Lord of the nerds
I know that AVEN exists to educate the world on asexuality. However, what will happen when asexuality becomes something everyone knows about and everyone understands. I know that, the way things are, that seems like wishful thinking, but it will happen eventually. So my question is, what will happen to AVEN when this occurs? Will it become just aplace for asexuals to talk without the problem of educating the masses or what?
Snao Cone
a) It's already a social environment beyond merely visibility & education b) The world is never going to run out of people who aren't aware of asexuality
Lord of the nerds
a) It's already a social environment beyond merely visibility & education b) The world is never going to run out of people who aren't aware of asexuality I understand that it is already a social environment, but after most people know about asexuality, it might become purely that. There probably will be, in the distant future, a time when 99% of people know what asexuality is, just like homosexuality now being globally known.
Snao Cone
I don't really see what the core of your concern is. People knowing that there's an orientation called "asexuality" doesn't mean that they understand what it is. There will always be misinformation spread around about things like this - just as there is with homosexuality now. There is still a very strong need for awareness and education, and there always will be. Even if all of society becomes aware and accepting of asexuality, as young people grow up and need help figuring themselves out, a site like AVEN can still serve as a go-to place to get information. Tanwen
Even asexuals can't agree what an asexual is.
Homer
From my POV, there is no such "thing that everyone understands". Ever. Even if asexuality were well-known and understood by the vast majority of people, AVEN wouldn't become obsolete. The concept of cars is well known. Still, there are countless places to inform and educate yourself or to talk about them. I can't really grasp where your thought is leading. Let's just assume that everyone will be well-educated about asexuality and all the countless sub labels in, say, 10 years. Which consequences would you draw? Would AVEN be redundant? Even if it were redundant in ten years' time, would there be any consequences for now? Hmmm...
Guest
Aven will always be needed because there will always be people who are not aware of theyre asexuality or are looking for answers or like-minded people to interact with, people need a place like Aven to meet like-minded people, raise awareness, learn and to educate others about asexuality. nanogretchen4
There will never be a time when there is not a need for an asexual community. Even if everyone in the world were an expert on asexuality, and even if we lived in a utopia free from bigotry and discrimination, asexuals would still be sexually incompatible with the great majority of the general population. Asexuals who want to date and have relationships, especially monogamous relationships, will always need to find each other.
Robin L
Lots of people know about homosexuality, but that doesn't stop LGBT communities from existing.
