Asexual Story

I'm trying to write a story about asexuality to help my friends understand it and as a way to sort of "come out" as asexual to them. Is this a good idea? Also, (if it is a good idea) what should the conflict be?

Writing a story's always a great idea! From your wording, I assume this would be a short story, whose main focus would be to focus on helping people understand asexuality? If not, just correct me, but I'm going to continue along that assumption for this post.

I suppose you could focus on sensations and feelings of the protagonist (who, one would assume, is asexual?). In this way, you could use the story to act as a window of sorts into how being asexual feels, and how they view the world differently. Hm... sorry, this is tricky. I'm more used to writing a story for being a story than for underlying messages. Also, it depends on what your comfortable writing about, and what you want to write about. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'conflict' in this case. My brain takes things really literally, so 'conflict' brings to mind people bashing each other with various blunt and bladed weapons, which I don't think was your intention.

I don't know if that helps at all, but it definitely sounds like a novel idea, and I wholeheartedly agree with newgirl about the lack of asexuals in popular culture. I'd be hard pressed to find a TV series without a frequent sexual and/or romantic subplot.

Maybe look into short stories or short films (on YouTube for example) about coming out as gay/bi/lesbian/transgender/etc. just to get some ideas? Even if they don't relate to asexuality they usually have a good plot that might give you some ideas of how to twist what that character faces trying to come out and you can find a way to relate it to coming out as asexual, just change some of the actions or feelings so that it relates to asexuality?

Also, depending on how comfortable you are you could write about strictly your own feelings discovering asexuality and if you had any struggles with it as the base and then add coming out scenes or jokes from peers or something to show perhaps a struggle and then finish it positively so that the main character ends up coming out to friends and they accept them (hopefully what you'll do with your friends).

Hoped that helped! Best of luck!

Hey Bear, I think that's a great idea to use a story to help your friends understand!

I'm a fan of allegory, and also of magical realism. You could make up a sort of extended metaphor for your character. For example, once I made up a short story about a character who randomly started turning invisible one day and how they dealt with that, and it ended up as a sort of way to illustrate how depression felt. Kind of cheesy, I know, but it worked.

Maybe you could do something similar. Oftentimes I find magic is easier to understand than reality. :)

Good luck, and please tell us how it turns out!
