theflyingclubcup Posted March 29, 2009 Share Posted March 29, 2009 Intersexuality is a gender that is rare in real life and far rarer in fiction, even though it has lots of dramatic potential. Have you read, watched, or heard of any works that use intersexuality or have an intersexual character? One I know of is I.S. (Intersexuality). It's pretty much a typical shoujo manga, but it's more about being accepted as an intersexal than romance. Some of the intersexual characters are asexual. Link to post Share on other sites
Kelly Posted March 29, 2009 Share Posted March 29, 2009 Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is a fictional story where the main character (Cal) is IS (5-alpha reductase deficiency syndrome). I read it when it was released and recommend it as both a good book and for the story. Cal ends up making hir own mind up as to what gender role ze will be, rather than be pushed into a box by other people. A recent movie, XXY, is also about an intersex (Klinefelter's syndrome) person growing up. It has great reviews. I have not seen it yet. Link to post Share on other sites

Like the Enterprise episode Cogenitor, where the crew encounters a race with 3 sexes. Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness", the inhabitants of Gethen are kind of intersexed - they're mostly neuter except for certain periods when any of them can become either male or female in order to reproduce. A recent movie, XXY, is also about an intersex (Klinefelter's syndrome) person growing up. It has great reviews. I have not seen it yet. I saw XXY at one of the LGBT film festivals here last year - it was good. As well as showing some of the violence and stigma faced by intersex people it also illustrated the difficulties in the decision to operate or not. Link to post Share on other sites

(And when the books were new, she got emails at least once a week asking her to tell what it was. Sad to say, people still aren't comfortable with non-binary gender). Shrine Maiden Posted April 13, 2009 Share Posted April 13, 2009 If I got the concept right, there is another manga "After School Nightmare" who features a main character who is both boy and girl and shows him/her trying to decide between the two sexes. It's got more going for the psychological side rather than the smut that comes to mind when reading a plot like this so I think it's worth checking out. Link to post Share on other sites

It's set in a alternate future where half of humanity has chosen to genetically re-engineer themseves so they're intersex. It's a really good novel and I'd recommend it. -Films. -American director Lisset Barcellos directed a film called 'Both' back in 2005, -but I've never seen it. It's a rather sexually charged memoir of a queer girl with congenital adrenal hyperplasia who doesn't quite fit the intersex definition with her physical appearance. Link to post Share on other sites
