Dawg4280
Like percentage wise, how many people do you think have heard of it?
R_1
0.25%? Maybe that. You know what? I'll put it to 0.125%.
TaminSweets
Based off my experience, I'll go with a solid 4%
stanACEberatheon
I'll be optimistic and say 6.9%. -_-
EmpathyAce
I'd love to hear what the actual percentage is. XDI'm not good with numbers, but I'd definitely say it's gotta be under 10%. Asexuals make up only 1% of the population, after all.
Guest
0.25%? Maybe that. You know what? I'll put it to 0.125%. My gut reaction was that this number is way too low... ...but then I remember how much I, and probably most folks here, tend to overestimate the degree of "internet literacy" of the world, at large. Lower than 1% is probably realistic, yes. Which, depressingly enough, means having heard about asexuality is probably a good deal less common than being asexual. :(
Visenya
I have no idea, to be honest. But where I live, feminism is becoming a "trend", especially among college students, and from what I've observed more people (at least the ones who spend some time online) are being introduced to the concept of asexuality. I cannot tell whether they think it's a real thing, but at least they're hearing about it, which is a big progress, IMO. But, still, the vast majority of people don't know what asexuality is. OttRInvy
I think this really depends on what you mean by having "heard" of it. My roommate actually showed me a "Asexual pirates aren't interested in your booty" meme, so you could say she knew about it. But after I came out to her I eventually found out she was confused how I could be asexual and have a crush. She also assumed that I didn't masturbate or watch/read porn. I think her knowledge of asexuality was more "doesn't like doing anything relationship/sex-related." How many people have heard of asexuality (in relation to people)? Maybe 7-10% of the population. How many people... 1) ...know the basic definition of asexuality, 2) ...don't think it's a mental/hormonal problem, and 3) ...think it's "real"? Maybe 1.3%.
chair jockey
I doubt that research has been done on this question, and it would be very hard to do because any question being asked would include the word "asexuality" and thereby inform the population that the concept of human asexuality exists, which would contaminate and probably invalidate the results. But recently I found the word "asexual" in a short story by Alice Munro that was written in the 1980s, so some vague awareness of asexuality has probably existed for a while now. _Understanding_ of asexuality is a different matter--and a more interesting question that could easily be measured with standard inferential studies. RaisedByHippies98
well, since 1% actually is knowingly asexual, i'd have to say at least four times that, counting up what i think the average number of people they tell is, so maybe 4%
Tanzanite
Hmm...3%? Maybe 4%?

I feel like most of that one percent still does not know.

I think that just getting the word out that asexual people claim to exist in the manner that we do should be our top priority as a movement, and for the most part I think it is. Change people's minds takes even more time and patience. Just look at what happened Friday morning and how long that took. Once someone knows we claim to exist they can not unknow it even if they want to. (sadistic laugh).
Dawg4280
I realize everyone is guessing, but I guess it is hard for me to tell because I have told a lot of people about it. So I live in a nice asexual aware bubble, which is not reflective of the whole population.
ObsessedWithAnime
well, since 1% actually is knowingly asexual, i'd have to say at least four times that, counting up what i think the average number of people they tell is, so maybe 4% Even though we may be 1%. I feel like most of that one percent still does not know. Every time I remember this I get so sad.. I just want asexuality to be visible so that people know that there is a group of people just like them and they aren't broken! I never want anyone to go through what I went through before finding asexuality. I realize everyone is guessing, but I guess it is hard for me to tell because I have told a lot of people about it. So I live in a nice asexual aware bubble, which is not reflective of the whole population. Haha I'm in a similar situation and if I encounter people who don't know about asexuality I try to educate them when possible (also if it fits into the conversation). I feel so bad for all the people on AVEN who haven't been able to experience this "asexual aware bubble" because boy does it feel nice to not be constantly passed over and ignored (by people I've educated, friends, and family anyway). Back to the main point of this.... I'd have to guess maybe 5% or so of people in the USA have heard of asexuality? But while I was think of this I was also reminded of the fact that this number is likely to change depending on region or part of the country so i think it's really hard to say an exact estimate... One thing I do know is that the number is far too low whatever it is! I hope it'll be 100% one day! :D
CMV
I'll say only 10 percent of people in the world have heard about it.
mm626
I'm going to go with 3%. I almost said 10, but I've ever heard anyone say they know what that is. Given that approximately 1% of the population is asexual, I'm thinking for every person who's asexual there's, on average, 1 or 2 people who know about said person's asexuality. But that's completely made up. :P
whocaresthough
I live in a highly Mormon area. I'd say probably .01%.
andreas1033
I think only a very small amount, like you said above. The media, is so obsessed with sexuality, that they never have any real asexual characters. So the public really are so conditioned that everyone is sex mad, but they are obviously wrong. Autumn Season
There are a lot of countries in the world, many conservative political systems and a lot of internet illiteracy. That means there is probably a very low percentage of people, who know about asexuality in the world. In "real life", there are at least seven people who I've talked to about asexuality. Two of them said that they have heard about asexuality before. Both were in their twenties. So maybe 29% of twenty + year olds in Germany have heard about asexuality (without necessarily knowing what exactly it means). I guess, the younger the person, the more they know about and accept new worldviews.
Tarfeather
All my friends have heard of asexuality. They also considered it a perfectly normal thing to know about that everyone should have heard of. They never told me, though, so I didn't know about the term until age 20+. Anyway, my guess is that in Germany it's way above 1%, among the younger generation it's probably way above 20% too. Amy M
i'd say around 5% of people. i bet a lower percentage of people know that there's a difference between a sexual orientation and a romantic orientation
