Hi everyone! I discovered I'm grey-ace some time ago (the day I signed up on AVEN as a matter of fact), but I only had time to find out more about asexuality and become more comfortable with the label in the past few weeks, so I figured this would be a good time to introduce myself on here.

I found out about asexuality on tumblr, as many aces have, but at first I didn't really think the label fit me, because I've had crushes on guys. Only later I learnt that there's a distinction between romantic and sexual attraction and I started to wonder if I've actually ever experienced sexual attraction. I'm still not sure if I have, but if so, it's only been on a few fleeting occasions. I think. I'm still questioning everything. So that's basically how I came to the label grey-ace. I might just be asexual, without any greyness, but for now I feel more comfortable using this label.

What I also wanted to write about is my academic interest in asexuality. I'm doing a master in English literature in Amsterdam, and I specialise in gender and queer studies (I already did so before I discovered I'm not straight, so that's kinda funny). Because I've realised how little known asexuality is, I'm now thinking about writing my thesis on asexual representation (or erasure) in literature and/or film. I'm still trying to think of a more concrete topic (suggestions welcome), but I'm already pretty excited to be writing a thesis on this, as it's a highly original topic in my field (at least that's an advantage of nobody knowing about asexuality).

Anyway, that was about me and my aceness. I'm never really good at posting on forums, but I'll probably be lurking on here a lot.

Hello :) That would be a really awesome thing to do! Not much research has been done into asexuality as of yet, so it would be great for someone to do that :) I know there are some modern day TV characters that people think could be asexual, like Sheldon Cooper or Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, but it's never confirmed by the directors or anything. It would be good to have more ace representation in TV and film. If you do end up doing your thesis on this, will you post at least a section of it on here so we can see?

Thanks! Yes, I already found a very helpful list with potentially asexual characters, but most of them aren't explicitly ace, so I'll probably do something with that. And I think I'm going to publish my thesis when it's finished so everyone can read it! ;)

Hi welcome. I had an online asexual friend from the Netherlands once. Haven't been in contact with her for a while though.

Hello~ That sounds like a really good thesis. Film and media is so focused on romance, even stuff that's not in the romance genre has a bit of romance twisted into it.

Welcome to AVEN! :cake: You've come to the right place to learn and make friends and find support. : ) Tumblr has brought a lot of people here, which is great! It seems to have a nice asexual community. I'm glad it brought you here as well. Feel free to be as active as you want or lurk as much as you'd like, too!! Your studies sound really cool. That would be really neat to do your thesis on asexuality in literature/film. : )) Best wishes and I hope you enjoy being a member!

Hello and Welcome To AVEN!

That would be amazing! I (the moderator of the world watch, a spot that archives asexuality in media/internet/research) love to see new research/papers done on Asexuality. I'm glad that you've come back to the community and I hope that you enjoy being a part here, if you ever want any asexuals to interview for your paper check out the Project Team, and they'll make sure you have some :)

Welcome Again Fellow Cake Lover! xD
