Writing with Romance

Hello, so I like writing little blurgs, not stories or books just something I like to reread and enjoy later, but I can't for the life of me write romance.

I've tried going to those '10 Things To Tell You're In Love' or 'How To Write Believable Romance' and they always just say 'draw from experience' or 'you know that warm fuzzy feeling? Use that'. and I'm kind of in the corner like

So would it be possible to get some advise that doesn't have me looking for an emotion I've never even felt?

Thanks guys! :(

Haha! I totally know what you mean. I actually try to avoid writing about things that I don't know about or else it would take a lot of research. I'd say perhaps write from other people's experiences or try to picture yourself in their shoes. Kind of like acting. When acting, you are not you, you are a different character and you need to play it out as a believable character. In my acting class, we did character analysis to understand the character more and make it more believable. Err--does that make sense?

I'd suggest either using empathy (which can still be difficult if you don't understand the emotion well), drawing from other people's writing or their descriptions of romantic situations (friends or online inquiries could help with that), or simply faking/glancing over it. Or imagine it as a best friend scenario to the extreme with things like kissing.

I see. I never thought of that. Instead of imagining it through yourself or through someone you're writing, imagine as if you had to make it believable for the camera... Thanks! :D

I would learn to write romance by reading romance. :)

If you want to write romance as more a background/it's not the main plot, I'd read books where that's the case. There's quite a few. I can recommend some if you want. They'll give you an idea what is being felt without having to experience it yourself.

When I write I typically either write it as something I can relate to myself or like I write for others.

So if exemple am going to write a character I can't relate to like a serie killer and I do not know how it is to be a serie killer, then I try to find something I could relate to like "Anger" and I try to imagine that anger in an extreme form making my serie killer going to murder someone. exemple: "he ran up to the man he hated so badly, ready to stab him, he wanted him dead and never more would he see his ugly face" <- anger used here to decribe the serie killers thought

The same way you could use if you where going to write about romance, you could exemple use other type of love and friendship and think of them pretty intensely. Being honest I think most very close friendship could easly pass as romantic because of the "they are too close to be just friends" culture. and if you where in doubt you could add a simple gesture like handholding or a kiss. Most people would read it as romantic no matter whenver or not you consider it that way.

another thing as people already had said is to write a story though another persons eyes. here you could use inspiration from people you know, if exemple your sister once had been in love you could try write the story of "her", but more like from and outside point of view.

it would be less personal, and the emotions would more be on empahty.

"he made her so sad, how could he, when he knew she loved him? bla bla bla" <-- empathy used to decribe the characters feeling.

I hope this made sense..

Just write what you believe romance is like in your own perspective. Even though I never felt romantic feelings, in my own perspective, I guess romance is like when two people care about each other very much, not in a sexual way, but in a way that they would protect each other and be there for each other. I hope this helps a little.

You can actually get into writing romance if you are in it experiencing. Romance can be best written if you are going through it or if you regularly read some romance.
