So uh... when are women fertile?

Wonderment

Recommended Posts

I am terribly ignorant about this sort of thing.

Mostly I just let my menstrual cycle go with the flow and I don't think of it much. I've read many different things about women being fertile all the time, but also many different things about being fertile for only a few days. It's so terribly confusing.

Can someone please clear it up for me? The whole different stages of the cycle to do with ovulation and fertility and all the jazz.

"The fertile window

We’re talking about the days in a woman’s menstrual cycle when pregnancy is possible. Pregnancy is technically only possible during the five days before ovulation through to the day of ovulation.

These six days are the ‘fertile window’ in a woman’s cycle, and reflect the lifespan of sperm (5 days) and the lifespan of the ovum (24 hours).

If a woman has sex six or more days before she ovulates, the chance she will get pregnant is virtually zero. If she has sex five days before she ovulates, her probability of pregnancy is about 10%.The probability of pregnancy rises steadily until the two days before and including the day of ovulation. At the end of the ‘fertile window’, the probability of pregnancy declines rapidly and by 12-24 hours after she ovulates, a woman is no longer able to get pregnant during that cycle. For those women who are not aware of their ‘fertile window’ or when they ovulate, sexual intercourse is recommended every 2 to 3 days to help optimise their chance of conceiving."

As far as I know, the information Fire Monkey posted is correct. If you're interested in figuring out when you're fertile, a lot of period tracking apps will also let you know which days specifically you are fertile once you've given it enough input on when your periods are, which can be useful.

Yeah, Fire Monkey's info is good! Like deltaX said, apps are good. I use the app "Clue" to track my cycle (not for fertility reasons, just to know when I'm gonna bleed.....) but it will also give you an estimate on your fertile window and when you ovulate!

Just some added facts, nothing is 100%. All the information Fire Monkey gave is correct, however the human body can do some weird things, like sporadically decide to ovulate at a different time than your normal (including during your period). While this is extremely rare, it is still possible. Following your cycle is a great way to know when you are fertile, however don't rely on it to be 100% if it is your only method of preventing pregnancy. Chances are, you're only ever fertile during those 6 days, but there's always the (very slim) possibility your body may choose to surprise you.
