Jillian Scheer from Boston College has contacted AVEN about the following research project on "Trauma-Informed Care for Sexual and Gender Minority Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence":

Intimate partner violence (IPV) occurs in LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) relationships at equal or even higher rates as cisgender heterosexual relationships. One study found that 61.1% of bisexual women, 43.8% of lesbians, 37.3% of bisexual men, and 26.0% of gay men reported experiencing rape, physical violence or stalking by a partner compared to 35.0% of heterosexual women and 29.0% of heterosexual men. Another study found that 50% of transgenderidentified participants reported being physically or sexually assaulted by an intimate partner. Health consequences of IPV are also well documented (e.g., sexual issues, physical injuries, depression and substance abuse). As such, research on intervention approaches aimed at improving health for LGBTQ IPV survivors are critical.

The purpose of this study is to better understand the experiences and health of LGBTQ individuals as well as the quality of services received by the LGBTQ community. If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete the following online survey containing demographic questions, questions about a range of hurtful behaviors that you may have experienced in romantic/intimate relationships, attitudes toward services you may have received, and your mental health and physical health. You are helping to make a difference by adding to our understanding of the quality of services received by the LGBTQ community. Such information will help to make programs designed to support LGBTQ people the best they can be.

Participants will be given the opportunity to enter a raffle for one of 15 $10, 10 $20, or 3 $50 online gift cards.

The study will be conducted through this online survey. The survey should take you approximately 30 minutes to complete.

You are invited to participate in this project if you:

1) identify as LGBTQ

2) are at least 18 years of age

3) have ever experienced some form of intimate partner abuse

4) sought services related to intimate partner abuse and its aftermath within the past year.

In order to qualify for this study, you must satisfy all four criteria.

This research request has been approved by the Research Approval Board for advertising on AVEN.

This asks for "LBTGQ" but not A. Where is the "A?"

The "A" usually means allies, not asexuals. This research, as seen by the OP, is centered on partnered LBTGQ relationships, not asexuals.

The "A" usually means allies, not asexuals. This research, as seen by the OP, is centered on partnered LBTGQ relationships, not asexuals.

I think we need to take into consideration that many asexual people are in lesbian, gay, or queer relationships if they fall for the same gender, or they are trans* or non-binary, or their partner(s) is trans* or non-binary. Furthermore, many (but not all) asexual people identify as queer even when cisgender and heteroromantic, as they consider asexuality part of the LGBTQ spectrum. It might be that the researcher themselves considers asexuality as part of the LGBTQ spectrum (though the debate within the community has been going on since forever). Therefore, the research participation request is not necessarily excluding asexual people.
