Tospringe
Hi everyone! I was thinking about the fact that I almost exclusively listen to artists who have very little songs centered around romance, and those artists aren't always very easy to find. So, I thought, why not make a post here so other people who do the same thing can all recommend their favourite artists to each other! I listen a lot to M83, Radical Face and Coldplay. (I know there's this weird stigma around Coldplay in the English speaking countries but that has never been the case where I live and I don't care, also, most of their songs either aren't about romance at all or can very easily be interpreted to be about something else) Who do you like? KendraPM
I like all music pretty much. But some non-romantic songs I like are: A lot of Classic Rock is about things other than romance (ACDC, Led Zeplin, Judas Priest, Queen etc.) Human by Sarina Rosa Euythmics (Sweet Dreams are Made of These guys) The Ramones Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper Joan Jett has several as does Pat Benater Evanescence goes for dark, sad music Owl City has some that are not romantic The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars A lot of rap songs aren't about romance (but you'll get a lot about sex) Los Angeles by Sugarcult Lily Allen has several songs about things other than romance (Fuck You is a political statement, Alfie is about a younger brother, Everyone's At is about everyone doing drugs, etc.) How To Save a Life by...I don't actually know Black Eyed Peas have a lot of dance music Whip My Hair by Willow Smith for a more pop music feel, Disney, when they still have a hold of their teen stars, often have the produce several albums are that primarily about things other than romance
binary suns
:D whip my hair! teehee I'd love to recommend the artists I listen to but, for now, I actually do not have a good sense which of them are nonromanitc and how many songs they have that are non romanitc -_- although, well it's easy to be nonromantic when you're nonvocal so lemme say I love Ratatat, Apacalyptica, and recently, DJ Okawari, and would recommend them all. Apoc is a Cello cover band, epic stuff; Ratatat is, er, well they're instrumental they're great; Okawari is mostly nonvocals but they has a number of vocal songs in fact my favorite of theirs is one of my favorite Ratatat's is
knout
This thread is heading in a similar direction, maybe you can find inspiration :)
Tes273
Nearly all of Capital Cities' songs aren't about romance (perhaps that's why I love their music)
snake_n_eggs
I apparently have some "romance" songs in my playlist, but I honestly never notice that aspect and even when I do listen to romantic songs it's just because I like the music instead of the lyrics
madame president
Twenty-One Pilots isn't about romance. Their songs make you think, it's fantastic.
Wannabe Vulcan
REM has a lot of songs that aren't romantic, as do Midnight Oil, Supertramp (kind of), XTC, Sabaton (if you're into songs about war), or if you want less serious stuff, Julian Smith and Weird Al.
EggplantWitch
I agree with the already-suggested Coldplay, who are an alternative rock band - they have a few romancey ones but for the most part their songs are just songs and can be interpreted in a myriad of ways. Elbow, also an alternative rock band (who I adore) have some romancey ones too but, charmingly, they have an equal amount of songs about platonic love too (e.g. My Sad Captains, Dear Friends, Open Arms). As well as songs about fixing horse races, family heirlooms, and Jesus being a Rochdale girl. There's also The Hoosiers, described by iTunes as 'Alternative & Punk', whatever that means, and none of the songs of theirs I can think of are to do with romance at all. KanoEvey
A lot of Falconer songs aren't romantic in the least. It's pretty medieval in subject matter, actually. They have a song called "Lord of the Blacksmiths." They're a power metal group from Sweden. AMAZING group.
Star Inkbright
Imagine Dragons are really cool and they have songs on a variety of things. :)
OttRInvy
This Will Destroy You -- Quiet (instrumental song) Greg Laswell -- Another Life to Lose & the 2013 remake of What a Day Lifehouse -- Storm Regina Spektor -- Eet SafetySuit -- These Times Modest Mouse -- Float On & Bukowski Needtobreathe -- The Outsiders I Fight Dragons -- My Way I'm awful at naming genres, so I just sorted them on the basis of happiness/optimism. As you go down the list, the songs become more "happy."
Mikasa
This thread made me realize that like 90% of the songs I listen to is romantic... I don't mind really mind though. I also listen to a lot of Korean music and I don't even understand those songs without looking for a translation online :P Anyway, this is one of my non-romantic faves:
KendraPM
Taylor Swift has a surprising number of non-romantic songs. Safe and Sound, could go either way, but with it being on the Hunger Games soundtrack, I've assumed it was about Katniss and Prudence and Rue. Bad Blood. Again, goes either way. The music video shows it being a fight between best friends. Shake It Off Mean Fifteen Best Day Ever
Dodecahedron314
I second XTC, and in that same vein would add Devo, Oingo Boingo, the B-52s, and Gary Numan--all mostly pretty bizarre and/or random, but largely nonromantic. Also, a fair proportion of songs by The Church are nonromantic or can be interpreted as such. As for less well-known stuff (yes, I'm plugging Jamendo artists again), look up Heifervescent--his new album is both awesomely constructed, musically and lyrically on point, and completely romance-free. Josh Woodward has a decent amount of nonromantic stuff, but it's split about 50/50 between that and happy dorky love songs.
wednesdaywoe
I really like romantic songs but I'm sure I have plenty of non-romantic ones in my collection. Having said that, literally the only thing I can think of is Splish Splash by Bobby Darin  I really like a lot of novelty songs from the 50s/60s and most of those are about romance. I should make myself a playlist and come back & answer the thread properly (seriously, as soon any question about types of songs/movies/shows is asked my mind goes completely blank). Miav-desu
9:am on this track when I get tired of romance I usunally listen to songs in other languarges I dont understand.
emma-can
Agnes Obel writes a lot of beautiful songs thatwell they may be romance-based but it's hard to tell (Try "Riverside") Regina Spektor writes songs that are usually more like stories. Some of them focus on other people's relationships but I'd say not usually. (Try her album Soviet Kitsch) Imogen Heap's songs tend to be romance based but not all (Try "Hide and Seek" or her album "Sparks") I think Jónsi's one romance song is in Icelandic so XD (Try his album "Go"which is his only album) I'd say most of KT Tunstall's stuff is either introspective or observing other people. (Try her albums "Drastic Fantastic" or "Tiger Suit") REM has a crapton of music since they were around for 30 years. I'm not really sure how much is and isn't romance based. It can be hard to tell what their songs are about, anyway. ("Automatic for the People") Of Monsters and Men is like Agnes Obel in that the meaning is difficult to decipher ("My Head is an Animal")
