definition of genderfluid

is it just me or is the definition for gender fluid weird?

it says that a gender fluid person is " :a person with no set gender identity, e.g. a genderless or bigender person (?)"

last time i checked it meant someone who's gender is transient, they don't constantly "set" gender but one that may change regularly,

is this there something strange with this definition or is it just me?

I mean, not everyone who identifies as anything is going to fit a specific definition 100% right?

Genderless/agender and bigender are their own distinct identities, yeah. A person could be genderfluid AND experience one of those at a given time, but they aren't one and the same. I completely agree with you.

When I've done workshops, I've always defined GF as "having two or more gender identities, but experiencing change and fluctuation within those identities, experiencing one or the other at different times". Versus, say, bigender being the experience of two genders, with nothing said of how fluid those identities are. Again, I'm not about to force that label on someone if it doesn't fit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd say as long as you experienced at least one gender change in your life (and not as a child as little children's gender perception is naturally more fluid), your gender is fluid. It already changed, and it might change again later. The definition should be as simple as possible.

I agree, but within that definition, wouldn't the majority be genderfluid to a degree? But I think genderfluid the identity is more consistent change. I mean, in my early teens I wobbled between nonbinary and male, but I wouldn't call myself GF.

Eh, I'm sure a bonafide genderfluid person could offer some good commentary.

I don't think having experienced gender change at least once in life is a common thing. (I'm not talking about slight variations, but big change)

True, true, that's the part I agree on. Just from the experiences I've listened to, people who have a shift in their identity once or twice won't/don't identify as GF. It's the people who shift/fluctuate/change semi- or regularly.

Btw I see you identify as fluid, just so you kno I'm not trying to speak over you, I just never look to the left lol.

I agree that the definition is way old. I'm personally working on updating the definitions, so I'll post here what I have for genderfluid when I get home this evening, I promise ;)

It's much better I think. But this would be a good place to get feedback and commentary on it, so I'll jump at the chance!

I've always understood the definition of Genderfluid to be: a person whose identity moves between multiple genders.

For me, I shift through Agender, Androgyne, Woman(ish), and, occasionally, Guy on a daily/weekly basis. Although, it's not necessarily in that order or even one at a time. Sometimes it switches abruptly but more often my gender just sort of flows from one identity to another.

OK! I'm home after a LONG day, but here's my newest draft on the definition of genderfluid:

Genderfluid: Identifying as more than one gender, but in a way such that one "flows" between genders, or experiences a change in gender in some way. This may be between all genders or any subset of genders. It is often different from bigender in that a genderfluid individual may experience slow gradual changes as well as abrupt flips, whereas bigender people tend to only experience binary ("all or nothing") flips, and no "in-between" period.

What do you guys think?

I think your usage of "binary" flips might be a bit misleading.

I just go with:

Bigender: having two gender identities either at the same time, or experiencing both in tandem

versus

Genderfluid: having a fluctuating or shifting gender identity

me: agreed, it certainly at any rate a gender that fluxuates.

the way is see it is as a gender that's composed of two or more genders that alternate between each other (not neccesarily in a pattern)

I think your usage of "binary" flips might be a bit misleading.

I just go with:

Bigender: having two gender identities either at the same time, or experiencing both in tandem

versus

Genderfluid: having a fluctuating or shifting gender identity

excellent point

That is a much nicer definition, :) is the definition you adjusted the one for the aven definition masters list?

Yes it is. I have a working draft (that has been in the works for... eek... eight months or so now). It's almost done, it should be ready for you guys to review it in a few days!

I will be putting the draft out in full, and have a thread for further comments and feedback before I use it to replace the old master definitions thread. I just have three or four more things to tweak... ;)

It's getting exciting for me, it's all finally coming together after so long!
