Well I don't much like anime, but I did enjoy Neon Genesis, Akira, Air and Cowboy Bebop.

Others I've enjoyed: Last Exile, Place Promised in Our Early Days, Hellsing

Read or Die and then ROD - TV. I cannot stress how amazing those two shows are. Go and watch it. Read or Die is only three episodes long and at twenty minutes each it's shorter than the average film. Read or Dream is a brilliant sequel and though I haven't finished it yet I'm pondering whether or not to say it's greater than the first one.

I do not watch anime much but I did love Paranoia Agent (Parapika isn't wholly that great - the book is much better) though I disagree with Akira.

Why isn't the original Digimon on your list? You cannot beat a classic. I would also say 'yes' to watching all of the Sailor Moon series. Much better in original Japanese.

I've seen some of the anime on your list - here are some of them:

-Howls Moving Castle, Laputa - Castle in the Sky, Mononoke - I'm not sure if you had more Miyazaki films on your list, but I've seen most of them & love all the ones I've seen.

-Haibane Renmei - this one was good. A little strange, but I think it was really interesting.

-Kinos Journey -the Beautiful World - I really liked this one. Kind of quiet (not an action-packed show, although there is some action), kind of surreal.

-Irresponsible Captain Tylor - I love love love this show. One of my all-time favorites. Highly recommended!

-Last Exile - I watched this very recently, & it was pretty awesome.

-S-CRY-ed - this is a fun show - I was more into it than I expected I would be.

If you like the Ergo Proxy and Darker Than Black post-apocolyptic-anime genre then I would definitely recommend Ghost in the Shell, both the original film and what I have seen of the Stand Alone Complex series. Similar sort of level (but not on your list) Gilgamesh is quite possibly one of my favourite animes ever - it's philosophical and somewhat depressing but I love it all the same!

Also, you have xxxHolic on your list, but I'm surprised you haven't got Tsubasa ReservOIR Chronicle - the two animes (and moreso the manga) tie in to each other so much! (Tsubasa is the story of Syaoran and Sakura (and Faye and Kurogane and Mokona) which I think is referenced a fair bit in xxxHolic...)

I would try and think of more but I really ought to do some work right now...!

I highly recommend Boogiepop Phantom. It's an intelligent anime told in a non-linear fashion, through the eyes of many different characters. It makes you have to think and piece everything together as you watch it. At some point soonish I plan on watching through it again.

Also, though it's not easy to find, Revolutionary Girl Utena was pretty amazing. Sadly, I never got to finish it, though.

Serial Experiments Lain is mostly pretty great, although I think it starts to completely fall apart towards the end.

Hetalia is a good anime if you aren't offended by shows making a joke of stereotypes people make and a hinting of gay. It's more of a comedy than anything to take seriously.

Kuroshitsuji is a fantastic anime. I thorougly enjoyed it.

Monster is pretty interesting, also. I didn't get too far though because Hetalia hooked me and I watched all the episodes of that instead xD;

I'd recommend Trigun. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember liking it quite a bit.

Also as far as Inuyasha goes, I liked the plot quite a bit, but after a little bit....it was the same thing over and over and over again. So if you watch it, watch like the first 15 episodes or so.

People who are into Japanese stuff need to reevaluate their position, then, because most old school anime is a complete head-trip.

FLCL is about sex, growing up, and alienation from society. It's a pretty classic Gainax title. It's trippy, but it does make sense.

I DEFINITELY second the Monster recommendation. Also, Utena - it's pretty trippy, but it's definitely good. Princess Tutu is also good - it's Utena done with both more crack and more comprehensibility.... and ballet. If you want a good shonen show that has fighting but likable characters and interesting plot, I'd recommend Yu Yu Hakusho (ESPECIALLY the last two arcs!). Lastly, Gankutsuou is excellent, and if you liked the magnificent bastardry in Death Note, I think you'll really enjoy it.

I'm recommending Haibane Renmei. It is probably my favorite anime of all time.

Yu Yu Hakusho is probably the last great shonen I watched. I'm not a huge fan of the Soul Eater anime. The manga is great, but at some point the anime completely abandoned its source material.

Unless you have strong feelings about the Count of Monte Cristo, and then you might not. I was upset about the plot deviation at the end.

Gurren Lagann and Yu Yu Hakasho are hilarious and shenanigansy. Soul Eater is good, my friends and I are working on that now. I also recommend the Miyuzaki movies if you havent seen them (forgive me if I spelled that wrong). Ive done some animating and I can actually admire his work (unlike most anime that just looks "Flashy").

I watched no more than 10 minutes of bucano before I turned it off. Something about the way it was made me cringe. Possibly the voice acting i think (yes, I was watching with subtitles). This is a big problem with watching tv type things for me. I watch even less english/american stuff than i do japanese.

Quite a few of the ones you liked, I like too. Cowboy BeBop is awesome and I love Naruto.

So, based on your tastes I would suggest these two, both are not overly long series:

Wolf's Rain: a more serious sci-fi/fantasy anime with good art from Vietnam. The Vietnamese version with subtitles was better than dubbed.

"It focuses on the journey of four lone wolves who cross paths while following the scent of the Lunar Flowers. They form a pack and decide to seek out the Flower Maiden in order to open the way to Paradise. Along the way, they must avoid a fanatical wolf hunter and the nobles who wish to use the Flower Maiden to create their own Paradise." (It's a little cooler than this description. The "wolves" are sentient and can appear as humans by tricking the minds of people. They do not actually change into human form.)

Trigun: It has a lot of the Naruto silly humor while still kicking butt.

"Known for its Space Western theme, Trigun is about a man named "Vash the Stampede" and the two Bernardelli Insurance Society employees who follow him around in order to minimize the damages inevitably caused by his appearance. Most of the damage attributed to Vash is actually caused by bounty hunters in pursuit of the "60,000,000,000$$" (sixty billion "double dollars") bounty on Vash's head for the destruction of the city of July. However, he cannot remember the incident clearly due to his amnesia. Throughout his travels, Vash tries to save lives using non-lethal force. He is occasionally joined by a priest, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, who, like Vash, is a superb gunfighter with a mysterious past."

Just wanted to third the Kinos Journey -the Beautiful World- idea. One of the few shows with an asexual/aromantic character in it.

Sayonara Zetsoubou Sensei is also pretty good. Very,very funny.

And if you like Kinos Journey then Spice and Wolf is along similar lines, kinda.

I did say it was trippy! And you will have to suspend your disbelief and accept that in this version of reality, robots can come out of people's heads, guitars can defend the earth from meteors, because it's all metaphor. The story itself is quite simple. Also, I grant that there were a lot of otaku in-jokes and cultural references. It would probably make more sense later in one's anime career than earlier.

If you don't like that, I doubt you'll like Excel Saga, either, which takes a similar approach to realism in anime (which is to say, there isn't any).

Millenium Actress. (It's a movie.)

Wolf's Rain starts strong but fizzles out at the end. The music remains fantastic throughout.

In agreement with so many others, Kino's is fantastic. So is Sayonara Zetsubo-sensei, and I can't believe I forgot to mention them.

Haruhi is also good. The first season is Haruhi no yuutsu. I heard there's a second season, but I haven't seen it.

Monogatari is less known, I think, but worth checking out.

It's a bit old, now, but The Irresistible Captain Tyler was one of my first favorites.

I personally enjoyed "A Cheeky Angel." It's a short anime of 50 episodes and comes as a manga too. Kinda runs along the genderbender side of things, but it is overall cute and funny. It also exposes some of the gender stereotypes of society if you need to watch it from an analytical sort of view. Might seem weird and slow at first, but the plot really starts to pick up about half way through, whereas the first half is mostly building up the characters so you get a good idea who they are and what they are like. You at least have to watch until the Mongol joke comes up, that made me laugh for about a good five to ten minutes. You'll probably fall in love with Genzo's character, he was my favorite, as are most comic-relief-type characters.

Night Head Genesis: if you enjoyed Ergo Proxy due to the psychological aspect then this is a good anime to watch!

Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex: See comment above

Wolf's rain: quite a bit of blood shed at the last episode but apart from that it's great.

Vampire Knight (series 2 is called Vampire knight Guilty): I found it ok, just the usual "friendly" vampire story but not as extremely childish as twilight! (but does have an unusal twist at the end of series 2)

Witch Hunter Robin: If ou enjoy watching Night head genesis then this is on a resonably similar line.

07-ghost: Usual story on how friendship will out. But still a really good series.

Howls Moving Castle: A reasonable good movie

Kiddy Grade: Reasonable ok, see N.B. at the bottom of this post

The ones I would not recommend are:

Bleach: if you didn't enjoy blood+ due to it's violence then bleach won't be much better!

Peach Girl: Unless you like watching the usual teenage romance story lines tha have no depth to them then this isn't the best thing to watch.

N.B. You've listed Kiddy Girl as a possiblity, as far as I'm aware, kiddy grade isn't out yet but the first series of it is known as Kiddy Grade.

Plus Gakuen Alice has a different name for it's dubbed version; Alice Academy - just incase you prefer dub over sub. Though from what you've said I don't think this will be the best one ever.
