Ovulation and Sex Drive

Hello humans!

*creeps silently into the gray area forum* :P

So I've been noticing that a lot of people talk about masturbation and the desire for sex while on their period? Like that... they masturbate to relieve menstrual pain? Or like... while they're on their period in general, sex becomes part of the desired agenda? This struck me as odd because not only in pop culture do people seem to suggest that in sexual relationships, sex comes to a complete halt while the woman involved is on her period but also because if I were ever up for sex or even masturbation it seems like my period would be the time where I'd want those things the least because there's blood everywhere and everything sucks? Not only that but when my friend's roommate left a bloody condom in the bathroom one time she reacted along the lines of "who in the right mind would have sex while on their period?" So I was just a bit shocked that it seems like most women feel the opposite of what people on TV suggest.

As far as I can tell, I'm asexual and it also seems like either I don't have a libido or I'm not able to recognize when the libido is happening (is a libido even something that happens? XD). Masturbation is something that never crossed my mind and since the idea of myself in a situation even remotely sexual (I consider masturbation to be sexual in nature), it's not something that I think I'll ever try. Maybe it's because of my lack of experience that I'm unable to comprehend the benefits of masturbation/intercourse especially as it relates to ovulation?

Just wondering if anyone could chime in about this.

Yes, it's possible to relieve menstrual pain a bit with masturbation or sex, sometimes. Not for everyone though. I guess that it must produce some endorphins or something like that. I'm not quite sure about it. However sex also produces oxytocin, which amplifies uterine contractions, which are often the source of period pain, so I'm wondering if sex might actually increase period pain in some cases...

But it seems like you're thinking that ovulation occurs during periods ? Because the 1st day of the cycle is the first day of periods, and ovulation happens on the 14th day on average, in the middle of the cycle. It's a reason why some couples may decide to have sex during periods, so there is no risk of pregnancy.

It does? @____@

That's.... new information....

How do you even know if you're ovulating?

I don't masturbate that often, maybe a few times a month, but often it is correlated with hormones. I only menstrate every other month because I'm on the pill, but I do find that I masturbate more before or during when my period is or should have been, and after it is done I have no lidibo (can't make myself get hot n bothered even if I want to). I use a DivaCup so there is no bloodiness to worry about.

You can take your temperature to know. Temperature graphs can give a pretty accurate ovulation time. There are apps that can help for this and also guess when you're fertile or not.

There are other ways, but somewhat more invasive or a bit TMI.

How do you even know if you're ovulating?

The most accurate way is taking an ovulation test, which works similarly to a pregnancy test. Some people have physical symptoms around ovulation, such as ovulation pain. Most people don't know when they ovulate, and it takes a lot of effort to learn to track it.

I can generally tell when I'm ovulating because I often get cramps or at least a brief pinch of cramp-like pain and there is a change in discharge (i.e. more than the rest of the time). My libido also tends to spike around that time.

By definition, I'm pretty sure you couldn't not realize you had a libido. Honestly, I'm not sure what I libido is, but I know my arousal decreases when I have my period, which one of the only good things about it. I also notice I release less vaginal discharge right after my period, which makes me more comfortable. I'm right on the tail end of my period right now(it was really light this month compared to usual, which I'm glad about) Saying you're "unable to comprehend the benefits of masturbation/intercourse especially as it relates to ovulation" sounds nonsensical to me. People masturbate and have sex because it comes naturally to them, not because they can comprehend the benefits of it. It would be like if someone who didn't get tired and suffered no ill effects wondered if they just couldn't comprehend the benefits of sleep.

fyi guys, you can still get pregnant if you have sex while on your period.

also during the heavy days of my period i cant feel sexual at all but when the flow is extremely light and my period is over i can feel sexual. i also usually have a good time feeling sexual right before my period. i like to think that during the fertile days before and during ovulation i'm more sexual but that is only sometimes the case. being fertile can actually help with lubrication which can help with sexual relations or masturbation. in my experience the cramps are so bad that just thinking about moving, let alone any form of sex or masturbation, is sickening and makes them worse.

One of the only ways I know that time of the month is coming is because my libido suddenly appears. Maybe my body is sending signals to reproduce even though I can't and don't want to. Biology is weird.

Some people experience arousal when their periods about to start. Which may or may not make them want to have sex/masturbate. Personally masturbating on my period would probably maybe just make me sleepy/relaxed which isn't a bad thing at all. You don't have to do any of these things if you don't want to, just do whatever makes you feel better, whatever that is for you. Take care

... well, I wasn't aware that masturbating on one's period was a thing either. Well, to each their own.

As for myself, I rarely masturbate, and when I do the goal is never for an orgasm but for some sensation. I've never been anywhere near an orgasm and I'm unsure if I would ever want to be. Even if I did, there's now way I would do it on my period. Heck, I think just about any trace of a very low libido dissipates during that time.

The majority of my libido is made up of fluctuating hormones around that time of month. Yes, the blood is gross... But the desire for relief is usually stronger. It's like mosquito bites, you know you shouldn't scratch them but if they're bad enough you do it anyway.

I went into early menopause but I remember being horny before and sometimes during my period. However I never had a guy who wanted to have sex when I was on my period.

I get so... um, itchy around that time and surprisingly it was sooo much less messy than I had expected. I've heard that it can end your period faster or make it hurt less. I can definitely confirm the latter as it's like drinking a fast-acting pain medication because of the endorphins released.

Hello. I am new here and think that I may be demisexual. This topic intrigued me though because although I am not usually interested in having sex with my long-term partner, I have discovered that if I do, I can be sure that my period is only a day away. I don't feel inclined to have sex during my period even though my partner wants to. I have masterbated during and it helps, although I have never had much menstrual discomfort.

Actually, ovulation can and does occur at any given time of the month. Even during menstruation.

Do you have a detailed source ? (Not that I don't believe you, I actually just want to know more)

I think my libido also kicks in more or less during ovulation. When ovulation happens is hard to predict (though some period-tracking apps to try and predict it). I only know it's happening because I get horny XD though I also have a slight increase in libido the last day or so of my period

:excl: Warning extreme TMI (depending on what you're into ;)) and I'm talking about menstruation not ovulation.

I masturbate whenever, and if I wanted sex, I'd screw whenever

Blood makes great lube  and most of the women's mags (the most reputable source ever haha) do recommend having sex on your period because yes orgasm can help relieve cramps (relaxes the cervical muscles, endorphins etc) and sex can (for many women) literally be more pleasurable at that time (of course that doesn't apply to everyone!)

I get that lots of people think that blood is gross, but actually it is just a normal part of the human body like semen or spit or sweat (and those are all pretty cool heh). I know if I wanted sex (I don't) I'd happily have it on my period as long as my (hypothetical) partner wanted that too (it would be cool if this hypothetical had a blood fetish haha)

Also, my libido goes into overdrive right before and during that monthly time. That's relatively common.

Now to get over my hatred of the fact that I have to suffer this monthly curse at all, which I despise with a passion to the extent that I'm going to go on birth control just to stop it :P

It's not impossible for ovulation to occur at any time of the month, but if it is occurring during menstruation a doctor may want to give that woman hormones to regulate her cycle. Figuring out when ovulation occurred is more accurate in hindsight. If a woman starts her period, she most likely ovulated two weeks ago and she's almost certainly not pregnant this month. The rhythm method is not a good method.

I think the OP is talking about period sex/hormones/masturbation and not ovulation. Some people just automatically assume they are the same thing, but yeah.. Going by what the OP said they don't seem to be asking about ovulation but about actual menstruation (ie bluuuuurd)

It's pretty common for people on their period to become more aroused. Bodies are made to do that. I masturbate during my period to relieve pain, and my heightened sex drive. I suggest to do it in the shower. Makes it cleaner and you don't have to worry about the blood.

But water dissolves natural lubrication.

I'm AFAB and still have all the female pieces n parts ( so far) and as far as my experiences the only times I experience any form of sex drive is during my periods (gotta love hormones :'D) when I do have them; I've also got PCOS so mine are heavily irregular and don't happen all too often. I don't experience anything as far as pain relief or things of the like though when I do the deed, probably because I'm kinda grossed out by it. If you're goin at it by yourself I suggest towels and toys with condoms or good safe cleaning solutions to keep things sanitary and clean and as for yourself showers or baths can help with the mess after the fact.

Is it indicative of a problem if you don't feel anything different while on your period?

I don't think so? Its at least for me all hormone based and everyone reacts to them in a different way despite the hormones doing the same general things to a person's body. Not everyone'll have a heightened sex drive but its something that is generally one of those evolutionary leftovers from a time when mating for survival of your genes was about the only thing important in regards to any of that. Its stronger in some than in others.

I just had my period and I didn't have anything close to a sex drive or libido leading up to or during it. I don't think I would have even been able to become aroused if I masturbated. Periods don't always lead to a libido.

Like nearly everyone said, the hormonal changes can cause some increase in libido. probably explains why some people's libido goes into overdrive during puberty. regarding doing the do while menstruating, it's perfectly safe but use some kind of barrier protection unless you're trying to concieve/are ready to go through pregnancy and have a kid.
