3 new vis/ed forums

Hello everybody,

We are excited to announce the launch of three new forums for the purposes of vis/ed projects. The wiki team, info team and AVENues have their own forums on AVEN now and if you want to be a part of any of the groups, please send a PM to:

For AVENues: scarpur laticat

For Wikiteam: TBD until new wikimaster is elected. (if you are a current member of the team or have questions please send a PM to Kisa the Cat)

For Info Team: TBD until new Project team member is elected (if you are a current info team member or have questions please send a PM to Kisa the Cat)

As of right now, the forums are visible to the public, but the topics are not. This is so members know that the forums exist, but for projects that need privacy (e.g. info team, AVENues) can still maintain their confidentiality.

Thank you and we hope that these forums will be a very useful addition to AVEN,

Kisa the Cat, Administrator

Why would the announcement be made if, not only the forums themselves aren't active, but the 3 PT members who would likely be "in charge" of them are all vacated and the positions are currently up for election? What good does it do anyone? By the time the PT slots are filled, this announcement will be buried and no one will remember that they're there? Wouldn't it have been smarter to wait for the PT elections to at least be over first?

Is that an appropriate metaphor on an asexual site? :-P

You've lost me - what is wrong with it? Just means doing things in a manner other than the conventional norm. THe horse PULLS the cart.

In this instance, I agree with Lia, by announcing it now - when three members of the PT have stepped down and there will be around 2 weeks+ for the whole thing to get buried by other matters. New PT members will need some time to settle in so plunging additional new issues on them would be a bit much. I'd have though it better to wait a few weeks.

Just saying.

Well it also helps them to know what they would be getting into, more or less. I know that personally, I'd be a bit peeved if I signed up for a job and then found out that I actually had something not "mentioned in the paperwork" so to speak

Why not have it as part of the job description? As an 'in the pipeline' addition.

Is it just me who can't see the forums?

At the same time, I see a new subforum in Announcements that is currently empty. I imagine it has a purpose (I haven't looked for the announcement made for it), but could it maybe be hidden until it is used? A new starter (researcher or not) could think that AVEN doesn't have research request, by not knowing that that's a new subforum.

You're not the only one

I'll look into that when I get home and have ACP buttons. It should be visible.

As for the forums, we were already using AVENues and I was getting ready to use the other two.

These three new forums are going to be used to keep things more organized. AVENues discussion was mostly in separate threads in Open Mic and somewhere else (sorry, don't remember), Skype, and also PM's. But now there's this new specific forum for all AVENues-related discussions. : ) Same with the other two new forums. They were kind of here and there and being done through PM's etc., but now there's a place for things to be organized.

The issue should be fixed now. I put them in a new category and that was making things wonky. I just fixed the category so now y'all should be able to see it.

Why is it visible to every member when you anyway gotta get special permission to use it?

I can see them now. Why a new category if they're announced as "vis/ed" forums, and they're clearly vis/ed related? How come the team decided to make a new category rather than putting them in Vis/Ed?

Seems unneccessary clutter of the page, IMO.

Since you now made this announcement, and the subs remain inaccessible for ~99% of the users, I'd strongly suggest to just hide them. Maybe give it a few more days to sink in that "they're there", if you think that needs to get done - but I'm really not fond of completely unusable stuff in the category list. They should just show up for those folks who can actually access them.

My original questions were never answered, and ith's last post brings up very good points - I'm interested in the answer to those, too. Is this one of those things that the Team is just going to ignore and hope we get bored of asking and therefore it'll just go away?

I missed the part of ith's post about the research requests but I think there was an announcement about that. I'll check it out. That one was a PT project thingy related to research requests so they wouldn't clutter up announcements.

I don't think hiding the forums is a good idea because just having them out there IS visibility enough for them.

Yeah my original questions still weren't answered.

Regarding the empty subforum in Announcement, my concern went unaddressed: a new starter (researcher or not) could think that AVEN doesn't have research request (or publications), by not knowing that that's a new subforum. Wouldn't it be better to only have it public once there's been more work behind it? It looks really bad right now.

Honestly it's kinda irritating and pointless to have it open to everyone. First it's a waste of space and second of all it's ķinda like "nanana you are not part of our special club!"

Considering it's low amount of actual users, could it not be like sub forums for Visibility and Education Projects? That way if it's that important that it is visible, it will be and at the same time the 99% of the forum can use the board like they are used to.

I think that you should take in mind that the feedback from members haven't exactly been overwhelming positive and by the looks of it these forums seem kinda dead, and it is other subforums that are more active and open. When it comes to them being "protected" forums visible to all.

In Conclusion I would suggest they should be sub-forums. Or perhaps open to everyone to see, but not open for comments like admod archives (if the work is so important it need some sort of red tape). Seem like good compromises to me, but I guess it will fall to deaf ears.

I think they should be hidden, also. I keep scrolling down to the bottom and clicking the wiki team section instead of Hot Box.. Seems unnecessary imo

I'm going to poke somebody else about the research request forum because that was approved by the team, but it is a PT issue. I am not trying to lay blame on somebody else or ignore this question, I am genuinely less qualified to answer questions about the research subforum than some other people. The only thing I feel comfortable saying is that personally, I voted in favor of it because of the amount of research requests that flooded announcements including some where I was unsure if the project team had approved it or not. As for the original announcement about it, it is here

Lia I think I might have missed your original question if it hasn't been answered yet. I'm really trying to get to everyone and I apologize if I miss anything. If it's why the announcement would be made right now, I thought I answered it earlier in that we were working with some of the forums already and these forums would also be important for some of the new PT to know about at this point in time.

As for the other forums, we will take the idea of putting them under vis/ed under advisement. Seriously, we are hearing you guys and we want the members to be happy and personally, I don't see the idea as a terrible thing.
