoy drawing the human form.

I can't draw very well, but when I do have a go it's usually women - I just like the body shape better and and what you can do with clothing.

I'm also an asexual artist! :D

Females are more easy to draw and I've never had a problem drawing them and if i needed reference I just had to remember how I look like. I prefer men because it's more challenging since they don't have completely obvious curves.

Females are more enjoyable to draw since there is more fashion available besides T-shirts and jeans (but i still draw guys in dresses  ). More colourful too if i wanted to colour it in.

I enjoy drawing males a lot more than females. In fact I almost never draw women... <_< I think I find them more interesting, and I like how they look more. :) Maybe it's just because I'm attracted to males and kind of wish I was one. XP

I enjoy drawing the male body most. When I was younger though I prefered to draw the women and didn't draw my first male until I was about sixteen.

I prefer males now because of my obsession with Yaoi. ^^;

(Though I am drawing a female right now because I wanted to draw a deviantart ID for myself)

I also have a subconscious preference for females. If I sit down and start doodling, I will ALWAYS draw a female unless I make a conscious effort to draw a male. I have no idea why that is.

in my cartoon style most of my characters look very similar gender-wise. and i mean for it to be that way.

i guess i prefer drawing men, i don't like "curves" that much.

Artist as well - but this doesn't really apply - I draw psychedelic abstract...although human form has come up in my art, usually male-ish? Hard to describe.

i mostly draw horses, but when drawing a rider i almost always draw a woman. i just think they are nicer to draw and i am aestetically attracted to females so i look at them more. honestly, i never tried drawing men until we did the human drawing unit in art class and all my female friends were drawing men and thought i was strange for drawing beautiful women with great detail of the face and body... i was a bit embarassed to say that i have never really looked at men before to draw them and didn't know how to draw them  ... overall horses are my obession in drawing. they are the most beautiful creatures :)

I'm better at drawing women (because I agree, to me they're easier to draw), so I prefer to draw males, just to get better at it (mainly male anatomy).

It depends on my mood. Usually I feel like drawing when I'm thinking of a story so depending on the story going through my head, whoever is apart of the story gets drawn. Lately it's been both females and males on the same page, but it's still difficult to draw two people interacting so that's why it's usually only one person per drawing.

Asexual artist here. Plan to go to NYC to get a major in cartooning/ illustration. I actually spend most of my time drawing females. When I try to draw males, they look like drag queens. D:

I do draw men more, but only because most of my characters are men. I used to draw women more because I also find them easier (you can disguise bad torsos with boobs X3). If intend to draw an entire body it usually ends up female. If I only draw a head then it's often male.

As a Gray-A male artist, I prefer drawing male characters.

My art style is...unique. A kind of fusion between more comic manga styles and the Saturday morning cartoon from my youth. I find men to be a lot easier to draw than women. I'd love ot be able to draw good-looking women, but most of them turn out overly exaggerated or too androgynous, so I stick with men for the time being. XD

I think doodle slightly more women (with a high percentage of ballerinas), but it's pretty much a three way split between men, women, and children. Everyone looks pretty much androgynous though.

Women have better fashions, their hair is more fun, and I like hips, but boobs are really hard for me.

After beginning a serious study of anatomy, I enjoy drawing males more. Their body fat content is notably less than a woman's so it is easier to understand the complications and implications of muscles folding and tucking into one another underneath the skin. Once understanding that, it's easier to notice that a man's body flows and curves just as much as the female's.

Wow you drew that one above? Cool! 8) Even though it's a woman, you got the muscles down! It looks pretty realistic. I have such a hard time drawing people. I like the realistic landscapes, oil painting.

Here is one that I did recently....my best one! It's painted from a picture I took in the Smokey Mts years ago. I believe it was called Cates Cove.

I find both forms equally attractive when it comes to aesthetics. Female forms are easier for me to draw due to the far deeper understanding I have of them. Everyone who says go become an expert in anatomy, I've already been there and done that. Part of my deeper understanding of a female body comes from my "touch masturbation" when I give myself the heavy petting.

I don't see any nude men unless I look at porn. And it's not like I can "touchy feely" a nude man to get the same kind of deeper understanding. Which would be in my case what it would take.

So oogling porn or studying more anatomy will not help.

I would also like to experiment more with drawing androgynous people. Since some of my chars are intersexed and given this is what I'd ideally like to be, it's odd that I haven't drawn this way much.

What confuses me here is how do you understand anatomy whilst you are masturbating??

Asexy artists, yay! I draw ridiculously effeminate male figures most of the time (I blame anime). But I barely have any female characters to begin with, so...I dunno. *shrug* Girls bore me, but so do manry-men. Guess girly-guys are my "type"? xD

(might as well mention that I don't do awfully anatomically correct drawings, at least not when I doodle, which is about 70% of my art these days...BUT when I do more realistic drawings, I much prefer to draw women...easier for me to grasp anatomically)

I used to really enjoy drawing women (I absolutely love drawing curves) but I've started to draw a lot more men so now I draw both genders equally. However, I never draw "manly" men. For some reason, people having a lot of muscle disturbs me, and men just tend to be more muscular. The men I draw are usually boyish, slim, with some slightly feminine features.

Hmm, anatomy?...No I don't use myself for anatomy study. In order to study anatomy, I need to be looking, not feeling.

The concept would be the same whether it was a plant, object or animal.

This is about a deeper understanding of form. I can't really explain it much better.

PS: I thought masturbating was actually doing something sexual.

I'm still learning the basics so I don't count my self as an artist yet, but OnT I like drawing males in my cartoons.

I always draw males but not nessicarily men. I'm still mostly a kid, and I've been making up comics and characters for a long time and subconciously they are always males and around my age. Kid superheros for the win!

I'm an asexy artist!

I do prefer to draw men because the musculature is more pronounced and more fun to draw.

Also, I don't really mind drawing the ...more private parts of the anatomy, it doesn't embarrass me. It's just non-pr0nnish art, isn't it? Nothing to be ashamed of there.
