Ace characters without labels

Even though the term "asexual" isn't used, I think we've all seen the occasional "oddball" character that's clearly ace. The one I've noticed recently is on a retro TV show from the late 50s/early 60s (Dobie Gillis), the character being Maynard G. Krebbs. Some of the things he says about relationships are textbook aro-ace! Cracks me up. Unfortunately, this character is also childish and naïve (typical of society, to stereotype like that!). However, he's definitely the most original, distinct and beloved character in the show. What other unlabeled ace characters have you guys noticed in TV film or books?

I don't know if I undestertand what do you mean with label, I think Chalie Wesley is a great caracter and he is ace aro. J.K.Rowling never confirm his sexuality but she said that he doesn't have a girlfriend and he is not gay.

I've always seen Yami Yugi (or Atem) in Yugioh as an ace character. I can't fully say if he appears that way in the manga because I've yet to finish it but in the show he always seemed that way to me. Yugi CLEARLY has a crush on Tea (or Anzu, whichever) but Atem never really seems to show that kind of love for anyone. (In my opinion anyway. I know there are many who would probably argue otherwise... Though personally I don't see it.)

Merida from Brave seems ace and possibly aro, as does Moana from...well Moana.

I kinda think Ruby from RWBY might also be ace, cause I don't recall her ever showing an interest in dating or anything of the sort.

Sasuke from Naruto is a asexual caracter that almost  no one notice. I don't think he is aromantic because of his fellings for Naruto and I think his relationship with Sakura is unhealthy.

Light Yagami from DeathNote really seemed a bit like that to me on several scenes.

Apart from that, I sometimes got that impression from Abed Nadir from the show Community. I think he's one of the only characters in the show who didn't really "do anything".

Not watched it for ages but thinking back to it now Gill Grissom from CSI was probably grey-ace.

Hannibal Lecter probably. Although he mentions sex and sexuality it always seems to be as a tool of manipulation and control more than anything else.

Sheldon cooper from big bang I can't remember ever showing interest in anyone but don't know if that changed as the show went on.

Didn't think it would be this hard to think of some😯

Lukas from the game Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia seems to be ace. Low affect, averse to gossip about romance/sex, and shows little interest in either gender. Even though he courted a woman, he states he feels no particular longing to see her again. In a conversation, he wonders if he’s lost some instinct that everyone else seems to have. Some other people on forums have even noted as such.

Like Sylvastor stated, Light Yagami (from the original Death Note) seems to be ace as well. Early on, he fakes looking at porn to cover up why he locks his room, and during his inner monologue he disdainfully states it’s boring. He views relationships as tools to manipulate people, and his “love interest” Misa is just another pawn in his game. He’ll do stuff for her, but it’s mainly to get her to help him with his plans. And, as much as some fans want to ship him with L or just call him gay, IMO Light’s god complex really doesn’t leave room for anyone to be his equal; he doesn’t view anyone as being a potential partner.

The problem is that even if these characters can be interpreted as ace, so many people (*cough*yaoi fangirls/boys*cough*) immediately conclude they’re gay (esp. in the anime community). Since it’s not well known, people just assume that a character is straight by default, and gay if they don’t seem interested in the opposite sex.

@kvothe yes, that's what I meant, clearly (or seemingly) ace characters that authors or writers haven't explicitly labeled "asexual". 👍 Someone else mentioned Sheldon, another good example.  😊

Varys from GoT. Prince Oberyn asks him if he liked boys before he became and enuch which he denied then said "What if I told you I never liked girls either. I've seen what desire has done to this realm and I don't want any part of it."

I agree, Light Yagami is absolutely ace. And I think L probably is as well. He never even talks about sex or romance. He never seems turned on by that scene where Misa is basically in bondage. And he loves cake.

I never really thought of Ruby as being ace but it makes sense actually...though there are a few scenes in RWBY Chibi that might suggest otherwise.

Clariel from the Abhorsen series said that she wasn't interested in sex.

I always thought of Patchouli from the Touhou series as being ace, just because she likes books more than people.

I know a lot of people think Sherlock is ace. I don't know enough about him to judge, though.

The novel I'm writing has a bunch of ace characters.

I like to think that Sin from CW's Arrow is ace, and if you've seen her on the show I'm pretty sure most of you will get where I get it from?

Also Sin was amazing and needs to come back to the show.

I've never seen Dobie Gillis but now I want to.  :)

I definitely think book Sherlock Holmes is aro ace.  They didn't use those words back then, but Doyle made a point of contrasting Watson's romantic life with Holmes's contented lack thereof, and over 60 stories (roughly age 27 to 60), Holmes never shows romantic interest in anyone.

Bertie Wooster, from the 90s TV  series "Jeeves and Wooster," might be ace.  He always has a crush, but seems terrified of getting married.

I like to believe that Terra from Final Fantasy VI is aro ace. Multiple times throughout the game, she asks other characters about love and expresses confusion that she has never felt love for anyone.

I was rereading Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King (a favourite book of mine) and I can't believe I never caught this before - King Roland is absolutely asexual!!! It says he was never interested in sex even though he really, really loved his wife, and that the only reason he had sex was to please her because he loved her so much.

The best part is it said that in Delain (the fictional country of this book) nobody found it weird that a man didn't want sex.

Somehow I think that Esme Weatherwax in Discworld (Terry Pratchett) is ace and aro, but I'm not sure if she's really ace/aro or if she just thinks that celibacy is a better way to live her life.

I'm quite sure that Carrot is ace (or at least demi).

I guess I was wrong.

Spoiler

I knew that he had a thing for Angua, but somehow I missed Pterry's hints that the relationship was sexual.

As anyone ever considered Daryl from The Walking Dead as Asexual? I thought about it a while ago but wasn’t sure. I mean, Daryl has been on the show since the beginning and is one of the only characters that hasn’t been romantically paired up or hasn’t even been shown interest in romance. They also haven’t show him concerned about sexual intercourse!! He as other worries on his mind while everyone else is getting romantically gushy or getting banged durinf a zombie apocalypse!

And for any superhero lovers (especially if you love DC and Batman) then I believe Damian Wayne (Batmans blood son and the fourth robin) is MAJORLY Aro Ace with probably even some aversion. His personality is always disgusted with sex, he finds it pointless, and continuosly overlooks romantic situations. I worry that writers will later try to throw in some romantic interest to ruin things, because they always must, but he appears aro ace.

also why does it seem like you finally find a character that is resonably asexual and/or aromantic and then they have to put in a love interest and change the characters whole personality and ideals?

I totally agree with you on this one. At some point some rumors were going around that Daryl would turn out to be gay, vut I haven't seen anything of that kind. We also never got any backstory on who he was before the apocalypse. It could be that he is just a 'flat' character because the tv show added him to the original characters (as in: he wasn't in the comics while the others were).

btw: Do other species count?

If they do, I would count Ruth from Anne McCaffery's Dragon Riders of Pern series.  His response when asked about mating flights (dragon sex) was basically "Well sure I could, but why would I want to?" and I have never related to a single line of text as much as I do that.

Egon Spengler from Ghostbusters seems to be aro ace. He doesn't return Janine's advances in the first film and seems more interested in his molds, spores and fungus.

Malcom Tucker from The Thick Of It seems to be ace as well. He never married and seems not to have any sexual or romantic interests and is more focused on his job.

Henry Perkins from A Very British Coup TV series seems to joke that he gets his sexual gratification from "Changing the country" so he might be a possible heteromanic asexual. He did have a brief affair with another woman that was "brief" and "sweet" possibly a demisexual.

The main characterse of the two anime and manga series “The disatrous life of Saiki K.“ And “Haven‘t you heard? I‘m Sakamoto“

seem asexual and aromantic, especially Saiki who avoids romantic encouters at any cost. The only thing he really seems to love are sweets.

Another one I've thought of recently is Jez from Chris Wooding's Tales of the Ketty Jay. Probably aro ace, but demon-related issues may be part of it.

I saw an interview with one of The Walking Dead producers.  In answering a question about Darryl being in a romantic relationship with Carol he said that Darryl was conceived from the beginning as an asexual being.  He is a character not in the original graphic novel so they wanted to create something different.
