g_squidman
I was wondering if anyone knows of some kind of running list of anime series that are safe for someone to watch if they don't want to deal with sexual scenes. Anime sorely needs this. If there is a list like this, I'd appreciate some directions so I could check it out myself, but if there isn't, then I'd like to start one here. So I'll start by making a quick list in alphabetical order and people can suggest additions (or argue against something that is on the list if necessary). Anime is a great thing, but many series are just over-charged with innuendos, or ridiculous situations, or fan service. That said, there are still many, very good anime series that do have sexual parts. For those series, I am willing to make a compromise, but sometimes, I just don't want to make that compromise. So this is meant to list anime that is "sex averse friendly." That means it shouldn't contain any sexual scenes or fan service. .hack/Roots .hack/Sign Acchi Kocchi Aggressive Retsuko Akagami No Shirayukihime Akagi Akatsuki No Yona Angel Beats Anohana Another Aoi Hana/Sweet Blue Flowers Arakawa: Under the Bridge Arslan Senki Assassination Classroom Attack on Titan Azumanga Daioh Baby Steps Bakemono No Ko Bakuman. Taiji
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun isn't sexual, I believe. It's very cutesy and plays a lot on the shoujo genre, but as far as I can recall, no sexual scenes. Anime about a manga shoujo artist and his assistant who has a very large crush on him (which he is completely oblivious too. The extra kicker is that he is absolutely clueless about romance too... how is he a shoujo artist??) Shirokuma Cafe/Polar Bear Cafe is a really cute anime about ... a polar bear running a cafe! The human characters that are in the anime aren't sexualized at all either. I think most sports anime don't have sexual themes to them either (well idk about Free but...). Yowamushi Pedal is a biking anime and it's an all-men team of high school competitive bikers. Saint Young Men is a movie, but I think it's pretty mild. There's like one joke about a girl wearing a short skirt but it's not shown in the anime. It's an anime about Jesus and Buddha being roommates on Earth.
Member54880
Evangelion does have a lot of Freudian references in it, and there are some portrayals of sexuality, but they're are all seen in a negative light in the series.Haibane Renmei is a good anime that doesn't have any innuendo, sexual situations or fan service. thewindsleeper
I don't think Trigun has any fanservice in it, and the most sexual it gets is when it insinuates that two characters had sex off-screen(correct me if I'm wrong it's been a few years)
.,.
I don't think Trigun has any fanservice in it, and the most sexual it gets is when it insinuates that two characters had sex off-screen(correct me if I'm wrong it's been a few years) TRIGUN IS BRILLIANT. If sex is implied is very debatable. She stayed with him over night, that's all we know. I personally like to think that they did have sex though, in the despair of the situation at the time. As a grasp at some distraction and consolement for the both of them. Then again they might as well have achieved that just being close to each other. But I like the depth it adds to the characters assuming they actually did it. Having two characters be sexually intimate is a great plot device, especially in a series as emotionally loaded as Trigun. It would mean that their relationship was actually further developed than we as the audience had been led to believe up to that point, making the scenes that follow all the more tragic. Is this series being made to seem like some soapy romance right now? I promise it's not at all!
Star Bit
I wouldn't say sex-free is asexual friendly but sex averse friendly. Some sexual people don't like seeing others have sex. The title should be more like "anime free of sexual scenes (including fan-service)"
ghostwriter
Honey and Clover is pretty clean. It's mostly just about unrequited love. There are a couple of scenes that might imply sex but are pretty open to interpretation. To me it seems asexual friendly because it's more about love and friendship than sex, and that's not a common thing in a movie or show when romance is present. From what I remember, Tiger and Bunny is also pretty clean. There are a few moments that might make one uncomfortable, like when one character flirts with another in a really obvious way and the other character isn't interested, or skimpy outfits; but there is not much romance and zero sex. CathMaybe
natsume yuujinchou - one of my favs and very little sexual things... I can hardly remember any tbh... one of my all time favorite animes ^_^ like there's some kisses i think, but those are in filler episodes and actually contibute to the story. kawaiipanda
Azumanga daioh is one of my favorites, it's the most accurate portrayal of high school life I've seen in an anime, and no romance!
plzletmedeletemyaccount
Lucky Star doesn't have any actual sex in it, though it is mentioned as a joke once in a while. It's good in case anyone wants a light, cute, shoujo anime since most on the list so far aren't. Clannad is another good one. Definitely ace-friendly. Also, xxxHOLiC was already recommended, but I'd just like to second that...it's my all-time favorite, and great for those more philosophical anime-watchers!
emma-can
I am not totally sure I would consider Evangelion to be ace-friendly, especially End of Evangelion @_@ it's still good though. Otherwise: Nichijou Chi's Sweet Home (which is a kid's show) Twin Spica/Futatsu no Spica Kyousougiga Bunny Drop/Usagi Drop Psycho-Pass (does have a rape in the first episode but afterwards is sexless) Croisee in a Foreign Labyrinth Tamako Market Inferno Cop (which is shit-crazy and has a crazy birthing scene but is okay overall)
girltwink666
i've only watched one anime and that is Ouran High School Host Club and not only does it have No Sex, it is also very possible to construe the protagonist as asexual so thats even better
Guest
Terror in Resonance Hyouka Kyoukai no Kanata Black Rock Shooter (debatable; if you don't mind short shorts and bras, there's no bouncy body parts or anything though :P ) Those are some of my top choices :)
g_squidman
So I updated the list with everyone's suggestions. Thank you for the help. Evangelion does have a lot of Freudian references in it, and there are some portrayals of sexuality, but they're are all seen in a negative light in the series.Haibane Renmei is a good anime that doesn't have any innuendo, sexual situations or fan service. Aqua-ace helped remind me about a particularly bad episode of Evangelion (I must have sub-consciously blocked it out), so I removed that. Kino's Travels Monster Juuni Kokki L/R Kaze no Yojimbo Human Crossing Samurai 7 Samurai Champloo House of Five Leaves Planet ES xxxholic Zone of Enders Yami Shibai Kagawani Kekkai Sensen Death Parade Kindaichi Case Files Beautiful Bones Kaiji Hell Girl Phoenix Blood + Hunter x Hunter Detective Academy Q Detective Conan Akagi Those for now - there are many anime series out there without any over sexual references and maybe just some minor romantic subplots. Thanks for the long list, Black Kitty-san. I added Samurai Champloo, but I remember it taking me two tries to watch it. I thought that was because of something sexual, at least in the first episode or so, but I don't remember anything specific. So if anyone thinks that should be removed after all, just leave a comment. Thanks for the suggestions, ghostwriter. I just wanted to make a point about skimpy outfits. Nai also made a comment about shot shorts and bras. In my opinion, that's totally fine. As an asexual, I don't usually see things like that as particularly sexual, unless it's blatant and obvious. It's just not on my mind. I'm willing to include anime like that, as long as it isn't too over-the-top.
Breetanya
Saint Tail Ao no Exorcist/Blue Exorcist Card Captor Sakura (but there is an implied romantic situation between two older male characters) Tegami Bachi/Letter Bee... but there might be some nudity I think Crest of the Stars Banner of the Stars... but Banner of the Stars II does deal with references to sexual situations and rape. Nothing onscreen as far as I recall. Read or Die/ROD TV... (Bibliophiles who can manipulate paper into golems, blades, and other weapons) *Gunslinger Girl... but there are mentions of off-screen torture/rape/assault/etc... it's an incredibly sad series. I watch it when I want to cry all day.

I know not everyone associates skimpy outfits (sorry if that was a poor choice of words, I couldn't think of a better one) with sex, but some people do, and so I wanted to mention it if I put Tiger and Bunny in the post; so that if it was something that might make someone uncomfortable that they would know before they watched it. UraNepu
- Hibike! Euphonium (slight hints of romantic feelings, and just a bit of word teasing on like just the first episode) - Sailor Moon (90s version has some pantie shots is about 5 episodes out of the 200, and a bit of innuendo that suggests intimacy but nothing to blunt on the last season. The Crystal version is free of fanservice so far) - Rose of the Versailles (very old, elegant historical anime about the French revolution) - Casshern Sins (is basically the story of a cyborg with amnesia) I would recommend more but for some reason my mal profile doesn't exist anymore ?_? akanesarumara
Hetalia might be a borderline case, it has loads of fanservice... though I love the series. I would put almost anything by Miyazaki here. Kiki's delivery service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's moving castle are the ones I saw but they all have at most a puppy-love style portrayal of romance. PJammaGod
Anohana Attack on Titan Black Rock Shooter Clannad Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Death Parade Erased Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Ghost Hunt Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Kekkai Sensen Mahou Shoujo Madoka Majica One Punch Man Samurai Champloo Trigun All solid recommendations there, I've just listed the highlights that I will happily reinforce as worth watching. Hmm apologies if I repeat series that have already been listed, I had a look through but sometimes my brains fails me in unexpected ways. Amusingly in another thread I listed some of these already. Hanasaku Iroha Shirobako Angel Beats (I don't recall anything racy, forgive me if I'm wrong. I lacks a beach episode so that's usually a good start) Charlotte (interesting side-note, Lia performed the opening for both Angel Beats & Charlotte) Your Lie in April (important warning, this is one gets out a monomolecular scalpel and takes to your emotions with a finesse that no doubt will later be banned by the Geneva Convention) Chuunibyou (there's a beach episode, but nothing fan service so it's good) Honestly I could keep going on but my ultimate recommendation would be to check out Glass Reflection and subscribe to Arkada's channel. He's the best anime reviewer I've come across thus far and will break down a series into the information you'll want to know (he calls out fan service and other content pretty quickly). -PJ the ani'mad Troll Alert: Ack quick thought. Be careful when asking for recommendations, some people will seek to troll you. If anybody recommends High School DxD give them an unimpressed look (it's actually not bad don't get me wrong, but oh boy not asexual friendly). If they mention School Days you are legally permitted to kick them somewhere very sensitive (repeatedly if that takes your fancy) and walk away. Sincerely be careful, I've known friends whom did not do their research and were caught out by the trolls.
Kuroneko
Forgot to mention these ones: Hare Guu (seriously one of the funniest anime series I've watched - there's almost nothing funnier than seeing Guu's bland expression) Tactics Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran (it's really good but not very popular and plus the main character is a cool female swordsman) Rumiko Takahashi Anthology or Rumic Theatre NieA Under 7 Utena (I'm very particular about shoujo since I'm not a romance fan but this one is of my favourite anime series) Yu Yu Hakusho Irresponsible Captain Tylor - a 1990's anime series and its popularity is practically due to an amazing cast of characters. If only they can remake this series. Blue Exorcist Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Someday's Dreamers Petshop of Horrors Last Exile
kinky cupid
i love the idea of this list! i'm not sex-averse but sometimes i get tired of seeing it everywhere in everything. it's been a long time since i watched it but i don't think kashimashi: girl meets girl has anything explicit in it? not that i remember anyway, but it's been years so i could be wrong. there might be some fanservice? it does have some weird jokes at some point where it's implied that a father is attracted to his teenage daughter (it doesn't lead up to anything and it's purely there for comedy) but they aren't explicit or anything. the one i remember in particular has him trying to get her to put on a skimpy dress for a christmas photo (i think) only for her mother to whack him on the head and send him away. i know there were a few similar jokes in other episodes but they aren't a big part of the show. anyway, the show is about a lesbian love triangle where the main character was originally male, but got genderswapped by aliens and basically decided to just role with it and lives happily as a woman. plzletmedeletemyaccount
Hare Guu (seriously one of the funniest anime series I've watched - there's almost nothing funnier than seeing Guu's bland expression) BE STILL, MY HEART! Somebody knows Hare + Guu! I've been searching for DVDs (or even just weblinks) of this anime for ages...I actually found a box set that came with the first DVD and the elder's chest hair a couple months ago, but have not had any luck since. Anyway, I'm just excited because I can only recall ever meeting one other person familiar with it xD
