How rare are asexuals?

I think it'd be more than 1% now, but they need to do another fucking test that isn't fifteen years old.

...and state the question better!

Yes, agreed!!

A little bit less rare than Feebas in RSE.

I think my best friend is grey-A, but I dunno, she doesn't care enough to have a full-blown conversation about her own sexuality. She just prefers to call herself straight, because she says it's easier. I totally respect that. ^ ^

Otherwise speaking, my dad could be. He could be celibate, but I dunno why he would be. He hasn't gone out with or even met up with any females since he divorced my mom, unless she was related to one of his friends or family. So, that's possible.

Other than that, I haven't specifically seen someone. Though, the first day of school, I'm going to wear full-blown ace outfit and I'm going to have hair to match! I'll probably find some other aces. ^ ^ <3

Blue Phoenix Ace

I've put up the beacon at work. A purple with various shades of grey lock screen and background. No hits yet. ;)

No one is sure, but when Alfred Kinsey did his report, he identified a spectrum from heterosexual to homosexual, and a separate group he called "X" that simply were not on the scale at all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsey_scale

Of his test subjects, about 1.5% of males and somewhere around 5% of females fell into the "X" category. You could argue that the "X" group does not exactly conform to asexuality, and the numbers of subjects tested were too limited to come up with a meaningful statistical percent. I don't know of any better or more recent studies that would be more accurate.

I wouldn't be surprised by those numbers. The gov to some degree must of wanted to know, and done some studies. Those sort of numbers would not surprise me.

According to the Australian Bureau of statistics, 5% of people in their 80s have never married. I know not all of these are aces, and indeed some aces do marry. But if it is indeed a sex orientation like bi/homo/hetero, expect similar percentages, about 5%...

In my opinion there has to be mroe awareness of asexuality before there's really a representative poll.

Like we know, people find it hard to define themselves in terms of words, or terms.

Assuming the 1% statistic, one would assume that out of every 100 people you knew, one of them would be asexual. Well, I've known hundreds of people (well enough to reasonably know their sexuality), and I have yet to meet another asexual person outside of AVEN (unless you count demisexuals).

I am asexul. And I have a friend who is ace. And anotherfriednd who is gray-a (demisexual) but that I the extant of the people I know. And I consider myself lucky to know that many.

I've heard that it's only 1% of the population but I think it's probably higher than that. I'm meeting more and more people that feel the same way I do (lacking sexual attraction) but so many people don't know the term for it and because of the lack of awareness not many people know they identify as ace.

There's definitely more than 1%, and they definitely should focus more on various age groups rather than just teenagers. No offense to anyone, but teenagers are probably part of the most sexually fluid age group. They could say they are asexual for a few years, then bisexual, then homosexual. That's not to say that teenagers cannot define themselves (because that's unfair if other sexualities can define themselves that young), but they need to acknowledge that at such an age, they are still figuring themselves out in many ways. I do believe there are some aces, like homosexuals and heterosexuals, who know their orientation at young ages already, so we cannot just disregard nor belittle them. I have met some fifteen year olds who do say their asexual without knowing the definition or because they are not dating yet. <_< That gets annoying sometimes.

(I'm fifteen, ouch) No, but you're totally right. I think the answers that they put in it were kind of difficult for an asexual person to answer. I mean, a bunch of us don't even know what sexual attraction feels like, and may figure they feel it even if they're only homo-, hetero-, or biromantic. So, I think they should state the question that appeals to all orientations. Also, that age thing was totally right. They should have you give your age or age group along with the poll so that it can be a little more accurate.

Also, in favor of demisexuals and grey-asexuals, the need to put like a "how many times have you felt this" question, as well.
