Gender inclusivity fails

Could have put inter for at least those who are cis-intersexed or bigendered.

Reminds me of one college app that I came across. The gender options were either 'male', 'female', or 'unknown.'

How about on RoomSurf.com where you can only pic male or female, but for sexuality the options are

Straight, gay, bi, or bi curious.

For real? Bi curious? That made the list but pan or ace or demi or lith or skolio didnt? Really?!?!

I would have been sorely tempted to write "You may not know, but it's not unknown to me!" ;)

The "not telling" one is equally annoying, since it still implies that there's a gender I'm not telling them:

(Eurobricks assumes binary gender or that you're simply withholding your binary gender)

I prefer not to tell random websites that I'm genderless. :P

  • 2 weeks later...

The ACT and SAT test also failed recognize any nonbinary genders right after claiming their diversity. I still took them though.

That's quite a fail. One may as well state:

We welcome the complete rainbow, we accept all wavelengths from 390 to 700 nm (but not outside of that range)!

Applying to local colleges was a pain too because such apps ran through a system that mandated the id with a binary gender.

That reminds me of "so, are you female agender or male agender?" Unless the school has really inclusive policies on trans once you get there, you end up right back in the box. (If they accept you, they do need to figure out what they're going to do about roommates, unless you can get a single.)

Hmm... If GSRM are a rainbow, then aces are just outside the visible spectrum of most people. I like this metaphor. :D

Haha. I like it! It's like asexuals are infrared, we're the true invisible orientation! Except, thanks to numerous visibility efforts, the sexuals are developing infra-red cameras, and are starting to see us...

Well whoever was making the list box was having some clear fun with it. And they STILL didn't include a option for - I feel a mix of the two and identify that way I.e. Multigender.

At least they weren't only binary. Small steps, right? :P

The problem about this quote is that there were weven ancient socities that have widely recognized non binary genders.

Many steps have been taken both backwards and forwards across the ages. I hope that a more universal trend can be found, in which genders and lacks thereof can be accepted wholesale and loved unconditionally, regardless of a person's identity. However, I am not fooled into thinking that there will never be steps, or even leaps or sprints, backwards along the way; there have been many of those in the past, as you have pointed out, and I'm sure there will be some in the future too. I just hope that the forward ones outpace them :)

Nice, since I contacted Nextdoor they have added another gender option and it uses they/them/their pronouns! It seems that this new Other gender option just treats the person as an organization, which also uses the same plural pronouns.

I've been waiting days for someone to thank me so I could see what it referred to me as.

I'm not going to say how many pages of Tumblr and Google Images I had to scroll through to find this again (hint: way too many--I had to do some serious notes-diving for this), but here it is.

Wow! WELL DONE! You have now officially made a difference in the world, and thanks to you, it is a slightly more comfortable place for those off the gender binary
