mark141
Dr. Lori Brotto at the University of British Columbia and Dr. Tony Bogaert at Brock University in Ontario, Canada are collaborating on a study investigating sexual arousal in asexual men (SAAM). This study entails coming into our lab in Vancouver and watching a series of erotic films in a private, locked room, while sexual arousal is measured through a penile plethysmograph (a rubber band type of device). There are questionnaires before and after the study to be completed. The goal of the SAAM study is to help further our understanding of men with little or no sexual attraction/desire with the purpose of decreasing stigma associated with the lifelong lack of sexual attraction. Participants will be paid $50, and there is an opportunity to participate in a second phase of the study for an additional $25.This study has been approved by the UBC Clinical Research Ethics Board. Principal Investigator: Dr. Lori Brotto. Co-Investigators: Dr. Tony Bogaert, Morag Yule, & Malvina Skorsa.Dr. Brotto is one of the leading researchers investigating research in Asexuality/Low Sexual Attraction and has conducted numerous studies in this field examining the experiences of asexuals, testing their sexual response patterns and exploring the biological basis to their (lack of) attractions. Refer to an article in the Globe and Mail Dr. Brotto has written for more information regarding her background: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health-advisor/understanding-what-it-means-to-be-asexual/article23454312/. Dr. Tony Bogaert (https://www.brocku.ca/psychology/people/bogaert.htm) published the original study documenting the prevalence of asexuality in 2004 and has recently published a book on understanding asexuality (http://www.amazon.com/Anthony-F.-Bogaert/e/B007LU54TY).For further information, you can also view this youtube clip of Morag Yule explaining the details around the SAAM study. It explains the logistics and requirements in detail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=47&v=FgyXScial2kOur ethics boards require that you contact us directly, so we will not be monitoring responses to this post. Please email Mark Antczak, the primary contact and research coordinator of the study if you have any questions or would like to participate (mark.antczak@vch.ca). A pre-screen phone survey is required to establish qualification for the study. We welcome any questions you might have!
Steph Ace
This study was previously approved earlier this year for this exact study. The researchers have again requested to advertise on AVEN. The Project Team has found no difference in their research and has approved of this renewal/ Research Request.
