Good Dick

Yeah, I know the title isn't the most encouraging thing.

I'm judging this without ever seeing the film, so I may be completely off, but from the trailer alone, I suspect there are some asexual undertones to the upcoming film Good Dick. Without seeing the full thing it's hard to judge the exact nature, but from what I can see, I think that the lead female character could possibly be asexual.

Whether or not this is deliberate, I don't know. The film seems to follow your typical quirky romance in structure, and there may well be an undertone of something in her past making her the way she is. On the plus side, the trailer seems to include a bunch of scenes with her shutting the guy down anytime he approaches her sexually (even when they are in bed together), and elements of the dialog suggest to me that she just isn't interested in sex and/or is a virgin.

As I said, I may be way off as it's pretty difficult to judge these things from two minutes of clips. It's the kind of film I'll see anyway, asexual characters or not, so I'll find out in more detail then.

Trailer can be found here.

Interesting... it definitely has potential and the possibility of being an asexy flick.

I'll have to keep this one on my list to see. Thanks for posting!

I went on the website and read a bit about what the writer of the film had to say, and it seems to be more about the woman re-finding her sexuality after a past event through a different take on a relationship than what movies normally portray.

With GOOD DICK, I wanted to show what love can do to someone’s life, and how love and sex can open a closed person. I wanted to reintroduce the wonder of sexuality; the titillation of not seeing everything, the romance of a film about real people whose sexiness abounds because of their authenticity. These days sexuality has somehow become associated with all things false, and I think it’s a mirage. Characters are attractive to me when they are real people.

Who knows though. It'll be interesting to see. It looks like a good movie to see regardless.

The wonder of sexuality --- opening up a "closed person."

Sounds like a load of BS to me.

Perhaps, perhaps not.

Hadn't read the site, so that does kind of go against what I originally saw in the trailer. Can't say I'm bothered by the idea of "opening up a closed person" through sexuality. If it's right for the person in question, it's of no concern to me.

As I said before, I'm not overly concerned one way or the other as it's the kind of film I'd see anyway. If it has any asexual elements, that's great, but if not, it won't make much difference to me.

I'm also interested to see whether the writer lives up to her statement of the movie being more of a breakdown of the masculine/feminine stereotypes that happen in movies. I mean, it still seems to fall back on the belief system that the man comes to cure the woman of her issues and then they make love and everything is better, but the writer seems to allude to the fact that this isn't about "masculine strength" and "status" but more about some sort of equality in the relationship. It'll be interesting to see whether or not she does indeed do that. But then she states that "definitions of masculinity tend to be deformed in our culture", which is where the character of the male role comes in to play. There is no proper "form" of what "masculinity" is. By saying that anything that doesn't portray the hegemonic ideal is "deformed" seems to undermine what she might have been trying to achieve. If I do end up finding a way to see this, the feminist critic in me is going to go wild. :P

Of course. Thank you for representing the posters of AVEN.

Had I realised that most of the people on this board would be so woefully ignorant so as to judge something based on it's title alone, I of course would never have posted and thus risked offending your delicate world view.

I do think this will be a good film, not necessarily due to any supposed asexual link, but because it really doesn't look like it's enforcing stereotypes typically seen in mainstream movies. Stella, thanks for the quote and for the background. If anything, I think that has only piqued my interest in seeing this movie.

And, Shadow girl, please try not to make flash judgements like that... Judging the title without watching the trailer or seeing the movie defeats the purpose of having a discussion about it.

^_^ Thanks for posting this, I really liked the trailer. I'll look to see if the film is playing in theatres nearby, that's once my computer is back to normal and I can google it. <_<

I quite agree, it does look like a good film to watch. Now that I read the quote, I'd really like to see the film. If not in theatres, I can always purchase it once it's out on DVD. ^_^

You probably won't be able to I'm afraid. It expanded last weekend to a grand total of two screens in the entire US.

Which is infinitely more than it'll get over here I suppose.

Hmm, that's alright, I'll just have to wait for it to come out on DVD then.

That was more of an opinion then a judgment. I'm just saying that's how it could be proceived in the minds eye.

The name of the film is tacky, no doubt. It's not even a play on words, it's just what it sounds like. But, from what I've seen and read it looks like a great movie. I plan on seeing it.

It's the posts like this that make me wonder why we bother.

These are our peers? Christ.

It's weird eh?

I think the clue is in the chosen screenname. He certainly isn't my peer.

I'm really bad at going to see films but I like to know about interesting ones in case they eventually turn up on tv at a time when I'm able to view them. Sounds interesting, slightly off-beat films usually are.

Nalle Neversure

I'd like to see the film. Didn't watch the trailer yet, but based on the posts in here it sounds good. Whether it has asexual undertone it in or not. Oh, and I wanna see where the name actually comes from before commenting on it. ;)

Might need some work as I'm in Finland. Anyone wanna tell me if they find it somewhere online? :P

By the looks of the summary, I suspect that anyone who watches the film looking for an asexual story is going to be disappointed:

Not quite the sexploitation film its’ title might suggest, it is an unexpected love story following a young man on his pursuit of a lonely, troubled woman set in present day Los Angeles.

(P.S. Fellow grammar-fiends, let's all try to refrain from pulling out the red pen)

There also seems to be some hinting in the trailer that something happened to the girl to make her uninterested, rather than it being a natural thing.

It certainly looks like a good film, though. I'd be interested in seeing it.

Aww, do we have to? I was going to get a wee badge made up saying "I judge you (and your film) when you use poor grammar" and everything! :(

Okay, so I've just been watching this. Granted while working at 3 in the morning, so perhaps not the ideal time.

Personally, I rather enjoyed it. I'm still in two minds about the asexual undertones I took from the trailer. The trailer is largely accurate. Boy likes girl, girl has "quirks", girl seems to like being around boy but has no interest in having sex with him.

That said, there is a specific reason that led to the girl not wanting sex that may negate any talk of asexuality. But then there seem to be people on this board who call themselves asexual in similar situations, so who knows?

There are sexual references through the film, with things like porn being discussed in a fair amount of detail, so maybe not ideal if you object to that sort of thing. That said, no actual sex is had during the film, even between the main characters.

So yeah, I sort of liked it. Would need to watch it again to formulate anything more thoughtful though.
